Romans 4-6 - Dead to Sin, Alive to God

Abraham Justified by Faith

Rom 4:3 LSB - [3] For what does the Scripture say? "ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS COUNTED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS."

Rom 4:10-12 LSB -
[10] How then was it counted? While he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while circumcised, but while uncircumcised;
[11] and he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while uncircumcised, so that he might be the father of all who believe without being circumcised, that righteousness might be counted to them,
[12] and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also follow in the steps of the faith of our father Abraham which he had while uncircumcised.

Rom 4:16-17 LSB -
[16] For this reason [it is] by faith, in order that [it may be] according to grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to all the seed, not only to those who are of the Law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all--
[17] as it is written, "A FATHER OF MANY NATIONS HAVE I MADE YOU"--in the presence of Him whom he believed, [even] God, who gives life to the dead and calls into being that which does not exist.

Results of Justification by Faith

Rom 5:1-5 LSB -
[1] Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
[2] through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we boast in hope of the glory of God.
[3] And not only this, but we also boast in our afflictions, knowing that affliction brings about perseverance
[4] and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope
[5] and hope does not put to shame, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Rom 5:8 LSB - [8] But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Rom 5:9 LSB - [9] Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath [of God] through Him.

The Gift of Righteousness in Christ

Rom 5:12-13 LSB - [12] Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned-- [13] for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law.

Rom 5:16 LSB - [16] And the gift is not like [that which came] through the one who sinned; for on the one hand the judgment [arose] from one [transgression] resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the gracious gift [arose] from many transgressions resulting in justification.

Jas 2:10 LSB - [10] For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one [point], he has become guilty of all.

Rom 5:17 LSB - [17] For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.

Rom 5:18-19 LSB -
[18] So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men.
[19] For as through the one man's disobedience the many were appointed sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be appointed righteous.

Dead to Sin, Alive to God

Rom 6:3 LSB - [3] Or do you not know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?

Rom 6:4 LSB - [4] Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

Rom 6:5-7 LSB -
[5] For if we have become united with [Him] in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be [in the likeness] of His resurrection
[6] knowing this, that our old man was crucified with [Him], in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin;
[7] for he who has died has been justified from sin.

Rom 6:8-10 LSB -
[8] Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him,
[9] knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him.
[10] For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all, but the life that He lives, He lives to God.

Slaves of Righteousness

Rom 6:22-23 LSB -
[22] But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you have your benefit, leading to sanctification, and the end, eternal life.
[23] For the wages of sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 1-3 - A Man Is Justified by Faith

The Gospel Exalted

Rom 1:3-4 LSB - [3] concerning His Son, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh, [4] who was designated as the Son of God in power, according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,

Rom 1:16-17 LSB - [16] For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. [17] For in it [the] righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "BUT THE RIGHTEOUS WILL LIVE BY FAITH."

God’s Wrath on Unrighteousness

Rom 1:18-20 LSB - [18] For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, [19] because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. [20] For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, both His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.

Rom 1:21 LSB - [21] For even though they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish heart was darkened.

Rom 1:28 LSB - [28] And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them over to an unfit mind, to do those things which are not proper,

Rom 1:32 LSB - [32] and although they know the righteous requirement of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice [them].

God’s Righteous Judgment

Rom 2:12 LSB - [12] For all who have sinned without the Law will also perish without the Law, and all who have sinned under the Law will be judged by the Law.

Rom 2:14-16 LSB - [14] For when Gentiles who do not have the Law naturally do the things of the Law, these, not having the Law, are a law to themselves, [15] in that they demonstrate the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them, [16] on the day when, according to my gospel, God will judge the secrets of men through Christ Jesus.

The Jew Is Judged by the Law

Rom 2:29 LSB - [29] But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God.

There Is None Righteous

Rom 3:9-11 ESV - [9] What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, [10] as it is written: "None is righteous, no, not one; [11] no one understands; no one seeks for God.

Rom 3:19-20 LSB - [19] Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are in the Law, so that every mouth may be shut and all the world may become accountable to God; [20] because by the works of the Law NO FLESH WILL BE JUSTIFIED IN HIS SIGHT, for through the Law [comes] the knowledge of sin.

The Righteousness of God through Faith

Rom 3:23-24 LSB - [23] for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, [24] being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;

Rom 3:27-28 LSB - [27] Where then is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith. [28] For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law.

Psalm 104-106 - Bless Yahweh, O my soul!

