Genesis 47-50

Jacob’s Family Settles in Goshen

Gen 47:9-10 LSB - [9] So Jacob said to Pharaoh, "The days of the years of my sojourning are 130; few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not attained to the days of the years that my fathers lived during the days of their sojourning." [10] And Jacob blessed Pharaoh and went out from the presence of Pharaoh.

Joseph and the Famine

Gen 47:29-31 LSB - [29] Then the days for Israel to die drew near, and he called his son Joseph and said to him, "Please, if I have found favor in your sight, place now your hand under my thigh and deal with me in lovingkindness and truth. Please do not bury me in Egypt. [30] "But I will lie down with my fathers, and you will carry me out of Egypt and bury me in their burial place." And he said, "I will do as you have said." [31] Then he said, "Swear to me." So he swore to him. Then Israel bowed [in worship] at the head of the bed.

Heb 11:21 LSB - [21] By faith Jacob, as he was dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and WORSHIPED, [leaning] ON THE TOP OF HIS STAFF.

Israel Blesses Manasseh and Ephraim

Gen 48:15-16 LSB - [15] And he blessed Joseph and said, "May the God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, The God who has been my shepherd throughout my life to this day, [16] The angel who has redeemed me from all evil, Bless [these] boys; And may my name live on in them, And the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; And may they grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth."

Jacob Assembles His Sons

Gen 49:7 LSB - [7] "Cursed be their anger, for it is strong; And their wrath, for it is cruel. I will divide them amongst Jacob, And scatter them in Israel.

Jos 21:3 LSB - [3] So the sons of Israel gave the Levites from their inheritance these cities with their pasture lands, according to the command of Yahweh.

Jacob Breathes His Last

Gen 49:33 LSB - [33] So Jacob finished commanding his sons. And he drew his feet into the bed and breathed his last and was gathered to his people.

Jacob’s Burial at Machpelah

Gen 50:12-13 LSB - [12] Thus his sons did for him as he had commanded them. [13] Indeed, his sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre, which Abraham had bought along with the field for [his] possession [as] a burial site from Ephron the Hittite.

Gen 50:19-20 LSB - [19] But Joseph said to them, "Do not be afraid, for am I in God's place? [20] "As for you, you meant evil against me, [but] God meant it for good in order to do [what has happened on] this day, to keep many people alive.

The Death of Joseph

Gen 50:25 LSB - [25] Then Joseph made the sons of Israel swear, saying, "God will surely take care of you, and you shall carry my bones up from here."

Heb 11:22 LSB - [22] By faith Joseph, when he was dying, made mention of the exodus of the sons of Israel, and gave commands concerning his bones.

Plenty in a time of dearth by John Newton
8,8,8,8

My soul once had its plenteous years,
And throve, with peace and comfort filled,
Like the fat kine and ripened ears,
Which Pharaoh in his dream beheld.

With pleasing frames and grace received,
With means and ordinances fed;
How happy for a while I lived,
And little feared the want of bread.

But famine came and left no sign,
Of all the plenty I had seen;
Like the dry ears and half–starved kine,
I then looked withered, faint and lean.

To Joseph the Egyptians went,
To Jesus I made known my case;
He, when my little stock was spent,
Opened his magazine of grace.

For he the time of dearth foresaw,
And made provision long before;
That famished souls, like me, might draw
Supplies from his unbounded store.

Now on his bounty I depend,
And live from fear of dearth secure,
Maintained by such a mighty friend,
I cannot want till he is poor.

O sinners hear his gracious call!
His mercy’s door stands open wide,
He has enough to feed you all,
And none who come shall be denied.
