Obadiah 1 & Haggai 1-2

Obadiah

Edom Will Be Brought Down

Oba 1:3-4 LSB -
[3] "The arrogance of your heart has deceived you, You who dwell in the clefts of the cliff, In the height of your habitation, Who says in his heart, 'Who will bring me down to earth?'
[4] "Though you build loftily like the eagle, Though you set your nest among the stars, From there I will bring you down," declares Yahweh.

The Day of Yahweh Is Near

Oba 1:18 LSB - [18] "Then the house of Jacob will be a fire And the house of Joseph a flame; But the house of Esau [will be] as stubble. And they will set them on fire and consume them So that there will be no survivor of the house of Esau," For Yahweh has spoken.

The Kingdom of Yahweh

Oba 1:21 LSB - [21] And the saviors will ascend Mount Zion To judge the mountain of Esau, And the kingdom will belong to Yahweh.

Haggai

The Commission to Rebuild the Temple

Hag 1:14-15 LSB -
[14] So Yahweh stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work on the house of Yahweh of hosts, their God,
[15] on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month in the second year of Darius the king.

The Glory of Yahweh Will Fill the Temple

Hag 2:7-9 LSB -
[7] 'And I will shake all the nations; and they will come with the desirable things of all nations, and I will fill this house with glory,' says Yahweh of hosts.
[8] 'The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine,' declares Yahweh of hosts.
[9] 'The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former,' says Yahweh of hosts, 'and in this place I will give peace,' declares Yahweh of hosts."

Daniel 10-12 - You will enter into rest and stand [again]

Daniel’s Terrifying Vision of a Man

Dan 10:1 LSB - [1] In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia, a word was revealed to Daniel, who was named Belteshazzar; and the word was true and [one of] great conflict, but he understood the word and had an understanding of what had appeared.

Dan 10:5-6 LSB -
[5] I lifted my eyes and looked, and behold, there was a certain man dressed in linen, whose loins were girded with [a belt of] pure fine gold of Uphaz
[6] His body also [was] like beryl, his face had the appearance of lightning, his eyes were like flaming torches, his arms and feet like the gleam of burnished bronze, and the sound of his words like the sound of a multitude.

Daniel Is Strengthened

Dan 10:12 LSB - [12] Then he said to me, "Do not be afraid, Daniel, for from the first day that you gave your heart to understand [this] and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come [in response] to your words.

Kingdoms and Wars

The End of the Days

Dan 12:1-3 LSB -
[1] "Now at that time, Michael, the great prince who stands [guard] over the sons of your people, will stand. And there will be a time of distress such as never happened since there was a nation until that time; and at that time your people, everyone who is found written in the book, will be rescued.
[2] "And many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground will awake, these to everlasting life, but the others to reproach [and] everlasting contempt.
[3] "And those who have insight will shine brightly like the brightness of the expanse [of heaven], and those who lead the many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.

Dan 12:11-12 LSB -
[11] "But from the time that the regular sacrifice is abolished and the abomination of desolation is set up, [there will be] 1,290 days
[12] "How blessed is he who keeps waiting and reaches the 1,335 days!

Rev 11:3 LSB - [3] "And I will give [authority] to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth."

Rev 12:6 LSB - [6] Then the woman fled into the wilderness where she had a place prepared by God, so that there she would be nourished for 1,260 days.

Dan 12:13 LSB - [13] "But as for you, go [your way] to the end; then you will enter into rest and stand [again] for your allotted portion at the end of the days."

Daniel 7-9 - Seventy Weeks and the Messiah

The Vision of the Four Beasts

Dan 7:7-8 LSB -
[7] "After this I kept looking in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, fearsome and terrifying and extraordinarily strong; and it had large iron teeth. It devoured and crushed and trampled down the remainder with its feet; and it was different from all the beasts that were before it, and it had ten horns.
[8] "While I was contemplating the horns, behold, another horn, a little one, came up among them, and three of the first horns were pulled out by the roots before it; and behold, this horn possessed eyes like the eyes of a man and a mouth speaking great [boasts].