The Glory of Yahweh Endures Forever

Psa 104:1-2 LSB -
[1] Bless Yahweh, O my soul!
O Yahweh my God, You are very great;
You are clothed with splendor and majesty,
[2] Wrapping Yourself with light as with a cloak,
Stretching out the heavens like a [tent] curtain.

Psa 104:33-34 LSB -
[33] I will sing to Yahweh throughout my life;
I will sing praise to my God while I have [my] being.
[34] Let my musing be pleasing to Him;
As for me, I shall be glad in Yahweh.

Remember His Wondrous Deeds

Psa 105:1-5 LSB -
[1] Oh give thanks to Yahweh, call upon His name;
Make known His acts among the peoples.
[2] Sing to Him, sing praises to Him;
Muse on all His wondrous deeds.
[3] Boast in His holy name;
Let the heart of those who seek Yahweh be glad.
[4] Inquire of Yahweh and His strength;
Seek His face continually.
[5] Remember His wondrous deeds which He has done,
His miracles and the judgments uttered by His mouth,

Psa 105:40-42 LSB -
[40] They asked, and He brought quail,
And He satisfied them with the bread of heaven.
[41] He opened the rock and water flowed out;
It ran in the dry places [like] a river.
[42] For He remembered His holy word
[With] Abraham His servant;

Give Thanks to Yahweh, for He Is Good

Psa 106:1 LSB - [1] Praise Yah! Oh give thanks to Yahweh, for He is good;
For His lovingkindness endures forever.

Psa 106:6-8 LSB -
[6] We have sinned with our fathers,
We have committed iniquity, we have acted wickedly.
[7] Our fathers in Egypt did not consider Your wondrous deeds;
They did not remember Your abundant lovingkindnesses,
But they rebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea.
[8] Yet He saved them for the sake of His name,
That He might make His might known.

Psa 106:43-46 LSB -
[43] Many times He would deliver them;
But they were rebellious in their counsel,
And [so] they sank down in their iniquity.
[44] Nevertheless He looked upon their distress
When He heard their cry of lamentation;
[45] And He remembered for them His covenant,
And relented according to the abundance of His lovingkindness.
[46] He also made them [objects] of compassion
In the presence of all their captors.

Psalm 101-103 - Bless Yahweh, O My Soul

Consider the Way of the Blameless

Psa 101:1 LSB - [1] Of David. A Psalm.
I will sing of lovingkindness and justice,
To You, O Yahweh, I will sing praises.

Psa 101:3 LSB -
[3] I will set no vile thing before my eyes;
I hate the work of those who fall away;
It shall not cling to me.

Do Not Hide Your Face from Me

Psa 102:16-17 LSB - [16] For Yahweh has built up Zion;
He has appeared in His glory.
[17] He has turned toward the prayer of the destitute
And has not despised their prayer.

Psa 102:25-26 LSB - [25] "Of old You founded the earth,
And the heavens are the work of Your hands.
[26] "Even they will perish, but You will remain;
And all of them will wear out like a garment;
Like clothing You will change them and they will be changed.

Bless Yahweh, O My Soul

Psa 103:2-5 LSB - [2] Bless Yahweh, O my soul,
And forget none of His benefits;
[3] Who pardons all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases;
[4] Who redeems your life from the pit,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion;
[5] Who satisfies your years with good things,
[So that] your youth is renewed like the eagle.

Psa 103:8 LSB - [8] Yahweh is compassionate and gracious,
Slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness.

Psa 103:12 LSB - [12] As far as the east is from the west,
So far has He removed our transgressions from us.

Psa 103:13 LSB - [13] As a father has compassion on [his] children,
So Yahweh has compassion on those who fear Him.

Psalm 95-100 - Today, if you hear His voice

Let Us Kneel Before Yahweh Our Maker

Psa 95:1-2 LSB -
[1] Oh come, let us sing for joy to Yahweh,
Let us make a loud shout to the rock of our salvation.
[2] Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving,
Let us make a loud shout to Him with songs of praise.

Psa 95:6-9 LSB -
[6] Come, let us worship and bow down,
Let us kneel before Yahweh our Maker.
[7] For He is our God,
And we are the people of His pasture and the sheep of His hand.
Today, if you hear His voice,
[8] Do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah,
As in the day of Massah in the wilderness,
[9] "When your fathers tried Me,
They tested Me, though they had seen My work.

Ascribe to Yahweh Glory and Strength

Psa 96:1-3 LSB -
[1] Sing to Yahweh a new song;
Sing to Yahweh, all the earth.
[2] Sing to Yahweh, bless His name;
Proclaim good news of His salvation from day to day.
[3] Recount His glory among the nations,
His wondrous deeds among all the peoples.

