Exodus 16-18 Yahweh Rains Bread from Heaven

Yahweh Rains Bread from Heaven

Exo 16:4 LSB - [4] Then Yahweh said to Moses, "Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day, that I may test them, whether or not they will walk in My law.

Yahweh Gives Meat and Bread

Exo 16:12-13 LSB - [12] "I have heard the grumblings of the sons of Israel; speak to them, saying, 'At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread, so that you shall know that I am Yahweh your God.'" [13] So it happened at evening that the quails came up and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp.

Yahweh Gives Bread for Two Days

Exo 16:22 LSB - [22] Now it happened that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one. Then all the leaders of the congregation came and told Moses.

Exo 16:35 LSB - [35] And the sons of Israel ate the manna forty years, until they came to an inhabited land; they ate the manna until they came to the border of the land of Canaan.

Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah

1 Guide me, O my great Redeemer,
pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but you are mighty;
hold me with your powerful hand.
Bread of heaven, bread of heaven,
feed me now and evermore,
feed me now and evermore.

2 Open now the crystal fountain,
where the healing waters flow.
lead me all my journey through.
Strong Deliverer, strong Deliverer,
ever be my strength and shield,
ever be my strength and shield.

3 When I tread the verge of Jordan,
bid my anxious fears subside.
Death of death, and hell's Destruction,
land me safe on Canaan's side.
Songs of praises, songs of praises
I will ever sing to you,
I will ever sing to you.

Water from the Rock

Exo 17:6-7 LSB - [6] "Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink." And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. [7] So he named the place Massah and Meribah because of the contending of the sons of Israel, and because they tested Yahweh, saying, "Is Yahweh among us or not?"

Shepherd of souls, refresh and bless

1 Shepherd of souls, refresh and bless
Your chosen pilgrim flock
With manna in the wilderness,

2 We would not live by bread alone,
But by your word of grace,
In strength of which we travel on
To our abiding place.

3 Be known to us in breaking bread,
But do not then depart;
Savior, abide with us, and spread
Your table in our heart.

4 Lord, sup with us in love divine;
Your body and your blood,
That living bread, that heav'nly wine,
Be our immortal food.

Israel Overwhelms Amalek

Exo 17:14-16 LSB - [14] Then Yahweh said to Moses, "Write this in a book as a memorial and recite it in Joshua's hearing, that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven." [15] And Moses built an altar and named it Yahweh is My Banner; [16] and he said, "Because He [has sworn] with a hand upon the throne of Yah, Yahweh will have war against Amalek from generation to generation."

Jethro’s Counsel

Exo 18:2-4 LSB - [2] And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took Moses' wife Zipporah, after he had sent her away, [3] and her two sons, of whom one was named Gershom, for Moses said, "I have been a sojourner in a foreign land." [4] And the other was named Eliezer, for [he said], "The God of my father was my help and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh."

Exo 18:21-22 LSB - [21] "But you shall select excellent men out of all the people, those who fear God, men of truth, those who hate greedy gain; and you shall place [these men] over them [as] leaders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens. [22] "And they will judge the people at all times. And it will be that every major matter they will bring to you, but every minor matter they themselves will judge. So it will be easier for you, and they will bear [the burden] with you.

Exodus 13-15 - Israel Crosses the Red Sea

Sanctifying the Firstborn

Exo 13:2 LSB - [2] "Sanctify to Me every firstborn, the first offspring of every womb among the sons of Israel, both of man and beast; it belongs to Me."

The Feast of Unleavened Bread

Exo 13:8-9 LSB - [8] "And you shall tell your son on that day, saying, 'It is because of what Yahweh did for me when I came out of Egypt.' [9] "And it will be as a sign to you on your hand and as a memorial between your eyes, that the law of Yahweh may be in your mouth; for with a strong hand Yahweh brought you out of Egypt.

Exo 13:14-15 LSB - [14] "And it will be when your son asks you in time to come, saying, 'What is this?' then you shall say to him, 'With a strong hand Yahweh brought us out of Egypt, from the house of slavery. [15] 'And it happened, when Pharaoh hardened [his heart] with stiffness about letting us go, that Yahweh killed every firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man and the firstborn of beast. Therefore, I sacrifice to Yahweh the males, the first offspring of every womb, but every firstborn of my sons I redeem.'

Pillars of Cloud and Fire

Exo 13:17-18 LSB - [17] Now it happened that when Pharaoh had let the people go, God did not guide them by the way of the land of the Philistines, even though it was near; for God said, "Lest the people change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt." [18] Hence God turned the people to the way of the wilderness to the Red Sea; and the sons of Israel went up in battle array from the land of Egypt.

