Acts 13-15

Barnabas and Saul Sent from Antioch by the Holy Spirit

[Act 13:1-3 LSB]
[1] Now there were at Antioch, in the church that was [there], prophets and teachers: Barnabas, and Simeon who was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul
[2] And while they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them."
[3] Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.

On Cyprus

[Act 13:4-5 LSB]
[4] So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia and from there they sailed to Cyprus. [5] And when they reached Salamis, they [began to] proclaim the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews, and they also had John as their helper.

In Pisidian Antioch

[Act 13:42-43 LSB]
[42] And as Paul and Barnabas were leaving, the people kept pleading that these words might be spoken to them the next Sabbath.
[43] Now when [the meeting of] the synagogue had broken up, many of the Jews and of the God-fearing proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, were urging them to continue in the grace of God.

Many Gentiles Believe

[Act 13:44-45 LSB]
[44] And the next Sabbath, nearly the whole city assembled to hear the word of the Lord.
[45] But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and [began] contradicting the things spoken by Paul, blaspheming.

[Act 13:46-48 LSB]
[46] Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, "It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first. Since you reject it and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles.
[47] "For so the Lord has commanded us, 'I HAVE PLACED YOU AS A LIGHT FOR THE GENTILES, THAT YOU MAY BRING SALVATION TO THE END OF THE EARTH.'"
[48] And when the Gentiles heard this, they [began] rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed.

[Isa 49:6 LSB]
[6] He says, "It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant To raise up the tribes of Jacob and to cause the preserved ones of Israel to return; I will also give You as a light of the nations So that My salvation may reach to the end of the earth."

[Act 4:27-28 LSB]
[27] "For truly in this city there were gathered together against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel,
[28] to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose predestined to occur.

[Rom 8:29-30 LSB]
[29] Because those whom He foreknew, He also predestined [to become] conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brothers;
[30] and those whom He predestined, He also called; and those whom He called, He also justified; and those whom He justified, He also glorified.

[Jhn 17:2 LSB]
[2] even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life.

In Iconium

[Act 14:3 LSB]
[3] Therefore they spent a long time [there] speaking boldly [with reliance] upon the Lord, who was testifying to the word of His grace, granting that signs and wonders be done through their hands.

In Lystra and Derbe

[Act 14:19-20 LSB]
[19] But Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and after winning over the crowds and stoning Paul, they were dragging him out of the city, supposing him to be dead.
[20] But while the disciples stood around him, he rose up and entered the city. The next day he went away with Barnabas to Derbe.

[Act 14:21-22 LSB]
[21] And after they had proclaimed the gospel to that city and had made many disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch,
[22] strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and [saying], "Through many afflictions we must enter the kingdom of God."

[Act 14:23 LSB] [23] And when they had appointed elders for them in every church, having prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed.

The Return to Antioch

[Act 14:27 LSB]
[27] And when they had arrived and gathered the church together, they [began to] report all things that God had done with them and how He had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles.

The Jerusalem Council

[Act 15:11-12 LSB]
[11] "But we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as they also are."
[12] And all the multitude kept silent, and they were listening to Barnabas and Paul as they were relating what signs and wonders God had done through them among the Gentiles.

James Issues a Judgment

[Act 15:32 LSB]
[32] And both Judas and Silas, also being prophets themselves, encouraged and strengthened the brothers with a lengthy message.