Psa 96:13 LSB -
[13] Before Yahweh, for He is coming,
For He is coming to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness
And the peoples in His faithfulness.

Remember His Holy Name

Psa 97:6 LSB - [6] The heavens declare His righteousness, And all the peoples see His glory.

Psa 97:11-12 LSB -
[11] Light is sown for the righteous
And gladness for the upright in heart.
[12] Be glad in Yahweh, you righteous ones,
And give thanks for the remembrance of His holy [name].

Sing to Yahweh a New Song

Psa 98:2-3 LSB -
[2] Yahweh has made known His salvation; He has revealed His righteousness in the eyes of the nations. [3] He has remembered His lovingkindness and His faithfulness to the house of Israel; All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

Psa 98:9 LSB -
[9] Before Yahweh, for He is coming to judge the earth;
He will judge the world with righteousness
And the peoples with equity.

Holy Is Yahweh Our God

Psa 99:1 LSB - [1] Yahweh reigns, let the peoples tremble; He sits enthroned [above] the cherubim, let the earth quake!

Psa 99:5 LSB - [5] Exalt Yahweh our God
And worship at the footstool of His feet;
Holy is He.

Psa 99:6 LSB - [6] Moses and Aaron were among His priests,
And Samuel was among those who called on His name;
They would call upon Yahweh and He would answer them.

Serve Yahweh with Gladness

Psa 100:1-2 LSB - [1] A Psalm of Thanksgiving.
Make a loud shout to Yahweh, all the earth.
[2] Serve Yahweh with gladness; Come before Him with joyful songs.

Psalm 90-94 - the days of our life

From Everlasting to Everlasting, You Are God

Psa 90:1 LSB - [1] A Prayer of Moses, the man of God.
Lord, You have been our dwelling place from generation to generation.

Jhn 6:56 LSB - [56] "He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.

1Jo 4:16 LSB - [16] And we have come to know and have believed the love which God has in us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.

Psa 90:10 LSB - [10] As for the days of our life, they contain seventy years, Or if due to might, eighty years, Yet their pride is [but] labor and wickedness; For soon it is gone and we fly away.

Lindsey Graham, Republican Senator and Staunch Trump Ally, Dies at 71

Psa 90:14-15 ESV -
[14] Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. [15] Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, and for as many years as we have seen evil.

In the Shadow of the Almighty

Psa 91:1-2 LSB - [1] He who abides in the shelter of the Most High Will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. [2] I will say to Yahweh, "My refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust!"

Psa 91:7-9 LSB -
[7] A thousand may fall at your side And ten thousand at your right hand,
[But] it shall not approach you.
[8] You will only look on with your eyes
And see the recompense of the wicked.
[9] For you have made Yahweh--my refuge,
The Most High--your dwelling place.

How Great Are Your Works, O Yahweh

Psa 92:1-2 LSB - [1] A Psalm. A Song for the Sabbath day.
It is good to give thanks to Yahweh
And to sing praises to Your name, O Most High;
[2] To declare Your lovingkindness in the morning
And Your faithfulness by night,

Psa 92:12-15 LSB -
[12] The righteous man will flourish like the palm tree,
He will grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
[13] Planted in the house of Yahweh,
They will flourish in the courts of our God.
[14] They will still yield fruit in old age;
They shall be rich and fresh,
[15] To declare that Yahweh is upright;
[He is] my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.

Ecclesiastes 10-12 - Fear God and Keep His Commandments

The Folly of a Simpleminded Fool

Ecc 10:4 ESV - [4] If the anger of the ruler rises against you, do not leave your place, for calmness will lay great offenses to rest.

Ecc 10:20 LSB - [20] Furthermore, in your bedchamber do not curse a king, and in your sleeping rooms do not curse a rich man, for a bird of the sky will bring the sound and the winged creature will tell the matter.

Cast Your Bread on the Waters

Ecc 11:5 LSB - [5] Just as you do not know the path of the wind and how bones [are formed] in the womb of the pregnant woman, so you do not know the work of God who works all things.

Ecc 11:9 LSB - [9] Be glad, young man, during your childhood, and let your heart be merry during the days of young manhood. And walk in the ways of your heart and in the sights of your eyes. Yet know that God will bring you to judgment for all these things.

Ecc 11:10 LSB - [10] So, remove vexation from your heart and put away evil from your flesh because childhood and the prime of life are vanity.