Exo 13:19 LSB - [19] And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for he had made the sons of Israel solemnly swear, saying, "God will surely take care of you, and you shall bring up my bones from here with you."

Exo 13:21 LSB - [21] And Yahweh was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day to guide them on the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light, that they might go by day and by night.

Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah
by William Williams

1 Guide me, O my great Redeemer,
pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but you are mighty;
hold me with your powerful hand.
Bread of heaven, bread of heaven,
feed me now and evermore,
feed me now and evermore.

2 Open now the crystal fountain,
where the healing waters flow.
Let the fire and cloudy pillar
lead me all my journey through.
Strong Deliverer, strong Deliverer,
ever be my strength and shield,
ever be my strength and shield.

3 When I tread the verge of Jordan,
bid my anxious fears subside.
Death of death, and hell's Destruction,
land me safe on Canaan's side.
Songs of praises, songs of praises
I will ever sing to you,
I will ever sing to you.

 Israel Crosses the Red Sea

Exo 14:3-4 LSB - [3] "And Pharaoh will say of the sons of Israel, 'They are wandering in confusion in the land; the wilderness has shut them in.' [4] "Thus I will harden Pharaoh's heart with strength, and he will pursue them; and I will be glorified through Pharaoh and all his army, so that the Egyptians will know that I am Yahweh." And they did so.

Exo 14:13-14 LSB - [13] But Moses said to the people, "Do not fear! Stand by and see the salvation of Yahweh which He will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will never see them again forever. [14] "Yahweh will fight for you, and you will keep silent."

Exo 14:21-22 LSB - [21] Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and Yahweh swept the sea [back] by a strong east wind all night and made the sea into dry ground, so the waters were split. [22] So the sons of Israel went through the midst of the sea on the dry land, and the waters [were] a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.

Exo 14:27-28 LSB - [27] So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to its normal state at daybreak while the Egyptians were fleeing right into it; then Yahweh overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea. [28] And the waters returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen, even Pharaoh's entire army that had gone into the sea after them; not even one of them remained.

Exo 14:29-31 LSB - [29] But the sons of Israel walked on dry land through the midst of the sea, and the waters [were] a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. [30] Thus Yahweh saved Israel that day from the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. [31] Then Israel saw the great hand which Yahweh had used against the Egyptians; and the people feared Yahweh, and they believed in Yahweh and in His servant Moses.

Come, ye faithful, raise the strain
Author: St. John of Damascus
1 Come, ye faithful, raise the strain
of triumphant gladness;
God hath brought forth Israel
into joy from sadness;
loosed from Pharaoh's bitter yoke
Jacob's sons and daughters,
led them with unmoistened foot
through the Red Sea waters.

2 'Tis the spring of souls today;
Christ hath burst His prison,
and from three days' sleep in death
as a sun hath risen;
all the winter of our sins,
long and dark, is flying
from His light, to whom we give
laud and praise undying.

3 Now the queen of seasons, bright
with the day of splendor,
with the royal feast of feasts,
comes its joy to render;
comes to glad Jerusalem,
who with true affection
welcomes in unwearied strains
Jesus' resurrection,

4 Neither might the gates of death,
nor the tomb's dark portal,
nor the watchers, nor the seal
hold Thee as a mortal;
but today amidst the twelve
Thou didst stand, bestowing
that Thy peace which evermore
passeth human knowing.

5 "Alleluia!" now we cry
to our King immortal,
who, triumphant, burst the bars
of the tomb's dark portal;
"Alleluia!" with the Son,
God the Father praising,
"Alleluia!" yet again
to the Spirit raising.

The Song of Moses and Israel

Exo 15:1-2 LSB -
[1] Then Moses and the sons of Israel sang this song to Yahweh and said,
"I will sing to Yahweh, for He is highly exalted;
The horse and its rider He has hurled into the sea.
[2] "Yah is my strength and song,
And He has become my salvation;
This is my God, and I will praise Him;
My father's God, and I will extol Him.

Exo 15:19 LSB - [19] For the horses of Pharaoh with his chariots and his horsemen went into the sea, and Yahweh brought back the waters of the sea on them, but the sons of Israel walked on dry land through the midst of the sea.

Yahweh Sweetens the Water

Exo 15:25-26 LSB - [25] Then he cried out to Yahweh, and Yahweh showed him a tree; and he threw [it] into the waters, and the waters became sweet. There He set for them a statute and a judgment, and there He tested them. [26] And He said, "If you will earnestly listen to the voice of Yahweh your God, and do what is right in His sight, and give ear to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have put on the Egyptians; for I, Yahweh, am your healer."

