Genesis 34-36 - Jacob Is Renamed Israel

Simeon and Levi Deceive Shechem

Gen 34:1 LSB - [1] Now Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.

Gen 27:46 LSB - [46] Then Rebekah said to Isaac, "I am tired of living because of the daughters of Heth; if Jacob takes a wife from the daughters of Heth, like these, from the daughters of the land, what good will my life be to me?"

Gen 34:2-3 LSB - [2] Then Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her and took her and lay with her and violated her. [3] And he was deeply attracted to Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the young woman and spoke to the heart of the young woman.

Gen 34:13 LSB - [13] But Jacob's sons answered Shechem and his father Hamor with deceit, and [thus] they spoke, because he had defiled Dinah their sister.

Gen 34:15 LSB - [15] "Only on this [condition] will we consent to you: if you will become like us, in that every male among you be circumcised,

Gen 34:25 LSB - [25] Now it happened on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each took his sword and came upon the unsuspecting city and killed every male.

Gen 49:5-7 LSB - [5] "Simeon and Levi are brothers; Their swords are implements of violence. [6] "Let my soul not enter into their council; Let not my glory be united with their assembly; Because in their anger they killed men, And in their self-will they hamstrung oxen. [7] "Cursed be their anger, for it is strong; And their wrath, for it is cruel. I will divide them amongst Jacob, And scatter them in Israel.

Jacob Goes Up to Bethel

Gen 35:1 LSB - [1] Then God said to Jacob, "Arise, go up to Bethel and live there, and make an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau."

Gen 35:2-3 LSB - [2] So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, "Put away the foreign gods which are among you and cleanse yourselves and change your garments; [3] and let us arise and go up to Bethel, and I will make an altar there to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and has been with me wherever I have gone."

Gen 35:7 LSB - [7] And he built an altar there and called the place El-bethel, because there God had revealed Himself to him when he fled from his brother.

Jacob Is Renamed Israel

Gen 35:7, 10 LSB - [7] And he built an altar there and called the place El-bethel, because there God had revealed Himself to him when he fled from his brother. ... [10] And God said to him, "Your name is Jacob; Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, But Israel shall be your name." Thus He called his name Israel.

The Sons of Jacob

Gen 35:27 LSB - [27] And Jacob came to his father Isaac at Mamre of Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had sojourned.

The Generations of Esau

Gen 36:1-3 LSB - [1] Now these are the generations of Esau (that is, Edom). [2] Esau took his wives from the daughters of Canaan: Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Oholibamah the daughter of Anah and the granddaughter of Zibeon the Hivite; [3] also Basemath, Ishmael's daughter, the sister of Nebaioth.

Gen 36:6-7 LSB - [6] Then Esau took his wives and his sons and his daughters and all his household, and his livestock and all his cattle and all his acquired goods, which he had accumulated in the land of Canaan, and he went to a land away from his brother Jacob. [7] For their possessions had become too great for them to live together, and the land where they sojourned could not sustain them because of their livestock.

Nearer, my God, to Thee

1
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
  Nearer to Thee;
E’en though it be a cross
  That raiseth me,
Still all my song shall be
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
  Nearer to Thee.
2
Though, like a wanderer,
  The sun gone down,
Darkness comes over me,
  My rest a stone;
Yet in my dreams I’d be
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
  Nearer to Thee.
3
There let me see the sight,
  An open heaven;
All that Thou sendest me,
  In mercy given;
Angels to beckon me
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
  Nearer to Thee.
4
Then, with my waking thoughts
  Bright with Thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs
  Bethel I’ll raise,
So by my woes to be
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
  Nearer to Thee.