Remember Your Creator in Your Youth

Ecc 12:1-4 LSB - [1] Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days happen and the years draw near in which you will say, "I have no delight in them";
[2] before the sun and the light, the moon and the stars are darkened, and clouds return after the rain;
[3] in the day that the watchmen of the house tremble, and valiant men bend down, the grinding ones stand idle because they are few, and those who look through windows grow dark;
[4] and the doors on the street are shut as the sound of the grinding mill is low, and one will arise at the sound of the bird, and all the daughters of song will sing softly.

Ecc 12:6-7 LSB -
[6] [Remember Him] before the silver cord is snapped and the golden bowl is crushed, the pitcher by the spring is broken and the wheel at the cistern is crushed;
[7] then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it.

Fear God and Keep His Commandments

Ecc 12:13-14 LSB - [13] The end of the matter, all [that] has been heard: fear God and keep His commandments, because this is [the end of the matter for] all mankind. [14] For God will bring every work to judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil.

Ecclesiastes 7-9 - Death Comes to All

The Contrast of Wisdom and Folly

Ecc 7:2 LSB - [2] Better to go to a house of mourning
Than to go to a house of feasting
Because that is the end of all mankind,
And the living puts [this] in his heart.

Ecc 7:16 LSB - [16] Do not be excessively righteous, and do not be overly wise. Why should you make yourself desolate?

Ecc 7:20 LSB - [20] Indeed, there is not a righteous man on earth who [continually] does good and who never sins.

Job 15:14 LSB - [14] "What is man, that he should be pure, Or he who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

Rom 3:23 LSB - [23] for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Ecc 7:29 ESV - [29] See, this alone I found, that God made man upright, but they have sought out many schemes.

Gen 6:5 LSB - [5] Then Yahweh saw that the evil of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

Keep the Command of the King

Ecc 8:1 LSB - [1] Who is like the wise man and who knows the interpretation of a matter? A man's wisdom illumines his face and causes his stern face to beam.

Ecc 8:15 LSB - [15] So I laud gladness, for there is nothing good for a man under the sun except to eat and to drink and to be merry, and this will join with him in his labor [throughout] the days of his life which God has given him under the sun.

Ecc 8:17 LSB - [17] and I saw every work of God, [I concluded] that man cannot find out the work which has been done under the sun. Even though man should seek laboriously, he will not find [it] out; and though the wise man should say, "I know," he cannot find [it] out.

Death Comes to All

Ecc 9:4 LSB - [4] For whoever is joined with all the living, there is confidence; surely a live dog is better than a dead lion.

Whatever Your Hand Finds to Do

Ecc 9:10 LSB - [10] Whatever your hand finds to do, do [it] with [all] your might; for there is no working or explaining or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol where you are going.

Ecc 9:12 LSB - [12] Moreover, man does not know his time: like fish seized in an evil net and birds seized in a trap, so the sons of men are ensnared at an evil time when it suddenly falls on them.

Ecclesiastes 4-6 - Do not be hasty with your mouth

Evil Under the Sun

Ecc 4:8 LSB - [8] There was a certain man without a second man, having neither a son nor a brother, yet there was no end to all his labor. Indeed, his eyes were not satisfied with riches--"And for whom am I laboring and depriving myself of good?" This too is vanity, and it is a grievous endeavor.

Ecc 4:11 LSB - [11] Furthermore, if two lie down together they keep warm, but how can one be warm [alone]?

Ecc 4:13 LSB - [13] A poor yet wise lad is better than an old and foolish king who no longer knows [how] to receive warning.

Fear God

Ecc 5:2 LSB - [2] Do not be hasty with your mouth or impulsive in your heart to bring up a matter in the presence of God. For God is in heaven but you are on the earth; therefore let your words be few.

Pro 10:19 LSB - [19] When there are many words, transgression is unavoidable, But he who holds back his lips has insight.

 Ecc 5:7 LSB - [7] For in many dreams and vanities are many words. Rather, fear God.

The Vanity of Riches

Ecc 5:12 LSB - [12] The sleep of the laboring man is sweet, whether he eats little or much; but the satisfaction of the rich man does not allow him to sleep.

Ecc 5:15 LSB - [15] As he had come naked from his mother's womb, so will he return as he came. He will carry nothing from the fruit of his labor that he can bring in his hand.

Ecc 5:18 LSB - [18] Here is what I have seen to be good, which is beautiful: to eat, to drink, and to see good in all one's labor in which he labors under the sun [during] the few days of his life which God has given him; for this is his portion.