Exodus 10-12 - Israel Goes Out from Egypt

The Plague of Locusts

Exo 10:1-2 LSB -
[1] Then Yahweh said to Moses, "Come to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the heart of his servants with firmness, that I may set these signs of Mine among them,
[2] and that you may recount in the hearing of your son and of your grandson, how I dealt severely with the Egyptians, and how I put My signs among them, that you may know that I am Yahweh."

Exo 10:12-13 LSB -
[12] Then Yahweh said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, that they may come up on the land of Egypt and eat every plant of the land, all that the hail has left remaining."
[13] So Moses stretched out his staff over the land of Egypt, and Yahweh directed an east wind on the land all that day and all that night; [and when] it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts.

Exo 10:20 LSB - [20] But Yahweh hardened Pharaoh's heart with strength, and he did not let the sons of Israel go.

The Plague of Darkness

Exo 10:22-23 LSB - [22] So Moses stretched out his hand toward the sky, and there was thick darkness in all the land of Egypt for three days. [23] They did not see one another, nor did anyone rise from his place for three days, but all the sons of Israel had light in their [places of] habitation.

Exo 10:27 LSB - [27] But Yahweh hardened Pharaoh's heart with strength, and he was not willing to let them go.

Yahweh Says One More Plague

Exo 11:9 LSB - [9] Then Yahweh said to Moses, "Pharaoh will not listen to you, so that My miraculous wonders will be multiplied in the land of Egypt."

The Passover Lamb

Exo 12:7-8 LSB - [7] 'Moreover, they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. [8] 'And they shall eat the flesh that night, roasted with fire, and they shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.

Exo 12:11 LSB - [11] 'Now you shall eat it in this manner: [with] your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste--it is the Passover of Yahweh.

Exo 12:13 LSB - [13] 'And the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are; and I will see the blood, and I will pass over you, and there shall be no plague among you to destroy [you] when I strike the land of Egypt.

The Feast of Unleavened Bread

Exo 12:17 LSB - [17] 'You shall also keep the [Feast of] Unleavened Bread, for on this very day I brought your hosts out of the land of Egypt; therefore you shall keep this day throughout your generations as a perpetual statute.

Exo 12:25-27 LSB - [25] "And it will be, when you enter the land which Yahweh will give you, as He has promised, you shall keep this [new] slavery. [26] "And it will be when your children say to you, 'What is the meaning of this [new] slavery to you?' [27] that you shall say, 'It is a Passover sacrifice to Yahweh who passed over the houses of the sons of Israel in Egypt when He smote the Egyptians, but delivered our homes.'" And the people bowed low and worshiped.

Death of the Firstborn of Egypt

Exo 12:29 LSB - [29] Now it happened at midnight that Yahweh struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of cattle.

Israel Goes Out from Egypt

Exo 12:41-42 LSB - [41] And it happened at the end of 430 years, to the very day, that all the hosts of Yahweh went out from the land of Egypt. [42] It is a night to be kept for Yahweh for having brought them out from the land of Egypt; this night is for Yahweh, to be kept by all the sons of Israel throughout their generations.

The Statute of the Passover

Exo 12:48 LSB - [48] "But if a sojourner sojourns with you and celebrates the Passover to Yahweh, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near to celebrate it; and he shall be like a native of the land. But no uncircumcised person may eat of it.

Prayer for children.

Olney Hymns Hymn 12 William Cowper
7,7,7,7

Gracious Lord, our children see,
By thy mercy we are free;
But shall these, alas! remain
Subjects still of Satan’s reign?

Israel’s young ones, when of old
Pharaoh threatened to withhold;
Then thy messenger said, “No;
Let the children also go.”

When the angel of the Lord
Drawing forth his dreadful sword,
Slew, with an avenging hand,
All the first–born of the land:

Then thy peoples’ doors he passed,
Where the bloody sign was placed;
Hear us, now, upon our knees,
Plead the blood of CHRIST for these!

LORD we tremble, for we know
How the fierce malicious foe;
Wheeling round his watchful flight,
Keeps them ever in his sight:

Spread thy pinions, King of kings!
Hide them safe beneath thy wings;
Lest the rav’nous bird of prey
Stoop, and bear the brood away.

Exodus 7-9 - You Do Not Yet Fear Yahweh God

Aaron’s Staff Becomes a Serpent

Exo 7:6-7 LSB - [6] So Moses and Aaron did [it]; as Yahweh commanded them, thus they did. [7] Now Moses was eighty years old and Aaron eighty-three years old, when they spoke to Pharaoh.

Exo 7:12-13 LSB - [12] And each one threw down his staff, and they became serpents. But Aaron's staff swallowed up their staffs. [13] Yet Pharaoh's heart was hardened with strength, and he did not listen to them, as Yahweh had spoken.

