The Temptation of Jesus

[Luk 4:1-2 LSB]

[2] for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And He ate nothing during those days, and when they had finished, He was hungry.

Devil’s Temptation

Jesus’ Declaration

If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.

[Luk 4:4 LSB]

[4] And Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE.'"

I will give You all this dominion and its glory, for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish.

Therefore if You worship before me, it shall all be Yours.

[Luk 4:8 LSB]

[8] And Jesus answered and said to him, "It is written, 'YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD AND SERVE HIM ONLY.'"

If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here,

for it is written,

‘HE WILL COMMAND HIS ANGELS CONCERNING YOU TO GUARD YOU,’

and,

‘ON their HANDS THEY WILL BEAR YOU UP,

LEST YOU STRIKE YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE.’

[Luk 4:12 LSB]

[12] And Jesus answered and said to him, "It is said, 'YOU SHALL NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST.'"

[Luk 4:17-19 LSB]
[17] And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the scroll and found the place where it was written,
[18] "THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME, BECAUSE HE ANOINTED ME TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR. HE HAS SENT ME TO PROCLAIM RELEASE TO THE CAPTIVES, AND RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND, TO SET FREE THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED, [19] TO PROCLAIM THE FAVORABLE YEAR OF THE LORD."

[Isa 61:1-2 LSB]
[1] The Spirit of Lord Yahweh is upon me Because Yahweh has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim release to captives And freedom to prisoners,
[2] To proclaim the favorable year of Yahweh ...

[Luk 4:21 LSB]
[21] And He began to say to them, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."

[Jhn 4:25-26 LSB]
[25] The woman said to Him, "I know that Messiah is coming (He who is called Christ); when He comes, He will declare all things to us."
[26] Jesus said to her, "I who speak to you am [He]."

The First Disciples

[Luk 5:10-11 LSB]
[10] and James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon, [were] also likewise [amazed]. And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not fear, from now on you will be catching men."

[18] And behold, [some] men [were] carrying on a stretcher a man who was paralyzed; and they were trying to bring him in and to set him down before Him.
[19] But not finding any [way] to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down through the tiles with his stretcher, into the middle [of the crowd], in front of Jesus.
[20] And seeing their faith, He said, "Friend, your sins are forgiven you."

Levi and Sinners Called

[Luk 5:31-32 LSB]

Love Your Enemies

[Luk 6:35-36 LSB]
[35] "But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to the ungrateful and evil.

[Luk 6:47-48 LSB]
[47] "Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and does them, I will show you whom he is like: [48] he is like a man building a house, who dug and went deep, and laid a foundation on the rock; and when a flood occurred, the river burst against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.
