Hosea’s Wife and Children

Hos 1:6 LSB – [6] Then she conceived again and gave birth to a daughter. And Yahweh said to him, "Name her Lo-ruhamah, for I will no longer have compassion on the house of Israel, that I would ever forgive them.

Yahweh’s Faithful Betrothal

Hosea Redeems His Wife

Hos 3:1 LSB – [1] Then Yahweh said to me, "Go again, love a woman [who] is loved by [her] companion and is an adulteress, even as Yahweh loves the sons of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love raisin cakes."

Hos 3:5 ESV – [5] Afterward the children of Israel shall return and seek the LORD their God, and David their king, and they shall come in fear to the LORD and to his goodness in the latter days.

Yahweh’s Contention with Israel

Hos 4:6 LSB – [6] My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. 

Because you have rejected knowledge, 

I also will reject you from ministering as My priest. 

Since you have forgotten the law of your God, 

I Myself also will forget your children.

Hos 6:6 LSB – [6] For I delight in lovingkindness rather than sacrifice,

And in the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

2Co 4:3-6 LSB – [3] And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing,

Yahweh Withdraws from Israel

Amos 6-9 - A Famine for Hearing the Words of Yahweh

Woe to Those at Ease in Zion

Amo 6:8 LSB – [8] Lord Yahweh has sworn by Himself, Yahweh God of hosts has declared: "I abhor the lofty pride of Jacob And hate his citadels; Therefore I will deliver up [the] city as well as its fullness."

Amo 6:14 LSB – [14] "For behold, I am going to raise up a nation against you, O house of Israel," declares Yahweh God of hosts, "And they will press down on you from Lebo-hamath To the brook of the Arabah."

Yahweh Will Rise Up Against Israel

Amo 7:9 LSB – [9] "The high places of Isaac will be desolated And the sanctuaries of Israel laid waste. Then I will rise up against the house of Jeroboam with the sword."

Amos Accused

Amo 7:14-15 LSB – [14] Then Amos answered and said to Amaziah, "I am not a prophet, nor am I the son of a prophet; for I am a herdsman and a grower of sycamore figs. [15] "But Yahweh took me from following the flock, and Yahweh said to me, 'Go prophesy to My people Israel.'

A Famine for Hearing the Words of Yahweh

Amo 8:11-12 LSB – 

[11] "Behold, days are coming," declares Lord Yahweh, 

"When I will send a famine on the land, Not a famine for bread or a thirst for water, 

But rather for hearing the words of Yahweh. 

[12] "People will wander from sea to sea And from the north even to the east; 

They will go to and fro to seek the word of Yahweh, 

But they will not find [it].

Sinful Israelites Will Die by the Sword

Amo 9:2 LSB – 

[2] "Though they dig into Sheol, 

From there will My hand take them; 

And though they ascend to heaven, 

From there will I bring them down.

[7] Where can I go from Your Spirit?

Yahweh Will Rebuild Israel

And all the nations who are called by My name,"

Amos 1-5 - Seek Yahweh that you may live

Judgment on Israel’s Neighbors

Amo 1:1-2 LSB – 

[1] The words of Amos, who was among the sheepherders from Tekoa, which he beheld [in visions] concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam son of Joash, king of Israel, two years before the earthquake. 

[2] And he said, "Yahweh roars from Zion And from Jerusalem He gives forth His voice; And the shepherds' pasture grounds mourn, And the top of Carmel dries up."

Punishment of Judah and Israel

Amo 2:6 LSB – 

[6] Thus says Yahweh, "For three transgressions of Israel and for four I will not turn back its [punishment] 

Because they sell the righteous for money 

And the needy for a pair of sandals.

Amo 2:13 LSB – [13] "Behold, I am weighted down beneath you

Israel’s Guilt and Punishment

Seek Me That You May Live

Isaiah 64-66 - We are the clay, and You our potter;

Prayer for Mercy and Help

And our iniquities, like the wind, carry us away.

New Heavens and a New Earth

Heaven Is Yahweh’s Throne

Where then is a house you could build for Me? 

And where is a place that I may rest? 

[2] "For My hand made all these things, 

Thus all these things came into being," declares Yahweh. 

"But to this one I will look, 

To him who is humble and contrite of spirit, and who trembles at My word.

Joy in Jerusalem’s Future

Isa 66:22-24 LSB – 

[22] "For just as the new heavens and the new earth 

Which I make will endure before Me," declares Yahweh, 

"So your seed and your name will endure. 

[23] "And it shall be from new moon to new moon 

And from sabbath to sabbath,

Exaltation of the Afflicted

Vengeance of Yahweh

Remember the Lovingkindness of Yahweh

And the abundant goodness toward the house of Israel,

Israel’s Futile Idolatry

That I may know how to sustain the weary one with a word. 

He awakens [Me] morning by morning; 

He awakens My ear to listen as a disciple.

And I did not rebel Nor did I turn back.

Isa 50:7 LSB - [7] Even [now] Lord Yahweh helps Me, 

Therefore, I am not dishonored; 

Therefore, I have set My face like flint, 

And I know that I will not be ashamed.

Isa 50:9 LSB - [9] Behold, Lord Yahweh helps Me; 

Who is he who condemns Me? 

Behold, they will all wear out like a garment; 

The moth will eat them.

Yahweh’s Righteousness Is Forever

V. Here is an assurance given of the full accomplishment of this prediction, even to the most minute circumstance of it (v. 16, 17): "Seek you out of the book of the Lord and read. When this destruction comes compare the event with the prediction, and you will find it to answer exactly." Note, The book of the prophets is the book of the Lord, and we ought to consult it and converse with it as of divine origin and authority. We must not only read it, but see out of it, search into it, turn first to one text and then to another and compare them together. Abundance of useful knowledge might thus be extracted, by a diligent search, out of the scriptures, which cannot be got by a superficial reading of them. When you have read the prediction out of the book of the Lord then observe,

1. That according to what you have read so you see; not one of these shall fail, either beast or fowl: and, it being foretold that they shall possess it from generation to generation, in order to that, that the species may be propagated, none shall want her mate; these marks of desolation shall be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the land.

2. That God's mouth having commanded this direful muster his Spirit shall gather them, as the creatures by instinct were gathered to Adam to be named and to Noah to be housed. What God's word has appointed his Spirit will effect and bring about, for no word of God shall fall to the ground. The word of God's promise shall in like manner be accomplished by the operations of the Spirit.

3. That there is an exact order and proportion observed in the accomplishment of this threatening: He has cast the lot for these birds and beasts, so that each one shall know his place as readily as if it were marked by line. See the like, Joel 2:7, 8, They shall not break their ranks, neither shall one thrust another. The soothsayers among the heathen foretold events by the flight of birds, as if the fate of men depended on them. But here we find that the flight of birds is under the direction of the God of Israel: he has cast the lot for them.

4. That the desolation shall be perpetual: They shall possess it for ever. God's Jerusalem may be laid in ruins; but Jerusalem of old recovered itself out of its ruins, till it gave place to the gospel Jerusalem, which may be brought low, but shall be rebuilt, and shall continue till it give place to the heavenly Jerusalem. But the enemies of the church shall be for ever desolate, shall be punished with an everlasting destruction.
