Matthew 4-6

The Temptation of Jesus

[4] But He answered and said, "It is written, 'MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.'" [Mat 4:4 LSB]

[7] Jesus said to him, "Again, it is written, 'YOU SHALL NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST.'" [Mat 4:7 LSB]

[10] Then Jesus said to him, "Go, Satan! For it is written, 'YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD, AND SERVE HIM ONLY.'" [Mat 4:10 LSB]

Jesus Begins His Ministry

[13] and leaving Nazareth, He came and lived in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali, [14] in order that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet would be fulfilled, saying, [15] "THE LAND OF ZEBULUN AND THE LAND OF NAPHTALI, BY THE WAY OF THE SEA, BEYOND THE JORDAN, GALILEE OF THE GENTILES-- [16] THE PEOPLE WHO WERE SITTING IN DARKNESS SAW A GREAT LIGHT, AND THOSE WHO WERE SITTING IN THE LAND AND SHADOW OF DEATH, UPON THEM A LIGHT DAWNED." [Mat 4:13-16 LSB]

[1] But there will be no [more] gloom for her who was in anguish; in earlier times He treated the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He shall make [it] glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles. [2] The people who walk in darkness Will see a great light; Those who live in the land of the shadow of death, The light will shine on them. [Isa 9:1-2 LSB]

[17] From that time Jesus began to preach and say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." [Mat 4:17 LSB]

The First Disciples

[19] And He said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men." [20] And immediately they left their nets and followed Him. [Mat 4:19-20 LSB]

Ministry in Galilee

[23] And Jesus was going throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people. [Mat 4:23 LSB]

The Sermon on the Mount; The Beatitudes

[3] "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [4] Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. [5] Blessed are the lowly, for they shall inherit the earth. [6] Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. [7] Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. [8] Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. [9] Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. [10] Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [11] "Blessed are you when [people] insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. [Mat 5:3-11 LSB]

Salt and Light

[19] "Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others [to do] the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches [them], he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. [Mat 5:19 LSB]

[20] "For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses [that] of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. [Mat 5:20 LSB]

Personal Relationships

[27] "You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY'; [28] but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. [29] "But if your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. [30] "And if your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into hell. [Mat 5:27-30 LSB]

[48] "Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect. [Mat 5:48 LSB]

Giving to the Poor and Prayer

[3] "But when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, [4] so that your giving will be in secret; and your Father who sees [what is done] in secret will reward you. [Mat 6:3-4 LSB]

[7] "And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words. [8] "Therefore, do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him. [Mat 6:7-8 LSB]

Fasting

[17] "But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face [18] so that your fasting will not be noticed by men, but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees [what is done] in secret will reward you. [Mat 6:17-18 LSB]

Treasures in Heaven

[20] "But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; [21] for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. [Mat 6:20-21 LSB]

[24] "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth. [Mat 6:24 LSB]

Do Not Worry

[33] "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. [34] "So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. [Mat 6:33-34 LSB]