Dan. 7:8 Even more surprisingly, another small horn came up among the horns, uprooting three of the 10 others. This horn had eyes and a mouth that spoke arrogantly. The 10 horns likely signify 10 rulers or kingdoms. The little horn was significantly different than the others, for it had teeth of iron, claws of bronze, and eyes like the eyes of a man. It started “little” but grew up to overpower three of the other horns. Some scholars understand this horn to refer to Antiochus IV Epiphanes, but many have understood it to refer to the Antichrist.

The Ancient of Days

Dan 7:9-10 LSB -
[9] "I kept looking
Until thrones were set up,
And the Ancient of Days was seated;
His clothing [was] like white snow
And the hair of His head like pure wool.
His throne [was] ablaze with fire,
Its wheels [were] a burning fire.
[10] "A river of fire was flowing
And coming out from before Him;
Thousands upon thousands were attending Him,
And myriads upon myriads were standing before Him;
The court sat,
And the books were opened.

The Son of Man

Dan 7:13-14 LSB -
[13] "I kept looking in the night visions,
And behold, with the clouds of heaven
One like a Son of Man was coming,
And He came up to the Ancient of Days
And came near before Him.
[14] "And to Him was given dominion,
Glory, and a kingdom,
That all the peoples, nations, and [men of every] tongue
Might serve Him.
His dominion is an everlasting dominion
Which will not be taken away;
And His kingdom is one
Which will not be destroyed.

The Vision Interpreted

Dan 7:17-18 LSB -
[17] 'These great beasts, which are four [in number], are four kings [who] will arise from the earth.
[18] 'But the saints of the Highest One will receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, for all ages to come.'

Dan 7:27 LSB - [27] 'Then the reign, the dominion, and the greatness of [all] the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be given to the people of the saints of the Highest One; His kingdom [will be] an everlasting kingdom, and all the dominions will serve and obey Him.'

The Vision of the Ram and Goat

Dan 8:8 LSB - [8] Then the male goat magnified [itself] exceedingly. But as soon as it was mighty, the large horn was broken; and in its place there came up four conspicuous [horns] toward the four winds of heaven.

The Small Horn

Dan 8:11 LSB - [11] And it even magnified [itself] to be equal with the Commander of the host; and it removed the regular sacrifice from Him, and the place of His sanctuary was thrown down.

Dan. 8:11 The Prince of the host probably refers to God, because of the similar expression “Prince of princes” in v. 25. the place of his sanctuary was overthrown. When the Jews refused to adopt Antiochus IV’s pagan religion, he punished them severely.
Dan. 8:12–14 Because of renewed transgression on the part of God’s people, the saints and the temple sacrifices were handed over to Antiochus IV, but only for a limited period: 2,300 evenings and mornings, or a little over six years. In the end, the little horn will be judged and the sanctuary restored to its rightful state. Unlike the less precise “time, times, and half a time” of 7:25, this period is measured in days, suggesting that God has a precise calendar for the times of his people’s suffering.

Daniel Seeks to Understand the Vision

Dan 8:20-22 LSB -
[20] "The ram which you saw with the two horns is the kings of Media and Persia.
[21] "Now the shaggy goat is the king of Greece, and the large horn that is between his eyes is the first king.
[22] "And the broken [horn] and the four [horns that] stood in its place [are] four kingdoms [which] will [take their] stand from [his] nation, although not with his power.

Dan 8:26 LSB - [26] "And what had appeared about the evenings and mornings Which has been told is true; But as for you, conceal the vision, For [it] pertains to many days [in the future]."

Daniel’s Prayer of Supplication

Dan 9:2 LSB - [2] in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, discerned in the books the number of the years [concerning] which the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah the prophet for the fulfillment of the laying waste of Jerusalem, [namely], seventy years.

Jer 25:11-12 LSB -
[11] 'This whole land will be a waste place and an object of horror, and these nations will serve the king of Babylon seventy years.
[12] 'Then it will be when seventy years are fulfilled, [that] I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation,' declares Yahweh, 'for their iniquity, even the land of the Chaldeans; and I will make it an everlasting desolation.

