Genesis 31-33

Jacob Leaves While Laban Is Gone

[5] and he said to them, "I see your father's face, that it is not [friendly] toward me as formerly, but the God of my father has been with me. [Gen 31:5 LSB]

[13] 'I am the God [of] Bethel, where you anointed a pillar, where you made a vow to Me; now arise, leave this land, and return to the land of your kin.'" [Gen 31:13 LSB]

Laban Pursues Jacob

[29] "It is in my hand to do evil against you, but the God of your father spoke to me last night, saying, 'Beware of speaking either good or evil to Jacob.' [Gen 31:29 LSB]

[32] "The one with whom you find your gods shall not live; in the presence of our relatives recognize what is yours among my belongings and take [it] for yourself." But Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them. [Gen 31:32 LSB]

[42] If the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac, had not been on my side, surely now you would have sent me away empty-handed. God saw my affliction and the labor of my hands and rebuked you last night." [Gen 31:42 ESV]

The Covenant at Mizpah

[54] Then Jacob offered a sacrifice on the mountain and called his relatives to eat a meal; and they ate the meal and spent the night on the mountain. [Gen 31:54 LSB]

Jacob’s Fear of Esau

[1] Now Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him. [2] Then Jacob said when he saw them, "This is God's camp." So he named that place Mahanaim. [Gen 32:1-2 LSB]

[9] And Jacob said, "O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, O Yahweh, who said to me, 'Return to your land and to your kin, and I will prosper you,' [10] I am unworthy of all the lovingkindness and of all the truth which You have shown to Your slave; for with my staff [only] I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two camps. [11] "Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and strike me down [with] the mothers and the children. [12] "For You said, 'I will surely prosper you and make your seed as the sand of the sea, which is too great to be numbered.'" [Gen 32:9-12 LSB]

Jacob Wrestles with God

[24] Then Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until the breaking of dawn. [Gen 32:24 LSB]

[26] Then he said, "Let me go, for the dawn is breaking." But he said, "I will not let you go unless you bless me." [27] So he said to him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Jacob." [28] Then He said, "Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel; for you have striven with God and with men and have prevailed." [Gen 32:26-28 LSB]

[3] In the womb he took his brother by the heel, And in his maturity he wrestled with God. [4] Indeed, he wrestled with the angel and prevailed; He wept and sought His favor. He found Him at Bethel, And there He spoke with us, [Hos 12:3-4 LSB]

[30] So Jacob named the place Peniel, for [he said], "I have seen God face to face, yet my life has been delivered." [Gen 32:30 LSB]

[20] But He said, "You cannot see My face, for no man can see Me and live!" [Exo 33:20 LSB]

Jacob Meets Esau

[4] Then Esau ran to meet him and embraced him and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept. [Gen 33:4 LSB]

[10] And Jacob said, "No, please, if now I have found favor in your sight, then take my present from my hand, for I see your face as one sees the face of God, and you have received me favorably. [Gen 33:10 LSB]

Jacob Camps in Shechem

[20] Then he set up there an altar and called it El-Elohe-Israel. [Gen 33:20 LSB]
