Simeon and Levi Deceive Shechem
[1] Now Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land. [Gen 34:1 LSB]
[46] Then Rebekah said to Isaac, "I am tired of living because of the daughters of Heth; if Jacob takes a wife from the daughters of Heth, like these, from the daughters of the land, what good will my life be to me?" [Gen 27:46 LSB]
[25] Now it happened on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each took his sword and came upon the unsuspecting city and killed every male. [Gen 34:25 LSB]
[5] "Simeon and Levi are brothers; Their swords are implements of violence. [6] "Let my soul not enter into their council; Let not my glory be united with their assembly; Because in their anger they killed men, And in their self-will they hamstrung oxen. [7] "Cursed be their anger, for it is strong; And their wrath, for it is cruel. I will divide them amongst Jacob, And scatter them in Israel. [Gen 49:5-7 LSB]
Jacob Goes Up to Bethel
[1] Then God said to Jacob, "Arise, go up to Bethel and live there, and make an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau." [2] So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, "Put away the foreign gods which are among you and cleanse yourselves and change your garments; [3] and let us arise and go up to Bethel, and I will make an altar there to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and has been with me wherever I have gone." [Gen 35:1-3 LSB]
[18] So Jacob rose early in the morning and took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on its top. [19] And he called the name of that place Bethel; however, previously the name of the city had been Luz. [Gen 28:18-19 LSB]
[5] Then they journeyed on, and there was a terror from God upon the cities which were around them, and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob. [Gen 35:5 LSB]
[7] And he built an altar there and called the place El-bethel, because there God had revealed Himself to him when he fled from his brother. [Gen 35:7 LSB]
Jacob Is Renamed Israel
[10] And God said to him, "Your name is Jacob; Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, But Israel shall be your name." Thus He called his name Israel. [Gen 35:10 LSB]
[11] God also said to him, "I am God Almighty; Be fruitful and multiply; A nation and an assembly of nations shall come from you, And kings shall come forth from your loins. [12] "And the land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give it to you, And I will give the land to your seed after you." [Gen 35:11-12 LSB]
The Sons of Jacob
[22] Now it happened while Israel was dwelling in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine, and Israel heard [of it]. And there were twelve sons of Jacob-- [Gen 35:22 LSB]
[3] "Reuben, you are my firstborn; My might and the beginning of my vigor, Preeminent in dignity and preeminent in strength. [4] "Uncontrolled as water, you shall not have preeminence, Because you went up to your father's bed; Then you defiled [it]--he went up to my couch. [Gen 49:3-4 LSB]