Dan 9:18-19 LSB -
[18] "O my God, incline Your ear and listen! Open Your eyes and see our desolations and the city which is called by Your name; for we are not presenting our supplications before You on account of [any] righteousness of our own, but on account of Your abundant compassion.
[19] "O Lord, listen! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, give heed and take action! For Your own sake, O my God, do not delay, because Your city and Your people are called by Your name."

Gabriel Brings Understanding

Seventy Weeks and the Messiah

Dan 9:24-27 LSB -
[24] "Seventy weeks have been determined for your people and for your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint [the] Holy of Holies.
[25] "So you are to know and have insight [that] from the going out of a word to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince, [there will be] seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; it will be restored and rebuilt, with plaza and moat, even in times of distress.
[26] "Then after the sixty-two weeks the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. And its end [will come] with a flood; even to the end there will be war; desolations are decreed.
[27] "And he will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will make sacrifice and grain offering cease; and on the wing of abominations [will come] one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate."

Daniel 4-6 Daniel in the Lions’ Den

Nebuchadnezzar Declares the Most High God

Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream of a Great Tree

Dan 4:16 LSB - [16] "Let his heart be changed from [that of] a man, And let the heart of a beast be given to him, And let seven periods of time pass over him.

Daniel Interprets the Dream

Dan 4:27 LSB - [27] 'Therefore, O king, may my advice seem good to you: break away now from your sins by [doing] righteousness and from your iniquities by showing mercy to [the] poor, in case there may be a prolonging of your prosperity.'

The Dream Is Accomplished

Dan 4:37 LSB - [37] "Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise, exalt, and honor the King of heaven, for all His works are true and His ways just, and He is able to humble those who walk in pride."

Belshazzar’s Feast

Daniel Interprets the Writing on the Wall

Dan 5:25-28 LSB -
[25] "Now this is the writing that was inscribed: 'MENĒ, MENĒ, TEKĒL, UPHARSIN.'
[26] "This is the interpretation of the message: 'MENĒ'--God has numbered your kingdom and put an end to it.
[27] "'TEKĒL'--you have been weighed on the scales and found lacking.
[28] "'PERĒS'--your kingdom has been divided and given over to the Medes and Persians."

Darius’ Officials Seek to Accuse Daniel

Dan 6:10 LSB - [10] Now when Daniel knew that the written [document] was signed, he entered his house (now in his roof chamber he had windows open toward Jerusalem); and he continued kneeling on his knees three times a day, praying and giving thanks before his God, as he had been doing previously.

Daniel in the Lions’ Den

Dan 6:16 LSB - [16] Then the king said [the word], and Daniel was brought in and cast into the lions' den. The king answered and said to Daniel, "Your God whom you constantly serve will Himself save you."

Dan 6:21-22 LSB -
[21] Then Daniel spoke to the king, "O king, live forever!
[22] "My God sent His angel and shut the lions' mouths, and they have not harmed me, inasmuch as I was found innocent before Him; and also toward you, O king, I have done no harm."

Daniel 1-3 We Will Not Serve Your Gods

Daniel Brought to Babylon

Dan 1:6-7 LSB -
[6] Now among them from the sons of Judah were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah
[7] Then the commander of the officials set names for them; and for Daniel he set [the name] Belteshazzar, for Hananiah Shadrach, for Mishael Meshach, and for Azariah Abed-nego.

Daniel’s Heart

Dan 1:8 LSB - [8] But Daniel set in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king's choice food or with the wine which he drank; so he sought [permission] from the commander of the officials that he might not defile himself.

Dan 1:17 LSB - [17] And as for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and insight in every [branch of] literature and wisdom; Daniel even understood all [kinds of] visions and dreams.