The Vanity of Life

Ecc 6:7 LSB - [7] All a man's labor is for his mouth, and yet the soul is not fulfilled.

Ecc 6:10 LSB - [10] Whatever exists has already been named, and it is known what man is; and he cannot dispute with him who is stronger than he is.

Ecclesiastes 1-3 - Vanity under the Sun

All Is Vanity

Ecc 1:2 LSB - [2] "Vanity of vanities," says the Preacher, "Vanity of vanities! All is vanity."

Ecc 1:9 LSB - [9] That which has been is that which will be, And that which has been done is that which will be done. So there is nothing new under the sun.

Ecc 1:11 LSB - [11] There is no remembrance of earlier things; And also of the later things which will be, There will be for them no remembrance Among those who will come later [still].

The Vanity of Wisdom

Ecc 1:13 LSB - [13] And I gave my heart to seek and explore by wisdom concerning all that has been done under heaven. [It] is a grievous endeavor [which] God has given to the sons of men with which to occupy [themselves].

Ecc 1:14 LSB - [14] I have seen all the works which have been done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and striving after wind.

Ecc 1:18 LSB - [18] Because in much wisdom there is much vexation, and [whoever] increases knowledge increases pain.

The Vanity of Pleasure and Possessions

Ecc 2:1 ESV - [1] I said in my heart, "Come now, I will test you with pleasure; enjoy yourself." But behold, this also was vanity.

Ecc 2:11 LSB - [11] Thus I turned to all my works which my hands had done and the labor which I had labored to do, and behold, all was vanity and striving after wind, and there was no advantage under the sun.

The Vanity of Living Wisely

Ecc 2:15 LSB - [15] Then I said in my heart, "As is the fate of the fool, so will my fate be also. Why then have I been extremely wise?" So I said in my heart, "This too is vanity."

Ecc 2:16-17 LSB - [16] For there is no remembrance of the wise man along with the fool forever, inasmuch as [in] the coming days all will be forgotten. And how the wise man dies with the fool! [17] So I hated life, for the work which had been done under the sun was grievous to me; because everything is vanity and striving after wind.

The Vanity of Labor

Ecc 2:18 LSB - [18] Thus I hated all the fruit of my labor for which I had labored under the sun, for I must leave it to the man who will come after me.

Ecc 2:24-25 LSB - [24] There is nothing better for a man [than] to eat and drink and have his soul see good in his labor. This also I have seen that it is from the hand of God. [25] For who can eat and who can have enjoyment outside of Him?

Ecc 2:26 LSB - [26] For to a man who is good before Him, He has given wisdom and knowledge and gladness, while to the sinner He has given the endeavor of gathering and collecting so that he may give to one who is good before God. This too is vanity and striving after wind.

A Time for Everything

Ecc 3:1-2 LSB -
[1] There is an appointed time for everything.
And there is a time for every matter under heaven--
[2] A time to give birth and a time to die;
A time to plant and a time to uproot what is planted.

God Set Eternity in the Heart of Man

Ecc 3:11 LSB - [11] He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in their heart, yet so that man will not find out the work which God has done from the beginning even to the end.

Ecc 3:12-13 LSB - [12] I know that there is nothing better for them than to be glad and to do good in one's lifetime; [13] moreover, that every man who eats and drinks and sees good in all his labor--it is the gift of God.

Ecc 3:19-20 LSB - [19] For the fate of the sons of men and the fate of beasts is the same fate for [each of] them. As one dies so dies the other, and they all have the same breath. So there is no advantage for man over beast, for all is vanity. [20] All go to the same place. All came from the dust, and all return to the dust.

Ecc 3:21 LSB - [21] Who knows that the breath of man ascends upward and the breath of the beast descends downward to the earth?

Psalm 88-89 - What man can live and not see death?

Incline Your Ear to My Cry

Psa 88:1 LSB - [1] A Song. A Psalm of the sons of Korah. For the choir director. According to Mahalath Leannoth. A Maskil of Heman the Ezrahite.

O Yahweh, the God of my salvation,
I have cried out by day and throughout the night before You.

Psa 88:2 LSB - [2] Let my prayer come before You;
Incline Your ear to my cry of lamentation!

Psa 88:13 LSB - [13] But as for me, O Yahweh, I have cried out to You for help,
And in the morning my prayer comes before You.

Sing of the Lovingkindness of Yahweh Forever

Psa 89:1 LSB - [1] A Maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite.
I will sing of the lovingkindnesses of Yahweh forever;
From generation to generation I will make known Your faithfulness with my mouth.