The Plague of Water Turning to Blood

Exo 7:20-21 LSB - [20] So Moses and Aaron did thus, as Yahweh had commanded. And he raised up the staff and struck the water that [was] in the Nile, in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants, and all the water that [was] in the Nile was turned to blood. [21] And the fish that [were] in the Nile died, and the Nile became foul, so that the Egyptians could not drink water from the Nile. And the blood was through all the land of Egypt.

Exo 7:22 LSB - [22] Yet the magicians of Egypt did the same with their secret arts; and Pharaoh's heart was hardened with strength, and he did not listen to them, as Yahweh had spoken.

The Plague of Frogs

Exo 8:6-7 LSB - [6] So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt. [7] And the magicians did the same with their secret arts; they caused the frogs to come up on the land of Egypt.

Exo 8:15 LSB - [15] Then Pharaoh saw that there was relief, and he hardened his heart with firmness and did not listen to them, as Yahweh had spoken.

The Plague of Gnats

Exo 8:17 LSB - [17] And they did so; and Aaron stretched out his hand with his staff and struck the dust of the earth, and there were gnats on man and beast. All the dust of the earth became gnats through all the land of Egypt.

Exo 8:19 LSB - [19] And the magicians said to Pharaoh, "This is the finger of God." But Pharaoh's heart was hardened with strength, and he did not listen to them, as Yahweh had spoken.

The Plague of Flies

Exo 8:22-23 LSB - [22] "But on that day I will make a distinction for the land of Goshen, where My people are living, so that no swarms of flies will be there, that you may know that I, Yahweh, am in the midst of the land. [23] "And I will put a division between My people and your people. Tomorrow this sign will happen."'"

Exo 8:32 LSB - [32] Then Pharaoh hardened his heart with firmness this time also, and he did not let the people go.

The Plague of Dying Egyptian Livestock

Exo 9:4 LSB - [4] "But Yahweh will make a distinction between the livestock of Israel and the livestock of Egypt, so that nothing will die of all that belongs to the sons of Israel."'"

Exo 9:7 LSB - [7] And Pharaoh sent, and behold, there was not even one of the livestock of Israel dead. But the heart of Pharaoh was hardened with firmness, and he did not let the people go.

The Plague of Boils

Exo 9:10 LSB - [10] So they took the soot from the kiln and stood before Pharaoh; and Moses tossed it toward the sky, and it became boils breaking out with sores on man and beast.

The Plague of Hail

Exo 9:27-28 LSB - [27] Then Pharaoh sent and called for Moses and Aaron and said to them, "I have sinned this time; Yahweh is the righteous one, and I and my people are the wicked ones. [28] "Entreat Yahweh, for God's thunder and hail are too much; and I will let you go, and you shall stay no longer."

Exo 9:30 LSB - [30] "But as for you and your servants, I know that you do not yet fear Yahweh God."

Exo 9:34-35 LSB - [34] But Pharaoh saw that the rain and the hail and the thunder had ceased. So he sinned again and hardened his heart with firmness, he and his servants. [35] And Pharaoh's heart was hardened with strength, and he did not let the sons of Israel go, just as Yahweh had spoken by the hand of Moses.

Exodus 4-6 - Let My people go

If They Will Not Believe These Signs

Exo 4:1 LSB - [1] Then Moses answered and said, "What if they will not believe me and will not listen to my voice? For they may say, 'Yahweh has not appeared to you.'"

Exo 4:9 LSB - [9] "But if it will be that they will not believe even these two signs and that they will not listen to your voice, then you shall take some water from the Nile and pour it on the dry land; and the water which you take from the Nile will become blood on the dry land."

Aaron to Speak for Moses

Exo 4:11-12 LSB - [11] And Yahweh said to him, "Who has made man's mouth? Or who makes [him] mute or deaf, or seeing or blind? Is it not I, Yahweh? [12] "So now, go, and I, even I, will be with your mouth and will instruct you what you shall speak."

Moses Returns to Egypt

Exo 4:21 LSB - [21] And Yahweh said to Moses, "When you go to return to Egypt, see [to it] that all the miraculous wonders which I have put in your hand, that you do them before Pharaoh; but as for Me, I will harden his heart with strength so that he will not let the people go.

Exo 4:24-26 LSB - [24] Now it happened at the lodging place on the way that Yahweh encountered him and sought to put him to death. [25] Then Zipporah took a flint and cut off her son's foreskin and touched his feet with it, and she said, "You are indeed a bridegroom of blood to me!" [26] So He let him alone. At that time she said, "[You are] a bridegroom of blood" with reference to the circumcision.