Nebuchadnezzar’s Troubling Dream

God Reveals Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream

Dan 2:17-18 LSB -
[17] Then Daniel went to his house and made the matter known to his friends, to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
[18] so that they might seek compassion from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that Daniel and his friends would not be destroyed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

Dan 2:20-23 LSB -
[20] Daniel answered and said, "Let the name of God be blessed forever and ever, For wisdom and might belong to Him.
[21] "And He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and establishes kings; He gives wisdom to wise men And knowledge to men of understanding.
[22] "He reveals the deep and hidden things; He knows what is in the darkness, And the light dwells with Him.
[23] "To You, O God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise, For You have given me wisdom and might; Even now You have made known to me what we sought from You, For You have made known to us the king's matter."

Daniel Interprets the Dream

Dan 2:44 LSB - [44] "And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will cause a kingdom to rise up which will never be destroyed, and [that] kingdom will not be left for another people; it will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, but it will itself stand forever.

Daniel and Friends Promoted

Dan 2:47 LSB - [47] The king answered Daniel and said, "Truly your God is a God of gods and a Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries since you have been able to reveal this mystery."

Nebuchadnezzar’s Golden Image

We Will Not Serve Your Gods

Dan 3:16-18 LSB -
[16] Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego answered and said to the king, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to respond to you [with] an answer concerning this matter.
[17] "If it be [so], our God whom we serve is able to save us from the furnace of blazing fire; and He will save us out of your hand, O king.
[18] "But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we are not going to serve your gods, and we will not worship the golden image that you have set up."

Daniel’s Friends Delivered

Dan 3:28-29 LSB -
[28] Nebuchadnezzar answered and said, "Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, who has sent His angel and saved His servants who put their trust in Him, violating the king's word, and gave up their bodies so as not to serve and not to worship any god except their own God.
[29] "Therefore I make a decree that any people, nation, or tongue that says anything offensive against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego shall be torn limb from limb and their houses reduced to a rubbish heap, inasmuch as there is no other god who is able to deliver in this way."

James 1-5 Faith without Works Is Dead

Testing Your Faith

Jas 1:1 LSB -
[1] James, a slave of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,
To the twelve tribes who are in the Dispersion: Greetings.

Jas 1:5-6 LSB -
[5] But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
[6] But he must ask in faith, doubting nothing, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind.

Jas 1:18 LSB -
[18] In the exercise of His will He brought us forth by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits among His creatures.

Doers of the Word

Jas 1:19 LSB - [19] Know [this], my beloved brothers. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak [and] slow to anger;

Jas 1:27 LSB - [27] Pure and undefiled religion before [our] God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, [and] to keep oneself unstained by the world.

The Sin of Favoritism

Jas 2:5 LSB - [5] Listen, my beloved brothers: did not God choose the poor of this world [to be] rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?

Jas 2:8 LSB - [8] If, however, you are fulfilling the royal law according to the Scripture, "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF," you are doing well.

Jas 2:10-11 LSB -
[10] For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one [point], he has become guilty of all.
[11] For He who said, "DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY," also said, "DO NOT MURDER." Now if you do not commit adultery, but murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.

Faith and Works

Jas 2:15-17 LSB -
[15] If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food,
[16] and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and be filled," and yet you do not give them what is necessary for [their] body, what use is that?
[17] Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead by itself.

Jas 2:26 LSB - [26] For just as the body without [the] spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.

The Tongue Is a Fire

Jas 3:8-10 LSB -
[8] But no one can tame the tongue; [it is] a restless evil [and] full of deadly poison.
[9] With it we bless [our] Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God.
[10] From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.

Wisdom from Above

Jas 3:17 LSB - [17] But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruits, without doubting, without hypocrisy.

Draw Near to God

Jas 4:5 LSB - [5] Or do you think that the Scripture speaks to no purpose: "He jealously desires the Spirit which He has made to dwell in us"?

Jas 4:10 LSB - [10] Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.

Life Is a Vapor

Jas 4:15 LSB - [15] Instead, you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that."