Psa 89:14 ESV - [14] Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before you.

Psa 89:47-48 LSB - [47] Remember what my span of life is;
For what vanity You have created all the sons of men!
[48] What man can live and not see death?
Can he provide his soul escape from the power of Sheol? Selah.

Psalm 84-87 - To You, O Lord, I Lift Up My Soul

Blessed Is the Man Who Trusts in You

Psa 84:1 LSB - [1] For the choir director. According to the Gittith. Of the sons of Korah. A Psalm.
How lovely are Your dwelling places, O Yahweh of hosts!

Psa 84:10 LSB -
[10] For better is a day in Your courts than a thousand [elsewhere].
I would choose to stand at the threshold of the house of my God
Than dwell in the tents of wickedness.

Turn Us Back, O God

Psa 85:4 ESV - [4] Restore us again, O God of our salvation, and put away your indignation toward us!

Psa 85:9 LSB - [9] Surely His salvation is near to those who fear Him, That glory may dwell in our land.

To You, O Lord, I Lift Up My Soul

Psa 86:9 LSB -
[9] All nations whom You have made shall come and worship before You, O Lord,
And they shall glorify Your name.

Psa 86:11 LSB -
[11] Teach me Your way, O Yahweh;
I will walk in Your truth;
Unite my heart to fear Your name.

Glorious Things of You Are Spoken

Psa 87:2 LSB -
[2] Yahweh loves the gates of Zion
More than all the dwelling places of Jacob.

Psa 87:3 LSB -
[3] Glorious things are spoken of you,
O city of God. Selah.

Psa 87:4-6 LSB -
[4] "I shall mention Rahab and Babylon among those who know Me;
Behold, Philistia and Tyre with Ethiopia: 'This one was born there.'"
[5] But of Zion it shall be said,
"This one and that one were born in her";
And the Most High Himself will establish her.
[6] Yahweh will count when He registers the peoples,
"This one was born there." Selah.

Psalm 80-83

O God, Restore Us

Psa 80:1 LSB - [1] For the choir director. El Shoshannim. Eduth. Of Asaph. A Psalm.
O Shepherd of Israel, give ear,
You who guide Joseph like a flock;
You who are enthroned [above] the cherubim, shine forth!

Psa 80:3 LSB - [3] O God, restore us And cause Your face to shine [upon us], that we would be saved.

Oh That My People Would Listen to Me

Psa 81:5 LSB - [5] He established it for a testimony in Joseph When he went forth over the land of Egypt. I heard a language that I did not know:

Psa 81:8-10 LSB - [8] "Hear, O My people, and I will testify against you; O Israel, if you would listen to Me! [9] "Let there be no strange god among you; And you shall not worship a foreign god. [10] "I am Yahweh your God, Who brought you up from the land of Egypt; Open your mouth wide and I will fill it.

Psa 81:13 LSB - [13] "Oh that My people would listen to Me, That Israel would walk in My ways!

God Stands in Judgment

Psa 82:1 LSB - [1] A Psalm of Asaph.
God takes His stand in the congregation of God;
He judges in the midst of gods.

Psa 82:6-7 LSB -
[6] I said, "You are gods,
And all of you are sons of the Most High.
[7] "Nevertheless you will die like men
And you will fall like [any] one of the princes."

Jhn 10:34-36 LSB -
[34] Jesus answered them, "Has it not been written in your Law, 'I SAID, YOU ARE GODS'?
[35] "If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken),
[36] do you say of Him, whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, 'You are blaspheming,' because I said, 'I am the Son of God'?

O God, Do Not Be Quiet

Psa 83:1 LSB - [1] A Song. A Psalm of Asaph.
O God, do not remain at rest;
Do not be silent and, O God, do not be quiet.

Psa 83:18 LSB -
[18] That they may know that You alone--Your name is Yahweh--
Are the Most High over all the earth.

Psalm 77-79 - The Lord chose the tribe of Judah

In My Distress I Sought the Lord

Psa 77:4 LSB - [4] You have held my eyelids [open]; I am so troubled that I cannot speak.

Psa 77:9-10 LSB - [9] Has God forgotten to be gracious, Or has He in anger shut up His compassion? Selah. [10] Then I said, "It is my grief, That the right hand of the Most High has changed."

Psa 77:11-12 LSB - [11] I shall remember the deeds of Yah; Surely I will remember Your wonders of old. [12] I will meditate on all Your work And muse on Your deeds.

