Matthew 1-3

The Genealogy of Jesus Christ

[1] The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham: [Mat 1:1 LSB]

[16] And Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ. [Mat 1:16 LSB]

Conception and Birth of Jesus

[20] But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the One who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. [21] "And she will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins." [Mat 1:20-21 LSB]

[2] Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that her warfare is ended, that her iniquity is pardoned, that she has received from the LORD's hand double for all her sins. [Isa 40:2 ESV]

[22] Now all this took place in order that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled, saying, [23] "BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL," which translated means, "GOD WITH US." [Mat 1:21-23 LSB]

[14] "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel. [Isa 7:14 LSB]

 

The Visit of the Magi

[5] And they said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for this is what has been written by the prophet: [6] 'AND YOU, BETHLEHEM, LAND OF JUDAH, ARE BY NO MEANS LEAST AMONG THE LEADERS OF JUDAH; FOR OUT OF YOU SHALL COME FORTH A LEADER WHO WILL SHEPHERD MY PEOPLE ISRAEL.'" [Mat 2:5-6 LSB]

[2] "But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, [Too] little to be among the clans of Judah, From you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from everlasting, From the ancient days." [Mic 5:2 LSB]

 

The Flight to Egypt

[15] And he remained there until the death of Herod, in order that what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled, saying, "OUT OF EGYPT I CALLED MY SON." [Mat 2:15 LSB]

[1] When Israel [was] a youth I loved him, And out of Egypt I called My son. [Hos 11:1 LSB]

Herod Slaughters Children

[16] Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by the magi, he became very enraged, and sent and slew all the male children who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had carefully determined from the magi. [Mat 2:16 LSB]

[15] Thus says Yahweh, "A voice is heard in Ramah, Wailing [and] bitter weeping. Rachel is weeping for her children; She refuses to be comforted for her children Because they are no more." [Jer 31:15 LSB]

[23] and came and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken through the prophets would be fulfilled: "He shall be called a Nazarene." [Mat 2:23 LSB]

The Preaching of John the Baptist

[1] Now in those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying, [2] "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." [3] For this is the one referred to by Isaiah the prophet, saying, "THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, 'MAKE READY THE WAY OF THE LORD, MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT!'" [Mat 3:1-3 LSB]

[3] A voice is calling, "Prepare the way for Yahweh in the wilderness; Make smooth in the desert a highway for our God. [Isa 40:3 LSB]

[11] "As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. [Mat 3:11 LSB]

The Baptism of Jesus

 [16] And after being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove [and] coming upon Him, [17] and behold, [there was] a voice out of the heavens saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased." [Mat 3:16-17 LSB]

[1] "Behold, My Servant, whom I uphold; My chosen one [in whom] My soul is well-pleased. I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the nations. [Isa 42:1 LSB]

[7] "I will surely tell of the decree of Yahweh: He said to Me, 'You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. [Psa 2:7 LSB]