Miseries of the Rich

Patience and Perseverance

Jas 5:11 LSB - [11] Behold, we count those blessed who persevere. You have heard of the perseverance of Job and have seen the outcome of the Lord's dealings, that the Lord is full of compassion and [is] merciful.

Jas 5:13 LSB - [13] Is anyone among you suffering? [Then] he must pray. Is anyone cheerful? He is to sing praises.

Jas 5:14-16 LSB -
[14] Is anyone among you sick? [Then] he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.
[15] And the prayer offered in faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him.
[16] Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.

Ezekiel 46-48 Yahweh is there

The Prince, Feast, and Offerings

Eze 46:1 LSB - [1] 'Thus says Lord Yahweh, "The gate of the inner court facing east shall be shut the six working days; but it shall be opened on the sabbath day and opened on the day of the new moon.

Eze 46:9 LSB - [9] "But when the people of the land come before Yahweh at the appointed times, he who enters by way of the north gate to worship shall go out by way of the south gate. And he who enters by way of the south gate shall go out by way of the north gate. No one shall return by way of the gate by which he entered but shall go straight out.

The Boiling Places

Eze 46:20 LSB - [20] Then he said to me, "This is the place where the priests shall boil the guilt offering and the sin offering [and] where they shall bake the grain offering, in order that they may not bring [them] out into the outer court to transmit holiness to the people."

The River of Yahweh’s House

Eze 47:1 LSB - [1] Then he brought me back to the door of the house; and behold, water was flowing from under the threshold of the house toward the east, for the house faced east. And the water was flowing down from under, from the right side of the house, from south of the altar.

Eze 47:5 LSB - [5] Again he measured one thousand; [and it was] a river that I could not pass through, for the water had become high--[enough] water to swim in, a river that could not be passed through.

Eze 47:10 LSB - [10] "And it will be that fishermen will stand beside it; from Engedi to Eneglaim there will be a place for the spreading of nets. Their fish will be according to their kinds, like the fish of the Great Sea, very many.

Eze 47:12 LSB - [12] "And by the river on its bank, on one side and on the other, will grow all [kinds of] trees for food. Their leaves will not wither, and their fruit will not fail. They will bear every month because their water flows out from the sanctuary, and their fruit will be for food and their leaves for healing."

Apportionment of the Land

Eze 47:20 LSB - [20] "And the west side [shall be] the Great Sea, from the [south] border to a point opposite Lebo-hamath. This is the west side.

Eze 47:23 LSB - [23] "And it will be that in the tribe with which the sojourner sojourns, there you shall give [him] his inheritance," declares Lord Yahweh.

Yahweh Is There

Eze 48:35 LSB - [35] "[The city shall be] 18,000 [cubits] round about; and the name of the city from [that] day [shall be], 'Yahweh is there.'"

Rev 22:1-3 LSB -
[1] Then he showed me a river of the water of life, bright as crystal, coming from the throne of God and of the Lamb,
[2] in the middle of its street. On either side of the river was the tree of life, bearing twelve [kinds of] fruit, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations
[3] And there will no longer be any curse; and the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and His slaves will serve Him;

Ezekiel 43-45 - Yahweh’s Glory Returns to the Temple

Yahweh’s Glory Returns to the Temple

Eze 43:2-3 LSB -
[2] and behold, the glory of the God of Israel was coming from the way of the east. And His voice was like the sound of many waters; and the earth shone with His glory.

[3] "As for the prince, he shall sit in it as prince to eat bread before Yahweh; he shall enter by way of the porch of the gate and shall go out by the same way."

The Levitical Responsibilities

Eze 44:15-16 LSB -
[15] "But the Levitical priests, the sons of Zadok, who kept the responsibility of My sanctuary when the sons of Israel went astray from Me, shall come near to Me to minister to Me; and they shall stand before Me to bring near to Me the fat and the blood," declares Lord Yahweh.
[16] "They shall enter My sanctuary; they shall come near to My table to minister to Me and keep the responsibility [given by] Me.