That the Generation to Come Might Know

Psa 78:5-8 LSB -
[5] For He established a testimony in Jacob And set a law in Israel, Which He commanded our fathers That they should teach them to their children,
[6] That the generation to come might know, [even] the children [yet] to be born, [That] they may arise and recount [them] to their children,
[7] That they should set their confidence in God And not forget the deeds of God, But observe His commandments,
[8] And not be like their fathers, A stubborn and rebellious generation, A generation that did not prepare its heart And whose spirit was not faithful to God.

Psa 78:65-68 LSB -
[65] Then the Lord awoke as [if from] sleep, As [if He were a] warrior overcome by wine.
[66] He struck His adversaries backward; He put on them an everlasting reproach.
[67] He also rejected the tent of Joseph, And did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,
[68] But chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion which He loved.

How Long, O Yahweh?

Psa 79:4-5 LSB - [4] We have become a reproach to our neighbors, A mockery and derision to those around us. [5] How long, O Yahweh? Will You be angry forever? Will Your jealousy burn like fire?

Psa 79:12-13 LSB - [12] And return to our neighbors sevenfold into their bosom The reproach with which they have reproached You, O Lord. [13] But as for us, as Your people and the sheep of Your pasture, We will give thanks to You forever; From generation to generation we will recount Your praise.

Psalm 73-76 - Your name is near

God Is My Strength and Portion Forever

Psa 73:1 LSB - [1] A Psalm of Asaph. Surely God is good to Israel, To those who are pure in heart!

Rom 2:28-29 LSB - [28] For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh. [29] But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God.

Psa 73:28 LSB - [28] But as for me, the nearness of God is my good; I have set Lord Yahweh as my refuge, That I may recount all Your works.

Arise, O God, Defend Your Cause

Psa 74:1 LSB - [1] A Maskil of Asaph.
Why, O God?
Have You rejected [us] forever?
Why does Your anger smoke against the sheep of Your pasture?

Psa 74:22 LSB - [22] Arise, O God, [and] plead Your own cause; Remember how the wicked fool reproaches You all day long.

God Judges with Equity

Psa 75:1 LSB - [1] For the choir director. Al-tashheth. A Psalm of Asaph. A Song.
We give thanks to You, O God, we give thanks,
For Your name is near;
Men recount Your wondrous deeds.

God’s Name Is Great in Israel

Psa 76:1 LSB - [1] For the choir director. With stringed instruments. A Psalm of Asaph. A Song.
God is known in Judah;
His name is great in Israel.

Philemon 1 - Every Good Thing Which Is in You

Philemon’s Love and Faith

Phm 1:4-7 LSB -
[4] I thank my God, always making mention of you in my prayers,
[5] because I hear of your love and of the faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and toward all the saints;
[6] [and I pray] that the fellowship of your faith may become effective through the full knowledge of every good thing which is in you for the sake of Christ.

[7] For I have come to have much joy and comfort in your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, brother.

Phm 1:6 ESV - [6] and I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective for the full knowledge of every good thing that is in us for the sake of Christ.

Five Ways to Refresh the Saints in Your Life

Plea for Onesimus

Phm 1:12-14 LSB - [12] I have sent him back to you in person, that is, my very heart, [13] whom I intended to keep with me, so that on your behalf he might minister to me in my chains for the gospel, [14] but without your consent I did not want to do anything, so that your goodness would not be, in effect, by compulsion but voluntary.

Proverbss 28-31 - Two things I asked of You

Instructions and Warnings

Pro 28:13 LSB - [13] He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, But he who confesses and forsakes [them] will receive compassion.

Pro 28:14 ESV - [14] Blessed is the one who fears the LORD always, but whoever hardens his heart will fall into calamity.

Pro 28:19 LSB - [19] He who cultivates his ground will be satisfied with food, But he who pursues empty [things] will be satisfied with poverty.

Pro 28:24 LSB - [24] He who robs his father or his mother And says, "It is not a transgression," Is the companion of a man who destroys.

Mat 15:4-6 LSB - [4] "For God said, 'HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER,' and, 'HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH.' [5] "But you say, 'Whoever says to [his] father or mother, "Whatever you might benefit from me is given [to God]," [6] he need not honor his father.' And [by this] you invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition.

Pro 28:26 LSB - [26] He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, But he who walks wisely will escape.

Pro 28:27 LSB - [27] He who gives to the poor will never want, But he who shuts his eyes will have many curses.

Pro 29:15 LSB - [15] The rod and reproof give wisdom, But a child left [to himself] brings shame to his mother.

