Jesus Appoints the Twelve

[1] And summoning His twelve disciples, [Jesus] gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every kind of disease and every kind of sickness. [Mat 10:1 LSB]

The Twelve Disciples Sent Out

[5] These twelve Jesus sent out after instructing them, saying, "Do not go in the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter [any] city of the Samaritans; [6] but rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. [Mat 10:5-6 LSB]

[7] "And as you go, preach, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.' [8] "Heal [the] sick, raise [the] dead, cleanse [the] lepers, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give. [Mat 10:7-8 LSB]

[1] Now in those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying, [2] "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." [Mat 3:1-2 LSB]

[14] "And whoever does not receive you, nor heed your words, as you leave that house or that city, shake the dust off your feet. [Mat 10:14 LSB]

[50] But the Jews incited the God-fearing women of prominence and the leading men of the city, and instigated a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their district. [51] But having shaken off the dust of their feet against them, they went to Iconium. [Act 13:50-51 LSB]

The Promise of Persecution

[19] "But when they deliver you over, do not worry about how or what you are to say; for it will be given to you in that hour what you are to say. [20] "For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you. [Mat 10:19-20 LSB]

[2] "The Spirit of Yahweh spoke by me, And His word was on my tongue. [2Sa 23:2 LSB] 

[14] "So set in your hearts not to prepare beforehand to defend yourselves; [15] for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which none of your opponents will be able to resist or refute. [Luk 21:14-15 LSB]

[23] "But whenever they persecute you in this city, flee to the next; for truly I say to you, you will not finish [going through] the cities of Israel until the Son of Man comes. [Mat 10:23 LSB] 

The Meaning of Discipleship

[27] "What I tell you in the darkness, speak in the light; and what you hear [whispered] in [your] ear, proclaim upon the housetops. [Mat 10:27 LSB]

[32] "Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven. [33] "But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven. [Mat 10:32-33 LSB]

[37] "He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. [38] "And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. [39] "He who has found his life will lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake will find it. [Mat 10:37-39 LSB]

The Reward of Service

[40] "He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me. [Mat 10:40 LSB]

Questions from John the Baptist

[4] And Jesus answered and said to them, "Go and report to John what you hear and see: [5] [the] BLIND RECEIVE SIGHT and [the] lame walk, [the] lepers are cleansed and [the] deaf hear, [the] dead are raised up, and [the] POOR HAVE THE GOSPEL PREACHED TO THEM. [Mat 11:4-5 LSB]

[5] Then the eyes of the blind will be opened, And the ears of the deaf will be unstopped. [6] Then the lame will leap like a deer, And the tongue of the mute will shout for joy. For waters will break forth in the wilderness And streams in the Arabah. [Isa 35:5-6 LSB]

[1] The Spirit of Lord Yahweh is upon me Because Yahweh has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim release to captives And freedom to prisoners, [Isa 61:1 LSB]  

  

Jesus’ Tribute to John the Baptist

[11] "Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen [anyone] greater than John the Baptist! Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. [Mat 11:11 LSB]

Woe to Unrepentant Cities

Come to Me

[27] "All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal [Him]. [Mat 11:27 LSB]

[28] "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. [29] "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. [30] "For My yoke is easy and My burden is light." [Mat 11:28-30 LSB]

Lord of the Sabbath

[7] "But if you had known what this means, 'I DESIRE COMPASSION, AND NOT A SACRIFICE,' you would not have condemned the innocent. [Mat 12:7 LSB] 

[6] For I delight in lovingkindness rather than sacrifice, And in the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings. [Hos 6:6 LSB]

[8] "For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath." [Mat 12:8 LSB] 

Jesus Heals a Man on the Sabbath

[18] "BEHOLD, MY SERVANT WHOM I HAVE CHOSEN; MY BELOVED IN WHOM MY SOUL IS WELL-PLEASED; I WILL PUT MY SPIRIT UPON HIM, AND HE SHALL PROCLAIM JUSTICE TO THE GENTILES. [19] "HE WILL NOT QUARREL, NOR CRY OUT; NOR WILL ANYONE HEAR HIS VOICE IN THE STREETS. [20] "A BATTERED REED HE WILL NOT BREAK OFF, AND A SMOLDERING WICK HE WILL NOT PUT OUT, UNTIL HE LEADS JUSTICE TO VICTORY. [21] "AND IN HIS NAME THE GENTILES WILL HOPE." [Mat 12:18-21 LSB]

[1] "Behold, My Servant, whom I uphold; My chosen one [in whom] My soul is well-pleased. I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the nations. [2] "He will not cry out or raise [His voice], Nor make His voice heard in the street. [3] "A crushed reed He will not break And a faintly burning wick He will not extinguish; He will bring forth justice in truth. [4] "He will not be faint or crushed Until He has established justice in the earth; And the coastlands will wait expectantly for His law." [Isa 42:1-4 LSB]

A Kingdom Divided

Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit

[32] "And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the [age] to come. [Mat 12:32 LSB]

[51] "You men--stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears--are always resisting the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you. [Act 7:51 LSB]

 

The Heart Is Revealed by Words

[37] "For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned." [Mat 12:37 LSB]

The Sign of Jonah

[40] for just as JONAH WAS THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE BELLY OF THE SEA MONSTER, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. [Mat 12:40 LSB]