Pharaoh Will Not Let the People Go

Exo 5:1 LSB - [1] And afterward Moses and Aaron came and said to Pharaoh, "Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, 'Let My people go that they may celebrate a feast to Me in the wilderness.'"

When Israel was in Egypt’s land,
Let My people go,
Oppressed so hard they could not stand,
Let My people go.

Refrain

Go down, Moses,
Way down in Egypt’s land,
Tell old Pharaoh,
To let My people go.

Thus saith the Lord, bold Moses said,
Let My people go,
If not I’ll smite your first born dead,
Let My people go.

Refrain

No more in bondage shall they toil,
Let My people go,
Let them come out with Egypt’s spoil,
Let My people go.

Refrain

Exo 5:23 LSB - [23] "Ever since I came to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has done harm to this people, and You have not delivered Your people at all."

Exo 6:9 LSB - [9] So Moses spoke thus to the sons of Israel, but they did not listen to Moses on account of [their] weakness of spirit and hard slavery.

The Heads of Israel’s Households

Exo 6:26 LSB - [26] It was [the same] Aaron and Moses to whom Yahweh said, "Bring out the sons of Israel from the land of Egypt according to their hosts."

Exo 7:6-7 LSB - [6] So Moses and Aaron did [it]; as Yahweh commanded them, thus they did. [7] Now Moses was eighty years old and Aaron eighty-three years old, when they spoke to Pharaoh.

Parable of Ten Virgins

Mat 25:1 LSB - [1] "Then the kingdom of heaven may be compared to ten virgins, who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.

Mat 25:10-13 LSB - [10] "And while they were going away to make the purchase, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast; and the door was shut. [11] "And later the other virgins also came, saying, 'Lord, lord, open up for us.' [12] "But he answered and said, 'Truly I say to you, I do not know you.' Parable of the Wedding Feast

[14] "For many are called, but few [are] chosen."

Mat 11:27 LSB - [27] "All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal [Him].

1Co 1:23-24 LSB - [23] but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness, [24] but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

The Foremost Commandment

Mat 22:37-40 LSB - [37] And He said to him, "'YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.' [38] "This is the great and foremost commandment. HYMN 116 Love to God and our neighbor
Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts  8,8,8,8

Thus saith the first, the great command,
"Let all thy inward powers unite
To love thy Maker and thy God
With utmost vigor and delight.

"Then shall thy neighbor next in place
Share thine affections and esteem,
And let thy kindness to thyself
Measure and rule thy love to him."

This is the sense that Moses spoke,
This did the prophets preach and prove;
For want of this the law is broke,
And the whole law's fulfilled by love.

But O! how base our passions are!
How cold our charity and zeal!
Lord, fill our souls with heav'nly fire,
Or we shall ne'er perform thy will.

[31] "So you bear witness against yourselves, that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets.

Mat 23:34-35 LSB - [34] "On account of this, behold, I am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will flog in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city, [35] so that upon you may fall [the guilt of] all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.

[30] "And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the SON OF MAN COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF THE SKY with power and great glory.
[31] "And He will send forth His angels with A GREAT TRUMPET and THEY WILL GATHER TOGETHER His elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other.

The Parable of the Fig Tree

Mat 24:36 LSB - [36] "But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.

Mat 24:39-41 LSB - [39] and they did not understand until the flood came and took them all away; so will the coming of the Son of Man be. Jesus, I My Cross Have Taken by Henry Francis Lyte

All to leave and follow thee;
Destitute, despis'd, forsaken,
Thou from hence my all shalt be.
Perish, ev'ry fond ambition,
All I've sought, and hop'd, and known;
Yet how rich is my condition;
God and Heav'n are still my own!

2. Let the world despise and leave me;
They have left my Savior, too;
Human hearts and looks deceive me;
Thou art not, like them, untrue;
And while thou shalt smile upon me,
God of wisdom, love, and might,
Foes may hate, and friends may shun me;
Show thy face, and all is bright!

3. Go then, earthly fame and treasure!
Come, disaster, scorn, and pain!
In thy service, pain is pleasure;
With thy favor, loss is gain.
I have called thee Abba, Father;
I have stayed my heart on thee;
Storms may howl, and clouds may gather;
All must work for good to me.

4. Haste then on from grace to glory,
Arm'd by faith, and wing'd by pray'r;
Heav'n's eternal day before thee;
God's own hand shall guide me there.
Soon shall close thy earthly mission;
Swift shall pass thy pilgrim days;
Hope soon change to glad fruition,

The Transfiguration

Mat 17:1-3 LSB - [1] And six days later Jesus brought with Him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up on a high mountain by themselves. Jesus Casts Out a Demon

Mat 17:20 LSB - [20] And He said to them, "Because of your little faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.

