John 19-21 Jesus’ Command to Follow Him

Jesus Flogged and Rejected as King

Jhn 19:1 LSB - [1] Pilate then took Jesus and flogged Him.

The Crucifixion

Jhn 19:17-18 LSB -
[17] They took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha.
[18] There they crucified Him, and with Him two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between.

Scripture Fulfilled--It Is Finished

Jhn 19:28 LSB - [28] After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been finished, in order to finish the Scripture, said, "I am thirsty."

Jhn 19:36-37 LSB -
[36] For these things came to pass in order that the Scripture would be fulfilled, "NOT A BONE OF HIM SHALL BE BROKEN."
[37] And again another Scripture says, "THEY SHALL LOOK ON HIM WHOM THEY PIERCED."

Jesus Is Buried

Jhn 19:41-42 LSB -
[41] Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.
[42] Therefore because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.

The Empty Tomb

Jhn 20:1-2 LSB -
[1] Now on the first [day] of the week, Mary Magdalene came early to the tomb, while it was still dark, and saw the stone [already] taken away from the tomb.
[2] So she ran and came to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him."

Jesus Appears to Mary MagdaleneJhn 20:17-18 LSB -

[17] Jesus said to her, "Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brothers and say to them, 'I ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.'"
[18] Mary Magdalene came, announcing to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord," and [that] He had said these things to her.

Jesus Appears to His Disciples

Jhn 20:21-23 LSB -
[21] So Jesus said to them again, "Peace [be] with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you."
[22] And when He had said this, He breathed on [them] and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.
[23] "If you forgive the sins of any, [their sins] have been forgiven them; if you retain the [sins] of any, they have been retained."

Why This Gospel Was Written

Jhn 20:30-31 LSB -
[30] Therefore many other signs Jesus also did in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book;
[31] but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.

Jesus Appears at the Sea of Galilee

Jhn 21:3 LSB - [3] Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We will also come with you." They went out and got into the boat; and that night they caught nothing.

Jhn 21:9-11 LSB -
[9] So when they got out on the land, they saw a charcoal fire in place and fish placed on it, and bread. [10] Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish which you have now caught."
[11] Simon Peter went up and drew the net to land, full of large fish, 153; and although there were so many, the net was not torn.

Peter’s Restoration and Commission

Jhn 21:17 LSB - [17] He said to him the third time, "Simon, [son] of John, do you love Me?" Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, "Do you love Me?" And he said to Him, "Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You." Jesus said to him, "Tend My sheep.

Jesus’ Command to Follow Him

Jhn 21:19 LSB - [19] Now this He said, signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, "Follow Me!"

Jhn 21:25 LSB - [25] And there are also many other things which Jesus did, which if they were written one after the other, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.