Pro 29:25 LSB - [25] Trembling before man brings a snare, But he who trusts in Yahweh will be set securely on high.

Every Word of God Is Tested

Pro 30:4 LSB -
[4] Who has ascended into heaven and descended?
Who has gathered the wind in His fists?
Who has wrapped the waters in His garment?
Who has established all the ends of the earth?
What is His name?
And what is His Son's name?
Surely you know!

Pro 30:7-9 LSB -
[7] Two things I asked of You,
Do not withhold from me before I die:
[8] Keep worthlessness and [every] false word far from me,
Give me neither poverty nor riches;
Feed me with the food that is my portion,
[9] Lest I be full and deny [You] and say, "Who is Yahweh?"
Or lest I be impoverished and steal,
And profane the name of my God.

Psa 27:4 LSB - [4] One thing I have asked from Yahweh, that I shall seek:
That I may dwell in the house of Yahweh all the days of my life,
To behold the beauty of Yahweh And to inquire in His temple.

Thus Agur breathed his warm desire
8.8.8.8

 1 Thus Augur breath'd his warm desire:
"My God, two favors I require,
"In neither my request deny,
"Vouchsafe them both before I die.

2 "Far from my heart and tents exclude
"Those enemies to all that's good,
"Folly, whose pleasures end in death,
"And Falshood's pestilential breath,

3 "Be neither wealth nor want my lot.
"Below the dome, above the cot,
"Let me my life unanxious lead,
"And know not luxury nor need."

4 These wishes, Lord, we make our own
O shed in moderation down
Thy bounties, 'till this mortal breath,
Expiring, tunes thy praise in death!

5 But shouldst thou large possessions give,
May we with thankfulness receive
The exuberance—still our God adore,
And bless the needy from our store!

6 Or should we feel the pains of want,
Submission, resignation grant,
'Till thou shalt send the wish'd supply,
Or call us to the bliss on high.

Pro 30:32 LSB - [32] If you have been wickedly foolish in lifting yourself up, Or if you have schemed [evil], [put your] hand on your mouth.

A Mother’s Oracle

Pro 31:1 LSB - [1] The words of King Lemuel, the oracle [unto] which his mother disciplined him:

Pro 31:3 LSB - [3] Do not give your excellence to women, Or your ways to that which blots out kings.

A Woman Who Fears Yahweh

Pro 31:10-12 LSB -
[10] ALEPH An excellent wife, who can find? For her worth is far above pearls.
[11] BETH The heart of her husband trusts in her, And he will have no lack of gain.
[12] GIMEL She deals bountifully with him for good and not evil All the days of her life.

Pro 31:30 LSB -
[30] SHIN Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain,
[But] a woman who fears Yahweh, she shall be praised.

Proverbs 25-27 - Do not boast about tomorrow

Analogies of Wisdom

Pro 25:9 LSB - [9] Plead your case with your neighbor, And do not reveal the secret of another,

Pro 25:15 LSB - [15] When one is slow to anger, a ruler may be persuaded, And a soft tongue breaks the bone.

Pro 25:28 LSB - [28] [Like] a city that is broken into [and] without a wall Is a man without restraint over his spirit.

Pro 26:11 LSB - [11] Like a dog that returns to its vomit Is a fool who repeats his folly.

2Pe 2:20-22 ESV -
[20] For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first.
[21] For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them.
[22] What the true proverb says has happened to them: "The dog returns to its own vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire."

Pro 26:12 LSB - [12] Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.

Instructions and Warnings

Pro 27:1 LSB - [1] Do not boast about tomorrow, For you do not know what a day may bring forth.

Jas 4:13-15 LSB -
[13] Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit."
[14] Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.
[15] Instead, you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that."

Pro 22:9 LSB - [9] He who is generous will be blessed, For he gives from his food to the poor.

The Fear of Yahweh

Pro 23:13-14 LSB - [13] Do not withhold discipline from the child, Although you strike him with the rod, he will not die. [14] You shall strike him with the rod And deliver his soul from Sheol.

Pro 23:17 LSB - [17] Do not let your heart be jealous of sinners, But [be zealous] in the fear of Yahweh always.

My Son, Fear Yahweh

Pro 24:29 LSB - [29] Do not say, "As he did to me so I shall do to him; I will render to the man according to his work."

Rom 12:19 LSB - [19] never taking your own revenge, beloved--instead leave room for the wrath [of God]. For it is written, "VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY," says the Lord.

1Th 5:15 LSB - [15] See that no one repays another with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another and for all people.