The Temple Tax

Lord, it is good for us to be by Arthur Penrhyn Stanley

1 Lord, it is good for us to be
High on the mountain here with Thee;
Where stand revealed to mortal gaze
Those glorious saints of other days;
Who once received on Horeb's height
The eternal laws of truth and right;
Or caught the still small whisper, higher
Than storm, than earthquake, or than fire.

2 Lord, it is good for us to be
Entranced, enwrapt, alone with Thee;
And watch Thy glistering raiment glow
Whiter than Hermon's whitest snow,
The human lineaments that shine
Irradiant with a light divine:
Till we too change from grace to grace,
Gazing on that transfigured face.

3 Lord, it is good for us to be
Here on the holy mount with Thee;
When darkling in the depths of night,
When dazzled with excess of light,
We bow before the heavenly voice
That bids bewildered souls rejoice,
Though love wax cold, and faith be dim,
"This is My Son; O hear ye Him!"
Amen.

Who Is Greatest in Heaven?

Mat 18:3-4 LSB - [3] and said, "Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. [4] "Whoever therefore will humble himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Stumbling Blocks

Mat 18:10 LSB - [10] "See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven continually see the face of My Father who is in heaven.

The Parable of the Lost Sheep

Mat 18:12-13 LSB - [12] "What do you think? If any man has one hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go and search for the one that is straying? [13] "And if it turns out that he finds it, truly I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine which have not gone astray.

I will sing the wondrous story
Author: Francis H. Rowley (1886)

1 I will sing the wondrous story
Of the Christ who died for me.
How He left His home in glory
For the cross of Calvary.
I was lost, but Jesus found me,
Found the sheep that went astray,
Threw His loving arms around me,
Drew me back into His way.

2 I was bruised, but Jesus healed me;
Faint was I from many a fall;
Sight was gone, and fears possessed me,
But He freed me from them all.
Days of darkness still come o'er me,
Sorrow's paths I often tread,
But the Savior still is with me;
By His hand I'm safely led.

3 He will keep me till the river
Rolls its waters at my feet;
Then He'll bear me safely over,
Where the loved ones I shall meet.
Yes, I'll sing the wondrous story
Of the Christ who died for me,
Sing it with the saints in glory,
Gathered by the crystal sea.

If Your Brother Sins

Mat 18:19-20 LSB - [19] "Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in heaven. [20] "For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst."

Forgiveness

Mat 18:33 LSB - [33] 'Should you not also have had mercy on your fellow slave, in the same way that I had mercy on you?'

Mat 18:35 LSB - [35] "My heavenly Father will also do the same to you, if each of you does not forgive his brother from your hearts."

Mat 13:16-17 LSB - [16] "But blessed are your eyes, because they see; and your ears, because they hear. [17] "For truly I say to you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see, and did not see [it], and to hear what you hear, and did not hear [it].

Mat 13:23 LSB - [23] "And the one on whom seed was sown on the good soil, this is the man who hears the word and understands it; who indeed bears fruit and brings forth, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty."

GOD, AS WE STAND AMID YOUR WORLD by Richard Adams

God, as we stand amid Your world,
Gazing on waiting lands,
Lord of the harvest, seize our hearts,
Employ our idle hands.

Show us the fields of greatest need,
Bless and prepare the soil;
Give us Your seed to sow abroad,
Guide and direct our toil.

Strengthen our arm to sow today,
Equip us for the hour;
Shield us from beast and sword alike,
Protect us by Your power.

Bless now the holy Word we sow—
May it find fertile ground;
Keep it from thorns and scorching sun,
Make the green blade abound.

“Shun hard, smooth paths and waysides bright,
Through and around the field;
For work and labor lightly done
Return but little yield.

Fret not when noxious weeds arise
Among the growing grain;
They will be burned at harvest time,
And golden wheat remain.

The Parable of Tares Among Wheat

Mat 13:30 LSB - [30] 'Allow both to grow together until the harvest; and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, "First gather up the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them up; but gather the wheat into my barn."'"

Parables of the Mustard Seed and Leaven

Mat 13:31-32 LSB - [31] He presented another parable to them, saying, "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field; [32] and this is the smallest of all seeds, but when it is fully grown, it is the largest of the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that THE BIRDS OF THE AIR come and NEST IN ITS BRANCHES."

The Parable of Tares Explained

Mat 13:43 LSB - [43] "Then THE RIGHTEOUS WILL SHINE FORTH AS THE SUN in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.

