Proverbs 7-9 - The fear of Yahweh is to hate evil

Warning Against the Adulteress

Pro 7:1-3 LSB -
[1] My son, keep my words
And treasure my commandments within you.
[2] Keep my commandments and live,
And my law as the apple of your eye.
[3] Bind them on your fingers;
Write them on the tablet of your heart.

Pro 7:22-23 LSB - [22] He suddenly follows her As an ox goes to the slaughter, Or as [one in] fetters to the discipline of an ignorant fool, [23] Until an arrow pierces through his liver; As a bird hastens to the snare, And he does not know that it [will cost him] his soul.

I want a principle within Of watchful, godly fear

Author: Charles Wesley (1749)
Tune: GERALD (Spohr)

1 I want a principle within
of watchful, godly fear,
a sensibility of sin,
a pain to feel it near.
I want the first approach to feel
of pride or wrong desire,
to catch the wand’ring of my will,
and quench the kindling fire.

2 From Thee that I no more may stray,
no more Thy goodness grieve,
grand me the filial awe, I pray,
the tender conscience give.
Quick as the apple of an eye,
O God, my conscience make,
awake my soul when sin is nigh,
and keep it still awake.

3 Almighty God of truth and love,
to me Thy pow’r impart;
the mountain from my soul remove,
the hardness from my heart.
O may the least omission pain
my reawakened soul,
and drive me to that blood again,
which makes the wounded whole.

The Blessing of Wisdom

Pro 8:13 LSB - [13] "The fear of Yahweh is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the mouth of perverted [words], I hate.

Pro 8:17 LSB - [17] "I love those who love me; And those who earnestly seek me will find me.

Pro 8:22 LSB - [22] "Yahweh possessed me at the beginning of His way, Before His deeds of old.

Pro 8:23 LSB - [23] "From everlasting I was installed, From the beginning, from the earliest times of the earth.

Pro 8:27 LSB - [27] "When He established the heavens, I was there, When He marked out a circle on the face of the deep,

Pro 8:34 LSB - [34] "How blessed is the man who hears me, To watch daily at my doors, To keep watch at my doorposts.

I sing th' almighty power of God

Author: Isaac Watts (1715)

1 We sing the mighty power of God
that made the mountains rise,
that spread the flowing seas abroad
and built the lofty skies.
We sing the wisdom that ordained
the sun to rule the day;
the moon shines full at his command,
and all the stars obey.

2 We sing the goodness of the Lord
that filled the earth with food;
he formed the creatures with his word
and then pronounced them good.
Lord, how your wonders are displayed,
where'er we turn our eyes,
if we survey the ground we tread
or gaze upon the skies.

3 There's not a plant or flower below
but makes your glories known,
and clouds arise and tempests blow
by order from your throne;
while all that borrows life from you
is ever in your care,
and everywhere that we can be,
you, God, are present there.