[22] and I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel; and one king will be king for all of them; and they will no longer be two nations and no longer be divided into two kingdoms.
[23] "They also will no longer defile themselves with their idols or with their detestable things or with any of their transgressions; but I will save them from all their [places of] habitation in which they have sinned, and I will cleanse them. And they will be My people, and I will be their God.

Yahweh Cuts a Covenant

Yahweh Will Shepherd His Flock

Eze 34:14-16 LSB -
[14] "I will shepherd them in a good pasture, and their grazing ground will be on the mountain heights of Israel. There they will lie down on good grazing ground and [be] shepherded in rich pasture on the mountains of Israel.

Ezekiel 31-33 Ezekiel, Israel’s Watchman

Eze 31:9 LSB - [9] 'I made it beautiful with the multitude of its foliage, And all the trees of Eden, which were in the garden of God, were jealous of it.

Yet you will be brought down with the trees of Eden to the earth beneath; you will lie in the midst of the uncircumcised, with those who were slain by the sword. So is Pharaoh and all his multitude!"' declares Lord Yahweh."

A Lament over Pharaoh and Egypt

Eze 32:21 LSB - [21] "The dominant among the mighty ones shall speak of him [and] his helpers from the midst of Sheol, 'They have gone down, they lie still, the uncircumcised, slain by the sword.'

Ezekiel, Israel’s Watchman

Heb 13:17 LSB - [17] Obey your leaders and submit [to them]--for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account--so that they will do this with joy and not with groaning, for this would be unprofitable for you.

Eze 33:18-19 LSB -
[18] "When the righteous turns from his righteousness and does iniquity, then he shall die in it.
[19] "But when the wicked turns from his wickedness and does justice and righteousness, he will live by them.

2Pe 2:20-22 LSB -
[20] For if they are overcome, having [both] escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and having again been entangled in them, [then] the last state has become worse for them than the first.
[21] For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn away from the holy commandment handed on to them.
[22] The [message] of the true proverb has happened to them, "A DOG RETURNS TO ITS OWN VOMIT," and, "A sow, after washing, [returns] to wallowing in the mire."

Jerusalem Has Been Struck Down

Eze 33:30-33 LSB -
[30] "But as for you, son of man, the sons of your people who talk about you by the walls and in the doorways of the houses, speak to one another, each to his brother, saying, 'Come now and hear what the word is which comes forth from Yahweh.'
[31] "They come to you as people come and sit before you [as] My people and hear your words, but they do not do them, for they do the lustful desires [expressed] by their mouth, [and] their heart goes after their greedy gain.
[32] "Behold, you are to them like a lustful song by one who has a beautiful voice and plays well on an instrument; for they hear your words but they do not do them.
[33] "So when it comes to pass--behold, it is coming--then they will know that a prophet has been in their midst."

[10] "I also clothed you with embroidered cloth and put sandals of porpoise skin on your feet; and I wrapped you with fine linen and covered you with silk.
[11] "I also adorned you with ornaments and put bracelets on your hands and a necklace around your neck.
[12] "I also put a ring in your nose, earrings in your ears, and a splendid crown on your head.

[63] so that you may remember and be ashamed and never open your mouth anymore because of your dishonor, when I have atoned for you for all that you have done," declares Lord Yahweh.

Parable of Two Eagles and a Vine

ESV Global Study Bible: Footnotes for Ezekiel 17
Ezek. 17:11–18 The first part identifies the characters of the fable (vv. 11–15) before spelling out the moral of the story (vv. 16–18). The first eagle is the king of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar, who takes her king, that is, Judah’s king Jehoiachin (the “twig”), to Babylon (v. 12). The royal offspring (the “seed”) is Zedekiah (v. 13). Zedekiah’s failure was to break his covenant with Nebuchadnezzar (vv. 13–14) by turning to Egypt (v. 15), whose king was Hophra, the lesser eagle. Ultimately, hope in Egyptian aid will prove useless (v. 17; see Jer. 37:6–10). Breaking this political covenant will bring disaster on Zedekiah and his people (Ezek. 17:18).