Dan 12:2-3 LSB - [2] "And many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground will awake, these to everlasting life, but the others to reproach [and] everlasting contempt. [3] "And those who have insight will shine brightly like the brightness of the expanse [of heaven], and those who lead the many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.

A Hidden Treasure

A Costly Pearl

A Dragnet

Mat 13:49-50 LSB - [49] "So it will be at the end of the age; the angels will come forth and take out the wicked from among the righteous, [50] and will throw them into the fiery furnace; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

Mat 13:57-58 LSB - [57] And they were taking offense at Him. But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his [own] household." [58] And He did not do many miracles there because of their unbelief.

Mat 11:6 LSB - [6] "And blessed is he who does not take offense at Me."

John the Baptist Beheaded

Mat 14:13 LSB - [13] Now when Jesus heard [about John], He withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by Himself; and when the crowds heard [of this], they followed Him on foot from the cities.

Jesus Feeds Five Thousand

Mat 14:16 LSB - [16] But Jesus said to them, "They do not need to go away; you give them [something] to eat!"

Jesus Walks on the Sea

Mat 14:29-31 LSB - [29] And He said, "Come!" And getting out of the boat, Peter walked on the water and came toward Jesus. [30] But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, "Lord, save me!" [31] And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and said to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?"

1. Out on the midnight deep
Hear Thou my cry;
Come to my rescue, Lord,
Save or I die.
Let not the stormy waves
Break over me;
Reach out Thy loving arm,
Draw me to Thee.

Refrain

Draw me to Thee, Savior,
Draw me to Thee;
Reach out Thy loving arm,
Draw me to Thee.

2. Hope of the desolate,
Light of my soul,
Now of my lonely bark,
Take Thou control.
Yonder the ark of grace
Dimly I see;
Reach out Thy loving arm,
Draw me to Thee.

Refrain

3. Lord, at the open door,
Let me come in,
Heal Thou my broken heart,
Weary of sin.
Close to Thy bleeding side
Still would I be;
Reach out Thy loving arm,
Draw me to Thee.

Refrain

Mat 14:34-36 LSB - [34] And when they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret. [35] And when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent [word] into all that surrounding district and brought to Him all who were sick; [36] and they were pleading [with] Him that they might just touch the fringe of His garment; and as many as touched [it] were cured.

God’s Commandments, Man’s Traditions

Mat 15:13-14 LSB - [13] But He answered and said, "Every plant which My heavenly Father did not plant shall be uprooted. [14] "Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if a blind man guides a blind man, both will fall into a pit."

The Heart of Man

Mat 15:18-19 LSB - [18] "But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man. [19] "For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false witness, slanders.

The Canaanite Woman

Mat 15:26-27 LSB - [26] And He answered and said, "It is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." [27] But she said, "Yes, Lord; but even the dogs feed on the crumbs which fall from their masters' table."

NOT WORTHY, LORD, TO GATHER UP THE CRUMBS by Edward H. Bickersteth

Not worthy, Lord, to gather up the crumbs
With trembling hand that from Thy table fall,
A weary, heavy laden sinner comes
To plead Thy promise and obey Thy call.

I am not worthy to be thought Thy child,
Nor sit the last and lowest at Thy board;
Too long a wanderer and too oft beguiled;
I only ask one reconciling word.

One word from Thee, my Lord, one smile, one look,
And I could face the cold, rough world again;
And with that treasure in my heart could brook
The wrath of devils and the scorn of men.

And is not mercy Thy prerogative—
Free mercy, boundless, fathomless, divine?
Me, Lord, the chief of sinners, me forgive,
And Thine the greater glory, only Thine.

I hear Thy voice; Thou bidd’st me come and rest;
I come, I kneel, I clasp Thy piercèd feet;
Thou bidd’st me take my place, a welcome guest
Among Thy saints, and of Thy banquet eat.

My praise can only breathe itself in prayer,
My prayer can only lose itself in Thee;
Dwell Thou forever in my heart, and there,
Lord, let me sup with Thee; sup Thou with me.

Jesus Heals the Crowds

Mat 15:31 LSB - [31] So the crowd marveled as they saw the mute speaking, the crippled restored, and the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel.

Jesus Feeds Four Thousand

Mat 15:36 LSB - [36] and He took the seven loaves and the fish; and giving thanks, He broke them and kept giving them to the disciples, and the disciples [gave them] to the crowds.

Matthew 10-12 - Come to Me

Jesus Appoints the Twelve

Mat 10:1 LSB - [1] And summoning His twelve disciples, [Jesus] gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every kind of disease and every kind of sickness.

