Matthew 4-6 - Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness

The Temptation of Jesus

Mat 4:1-2 LSB - [1] Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. [2] And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry.

Mat 4:4 LSB - [4] But He answered and said, "It is written, 'MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.'"

Mat 4:7 LSB - [7] Jesus said to him, "Again, it is written, 'YOU SHALL NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST.'"

Mat 4:10 LSB - [10] Then Jesus said to him, "Go, Satan! For it is written, 'YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD, AND SERVE HIM ONLY.'"

Jesus Begins His Ministry

Mat 4:12-16 LSB - [12] Now when [Jesus] heard that John had been taken into custody, He departed into Galilee; [13] and leaving Nazareth, He came and lived in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali, [14] in order that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet would be fulfilled, saying, [15] "THE LAND OF ZEBULUN AND THE LAND OF NAPHTALI, BY THE WAY OF THE SEA, BEYOND THE JORDAN, GALILEE OF THE GENTILES-- [16] THE PEOPLE WHO WERE SITTING IN DARKNESS SAW A GREAT LIGHT, AND THOSE WHO WERE SITTING IN THE LAND AND SHADOW OF DEATH, UPON THEM A LIGHT DAWNED."

Mat 4:17 LSB - [17] From that time Jesus began to preach and say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

The First Disciples

Mat 4:18-20 LSB - [18] Now as [Jesus] was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. [19] And He said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men." [20] And immediately they left their nets and followed Him.

Mat 4:21-22 LSB - [21] And going on from there He saw two other brothers, James the [son] of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and He called them. [22] And immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.

Ministry in Galilee

Mat 4:23 LSB - [23] And Jesus was going throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people.

The Sermon on the Mount; The Beatitudes

Mat 5:11-12 LSB - [11] "Blessed are you when [people] insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. [12] "Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Salt and Light

Mat 5:19 LSB - [19] "Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others [to do] the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches [them], he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Mat 5:20 LSB - [20] "For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses [that] of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Personal Relationships

Mat 5:39 LSB - [39] "But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.

Mat 5:48 LSB - [48] "Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Giving to the Poor and Prayer

Mat 6:3-4 LSB - [3] "But when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, [4] so that your giving will be in secret; and your Father who sees [what is done] in secret will reward you.

Mat 6:6 LSB - [6] "But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees [what is done] in secret will reward you.

Mat 6:9-13 LSB - 

[9] "Pray, then, in this way: 'Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. 

[10] 'Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. 

[11] 'Give us this day our daily bread. 

[12] 'And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 

[13] 'And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. [For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.']

Fasting

Treasures in Heaven

Mat 6:20-21 LSB - [20] "But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; [21] for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Do Not Worry

Mat 6:31-32 LSB - [31] "Do not worry then, saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear for clothing?' [32] "For all these things the Gentiles eagerly seek; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.

Mat 6:33 LSB - [33] "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