The King Shall Die in Babylon

The Soul Who Sins Will Die

Eze 18:20 LSB - [20] "The soul who sins will die. The son will not bear the iniquity of the father, nor will the father bear the iniquity of the son; the righteousness of the righteous will be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked will be upon himself.

Eze 18:31 LSB - [31] "Cast away from yourselves all your transgressions which you have committed and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Now why will you die, O house of Israel?

[3] 'Thus says Lord Yahweh, "Woe to the wickedly foolish prophets who are walking after their own spirit and have seen nothing.

Eze 13:20-21 LSB -
[20] Therefore, thus says Lord Yahweh, "Behold, I am against your [magic] bands by which you hunt souls there as birds, and I will tear them from your arms; and I will let [their] souls go, [the very] souls whom you hunt as birds.
[21] "I will also tear off your veils and deliver My people from your hands, and they will no longer be in your hands to be hunted; and you will know that I am Yahweh.

[8] "I will set My face against that man and make him a sign and a proverb, and I will cut him off from among My people. So you will know that I am Yahweh.

Eze 14:11 LSB - [11] in order that the house of Israel may no longer wander from Me and no longer defile themselves with all their transgressions. Thus they will be My people, and I shall be their God,"' declares Lord Yahweh."

[13] "Son of man, if a country sins against Me by committing unfaithfulness, and I stretch out My hand against it, break its staff of bread, send famine against it, and cut off from it both man and beast,

Is Jerusalem Useful for Anything?

Eze 15:5-6 LSB - [5] "Behold, while it is intact, it is not made into anything. How much less, when the fire has consumed it and it is charred, can it still be made into anything! [6] "Therefore, thus says Lord Yahweh, 'As the wood of the vine among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel, so have I given up the inhabitants of Jerusalem;

Eze 11:16 LSB - [16] "Therefore say, 'Thus says Lord Yahweh, "Though I had removed them far away among the nations, and though I had scattered them among the countries, yet I was a sanctuary for them a little while in the countries where they had gone."'

Eze 11:19-20 LSB -
[19] "And I will give them one heart and give within them a new spirit. And I will take the heart of stone out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh,
[20] that they may walk in My statutes and keep My judgments and do them. Then they will be My people, and I shall be their God.

The Glory of Yahweh Leaves Jerusalem

The Vision of Captivity

Eze 12:27-28 LSB -
[27] "Son of man, behold, the house of Israel is saying, 'The vision that he beholds is for many years [from now], and he prophesies of times far off.'

Ezekiel 7-9

The Pitiless Wrath of Yahweh

Eze 7:2 LSB - [2] "Now as for you, son of man, thus says Lord Yahweh to the land 'ăḏāmâ of Israel, 'An end! The end is coming on the four corners of the earth. 'ereṣ

Eze 7:19 LSB - [19] 'They will throw their silver into the streets, and their gold will become an impure thing; their silver and their gold will not be able to deliver them in the day of the fury of Yahweh. They cannot satisfy their soul, nor can they fill their stomachs, for their iniquity has become an occasion of stumbling.

The Temple Profaned

Eze 7:27 LSB - [27] 'The king will mourn, the prince will be clothed with desolation, and the hands of the people of the land will be dismayed. According to their way I will deal with them, and by their judgments I will judge them. And they will know that I am Yahweh.'"

Visions of Abominations in the Sanctuary

Eze 8:3 LSB - [3] He sent forth the form of a hand and took me by a lock of my head; and the Spirit lifted me up between earth and heaven and brought me in the visions of God to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the north gate of the inner [court], where the seat of the figure of jealousy, which provokes to jealousy, was [located].

Exo 34:14 LSB - [14] --for you shall not worship any other god, for Yahweh, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God--

Deu 32:16 LSB - [16] "They made Him jealous with strange [gods]; With abominations they provoked Him to anger.

1Co 10:20-22 LSB -
[20] [No], but [I say] that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they SACRIFICE TO DEMONS AND NOT TO GOD. And I do not want you to become sharers in demons.
[21] You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.
[22] Or do we PROVOKE THE LORD TO JEALOUSY? Are we stronger than He?