The Twelve Disciples Sent Out

Mat 10:5-6 LSB - [5] These twelve Jesus sent out after instructing them, saying, "Do not go in the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter [any] city of the Samaritans; [6] but rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

Mat 10:14-15 LSB - [14] "And whoever does not receive you, nor heed your words, as you leave that house or that city, shake the dust off your feet. [15] "Truly I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city.

The Promise of Persecution

Mat 10:19-20 LSB - [19] "But when they deliver you over, do not worry about how or what you are to say; for it will be given to you in that hour what you are to say. [20] "For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.

Mat 10:23 LSB - [23] "But whenever they persecute you in this city, flee to the next; for truly I say to you, you will not finish [going through] the cities of Israel until the Son of Man comes.

f. You will not have gone through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes: This is one of the hardest-to-understand statements of Jesus in Matthew. Could Jesus really mean that He would return to this earth before the disciples would make it through all the cities of Israel? If so, this would make Jesus plainly wrong in this prediction. Instead, it is better to see His “coming” in this passage as His coming in judgment upon Judea in AD 70 which did happen before the gospel came to every city in Israel.

i. This is the fulfillment of the day of judgment warned of in Matthew 10:15. In many ways, the judgment poured out by God upon Judea through the Roman armies in AD 70 was worse than the judgment that came upon Sodom and Gomorrah.

The Meaning of Discipleship

Mat 10:30-31 LSB - [30] "But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. [31] "So do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows.

Mat 10:32-33 LSB - [32] "Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven. [33] "But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven.

Mat 10:37-39 LSB - [37] "He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. [38] "And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. [39] "He who has found his life will lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake will find it.

The Reward of Service

Mat 10:40 LSB - [40] "He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.

Mat 10:42 LSB - [42] "And whoever in the name of a disciple gives to one of these little ones even a cup of cold water to drink, truly I say to you, he shall not lose his reward."

Take up thy cross, the Savior said,
If thou wouldst My disciple be;
Deny thyself, the world forsake,
And humbly follow after Me.

Take up thy cross, let not its weight
Fill thy weak spirit with alarm;
His strength shall bear thy spirit up,
And brace thy heart and nerve thine arm.

Take up thy cross, nor heed the shame,
Nor let thy foolish pride rebel;
Thy Lord for thee the cross endured,
And saved thy soul from death and hell.

Take up thy cross then in His strength,
And calmly sin’s wild deluge brave,
’Twill guide thee to a better home,
It points to glory o’er the grave.

Take up thy cross and follow Christ,
Nor think til death to lay it down;
For only those who bear the cross
May hope to wear the glorious crown.

To Thee, great Lord, the One in Three,
All praise forevermore ascend:
O grant us in our home to see
The heavenly life that knows no end.

Questions from John the Baptist

Mat 11:4-6 LSB - [4] And Jesus answered and said to them, "Go and report to John what you hear and see: [5] [the] BLIND RECEIVE SIGHT and [the] lame walk, [the] lepers are cleansed and [the] deaf hear, [the] dead are raised up, and [the] POOR HAVE THE GOSPEL PREACHED TO THEM. [6] "And blessed is he who does not take offense at Me."

Jesus’ Tribute to John the Baptist

Mat 11:12 LSB - [12] "And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and violent men take it by force.

iii. “Frequently complaints are made and surprise expressed by individuals who have never found a blessing rest upon anything they have attempted to do in the service of God. ‘I have been a Sunday-school teacher for years,’ says one, ‘and I have never seen any of my girls or boys converted.’ No, and the reason most likely is you have never been violent about it; you have never been compelled by the Divine Spirit to make up your mind that converted they should be, and no stone should be left unturned until they were. You have never been brought by the Spirit to such a passion, that you have said, ‘I cannot live unless God bless me. I cannot exist unless I see some of these children saved.’ Then, falling on your knees in agony of prayer, and putting forth afterwards your trust with the same intensity towards heaven, you would never have been disappointed, ‘for the violent take it by force.’” (Spurgeon)

Woe to Unrepentant Cities

Mat 11:20 LSB - [20] Then He began to denounce the cities in which most of His miracles were done, because they did not repent.

Come to Me

Mat 11:27 LSB - [27] "All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal [Him].

Mat 11:28-30 LSB - [28] "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. [29] "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. [30] "For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."

Come unto Me, and rest! [Refrain]

A Kingdom Divided

Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit

The Heart Is Revealed by Words

Mat 12:37 LSB - [37] "For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned."

The Sign of Jonah

Mat 12:39-40 LSB - [39] But He answered and said to them, "An evil and adulterous generation eagerly seeks for a sign; and [yet] no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet; [40] for just as JONAH WAS THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE BELLY OF THE SEA MONSTER, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers

Mat 12:50 LSB - [50] "For whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven, he is My brother and sister and mother."
