Matthew 1-3 - Immanuel

The Genealogy of Jesus Christ

Mat 1:1 LSB - [1] The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham:

Mat 1:16-17 LSB - [16] And Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ. [17] Therefore all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ, fourteen generations.

The Conception and Birth of Jesus

Mat 1:18 LSB - [18] Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.

Mat 1:20-21 LSB - [20] But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the One who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. [21] "And she will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins."

Mat 1:22-23 LSB - [22] Now all this took place in order that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled, saying, [23] "BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL," which translated means, "GOD WITH US."

The Visit of the Magi

Mat 2:5-6 LSB - [5] And they said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for this is what has been written by the prophet: [6] 'AND YOU, BETHLEHEM, LAND OF JUDAH, ARE BY NO MEANS LEAST AMONG THE LEADERS OF JUDAH; FOR OUT OF YOU SHALL COME FORTH A LEADER WHO WILL SHEPHERD MY PEOPLE ISRAEL.'"

Mat 2:11 LSB - [11] And after coming into the house they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell to the ground and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

The Flight to Egypt

Mat 2:13-15 LSB - [13] Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, "Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to destroy Him." [14] So Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother while it was still night, and departed for Egypt. [15] And he remained there until the death of Herod, in order that what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled, saying, "OUT OF EGYPT I CALLED MY SON."

Hos 11:1 LSB - [1] When Israel [was] a youth I loved him, And out of Egypt I called My son.

Herod Slaughters Children

Mat 2:22-23 LSB - [22] But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Then after being warned [by God] in a dream, he departed for the district of Galilee, [23] and came and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken through the prophets would be fulfilled: "He shall be called a Nazarene."

iii. If there was any specific passage in Matthew’s mind, it was likely Isaiah 11:1: There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots. The Hebrew word translated Branch sounds like “Nazir” (neser). “Jerome, following the Jewish scholars of his time, believed the reference to be mainly to Isaiah 11, where mention is made of a branch that shall spring out of Jesse’s root…The epithet Nazarene will thus mean: ‘the man of Nazareth, the town of the little shoot’.” (Bruce)

iv. “He meant that the prophets have described the Messiah as one that would be despised and rejected of men. They spoke of him as a great prince and conqueror when they described his second coming, but they set forth his first coming when they spoke of him as a root out of a dry ground without form or comeliness, who when he should be seen would have no beauty that men should desire him. The prophets said that he would be called by a despicable title, and it was so, for his countrymen called him a Nazarene.” (Spurgeon)

The Preaching of John the Baptist

Mat 3:1-2 LSB - [1] Now in those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying, [2] "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

ii. The call to repentance is important and must not be neglected. It is entirely accurate to say that it is the first word of the gospel.
  • Repent was the first word of John the Baptist’s gospel (Matthew 3:1-2).
  • Repent was the first word of Jesus’ gospel (Matthew 4:17 and Mark 1:14-15).
  • Repent was the first word in the preaching ministry of the twelve disciples (Mark 6:12).
  • Repent was the first word in the preaching instructions Jesus gave to His disciples after His resurrection (Luke 24:46-47).
  • Repent was the first word of exhortation in the first Christian sermon (Acts 2:38).
  • Repent was the first word in the mouth of the Apostle Paul through his ministry (Acts 26:19-20).

Mat 3:11 LSB - [11] "As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

The Baptism of Jesus

Mat 3:16-17 LSB - [16] And after being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove [and] coming upon Him, [17] and behold, [there was] a voice out of the heavens saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased."