Eze 8:5 LSB - [5] Then He said to me, "Son of man, raise your eyes now toward the north." So I raised my eyes toward the north, and behold, to the north of the altar gate [was] this figure of jealousy at the entrance.

Eze 8:10-11 LSB -
[10] So I entered and looked, and behold, every form of creeping things and beasts [and] detestable things, with all the idols of the house of Israel, were carved on the wall all around.
[11] Standing in front of them were seventy elders of the house of Israel, with Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan standing among them, each man with his censer in his hand and the fragrance of the cloud of incense rising.

2Ki 22:8 LSB - [8] Then Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe, "I have found the book of the law in the house of Yahweh." And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan and he read it.

Jer 26:24 LSB - [24] But the hand of Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah, so that he was not given into the hands of the people to put him to death.

Eze 8:14 LSB - [14] Then He brought me to the entrance of the gate of the house of Yahweh which [was] toward the north; and behold, women were sitting there weeping for Tammuz.

Ezek. 8:14–15 Moving farther north, Ezekiel sees women weeping for Tammuz. This ancient Mesopotamian cult celebrated the shepherd-king and god of vegetation. Mourning rites among women in this cult are recorded in extrabiblical sources.

Eze 8:16 LSB - [16] Then He brought me into the inner court of the house of Yahweh. And behold, at the entrance to the temple of Yahweh, between the porch and the altar, [were] about twenty-five men with their backs to the temple of Yahweh and their faces toward the east; and they were prostrating themselves eastward toward the sun.

The Vision of Yahweh’s Wrath

Eze 9:4, 6 LSB - [4] Yahweh said to him, "Go through the midst of the city, [even] through the midst of Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and groan over all the abominations which are being done in its midst." ...
[6] "Kill to [utter] destruction old men, chosen men, virgins, little ones, and women, but do not touch any man on whom is the mark; and you shall start from My sanctuary." So they started with the elders who [were] before the house.

Ezekiel 4-6

Ezekiel Bears Israel’s Iniquity

[5] "Now I have set a number of days for you corresponding to the years of their iniquity, 390 days; thus you shall bear the iniquity of the house of Israel
[6] "And you shall complete these, and you shall lie down a second time, [but] on your right side and bear the iniquity of the house of Judah; I have set it for you for forty days, a day for each year.

Making Unclean Bread

Eze 4:14 LSB - [14] But I said, "Ah, Lord Yahweh! Behold, I have never been defiled; for from my youth until now I have never eaten what died of itself or was torn by beasts, nor has any offensive meat ever entered my mouth."

Act 10:14 LSB - [14] But Peter said, "By no means, Lord, for I have never eaten anything defiled and unclean."

Eze 4:16 LSB - [16] Moreover, He said to me, "Son of man, behold, I am going to break the staff of bread in Jerusalem, and they will eat bread by weight and with anxiety, and they will drink water by measure and in desolation

Psa 105:16 LSB - [16] And He called for a famine upon the land; He broke the whole staff of bread.

The Siege of Jerusalem

Eze 5:10 LSB - [10] 'Therefore, fathers will eat [their] sons among you, and sons will eat their fathers; for I will execute judgments on you and scatter all your remnant to every wind.

Deu 28:53 LSB - [53] "Then you shall eat the offspring of your own body, the flesh of your sons and of your daughters whom Yahweh your God has given you, during the siege and the distress by which your enemy will oppress you.

Yahweh Will Destroy Israel’s Pagan Altars

[8] "However, I will leave a remnant, for you will have those who escaped the sword among the nations when you are scattered among the lands.
[9] "Then those of you who escape will remember Me among the nations to which they will be carried captive, how I have been broken over their adulterous hearts which turned away from Me, and by their eyes which played the harlot after their idols; and they will loathe themselves to their own faces for the evils which they have done, for all their abominations.
[10] "Then they will know that I am Yahweh; I have not said in vain that I would do this [calamitous] evil against them."'
