Numbers 16-18 - Aaron’s Rod Buds

Korah Rises Up Against Moses

Num 16:3 LSB - [3] Then they assembled together against Moses and Aaron, and said to them, "You have gone far enough, for all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and Yahweh is in their midst; so why do you exalt yourselves above the assembly of Yahweh?"

Num 16:8-10 LSB - [8] Then Moses said to Korah, "Hear now, you sons of Levi, [9] is it not enough for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the [rest of] the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to Himself, to perform the service of the tabernacle of Yahweh, and to stand before the congregation to minister to them; [10] and that He has brought you near, [Korah], and all your brothers, sons of Levi, with you? And are you seeking for the priesthood also?

Num 16:31-33 LSB - [31] And it happened that as he finished speaking all these words, the ground that was under them split open; [32] and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men who belonged to Korah with [their] possessions. [33] So they and all that belonged to them went down to Sheol alive; and the earth closed over them, and they perished from the midst of the assembly.

Num 16:35 LSB - [35] Fire also came forth from Yahweh and consumed the 250 men who were bringing near the incense.

Grumbling and Plague

Num 16:47-49 LSB - [47] Then Aaron took [it] as Moses had spoken, and ran into the midst of the assembly, for behold, the plague had begun among the people. So he put [on] the incense and made atonement for the people. [48] And he took his stand between the dead and the living, so that the plague was checked. [49] But those who died by the plague were 14,700, besides those who died on account of Korah.

Aaron’s Rod Buds

Num 17:8 LSB - [8] Now it happened on the next day Moses went into the tent of the testimony; and behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi had sprouted and put forth buds and produced flowers, and it bore ripe almonds.

Aaron's Rod

Author: George Richards

1 See Isr'el's tribes brought near to God;
And ev'ry prince present his rod:
Whilst one alone with blossoms blooms,
And sheds the almond's rich perfumes.

2 'Twas his, the type of him divine,
Whom thou, O Lord, hast chose as thine;
The man, the priest, the stem, the root,
Who bears for us immortal fruit.

3 Jesus, High Priest of good to come!
Thy rod, thy staff shall guide us home:
Thro' death's dark vale, we'll trust its pow'r,
Nor fear a shadow's shaded hour.

Responsibilities of the Levites

Num 18:6-7 LSB - [6] "And behold, I Myself have taken your brothers the Levites from among the sons of Israel; they are a gift to you, given to Yahweh, to perform the service for the tent of meeting. [7] "But you and your sons with you shall keep your priesthood in everything that concerns the altar and inside the veil, and you are to perform service. I am giving you the priesthood as a bestowed service, but the outsider who comes near shall be put to death."

The Priests’ Portion

Num 18:20 LSB - [20] Then Yahweh said to Aaron, "You shall have no inheritance in their land nor own any portion among them; I am your portion and your inheritance among the sons of Israel.

Num 18:24 LSB - [24] "For the tithe of the sons of Israel, which they raise up as a contribution offering to Yahweh, I have given to the Levites for an inheritance; therefore I have said concerning them, 'They shall have no inheritance among the sons of Israel.'"

Numbers 13-15 - We Are Surely Able

The Spies Sent into Canaan

Num 13:1-2 LSB - [1] Then Yahweh spoke to Moses saying, [2] "Send out for yourself men so that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I am going to give to the sons of Israel; you shall send a man from each of their fathers' tribes, every one a leader among them."

Num 13:22-23 LSB - [22] And they had gone up into the Negev and came to Hebron where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) [23] Then they came to the valley of Eshcol and from there cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes; and they carried it on a pole between two [men] with some of the pomegranates and the figs.

The Spies Recount What They Saw

Num 13:27 LSB - [27] Thus they recounted to him and said, "We went in to the land where you sent us; and it certainly does flow with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.

Num 13:30 LSB - [30] Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, "We should by all means go up and take possession of it, for we are surely able to overcome it."

Num 13:33 LSB - [33] "There also we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak are part of the Nephilim); and we became like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight."

We Are Well Able

Author: Mrs. Frederick W. Suffield

1. ’Twas the Lord of hosts that led us out of Egypt’s sand;
And He led us through the Red Sea by His mighty hand,
Never halting in the wilderness, but His command
Gave assurance we were able to possess the land.

Refrain
We are able to go up and take the country,
And possess the land from Jordan to the sea;
And, though giants tall be there our way to hinder,
God will surely give the victory.

2. When the spies brought back the message, this is what they said:
Against giants and walled cities, we cannot be led;
But a Caleb and a Joshua said, They’ll be as bread;
We are able to go up, possess the land ahead. [Refrain]

3. When we crossed the river Jordan, in the land we found:
Wine and oil and milk and honey, richest fruits abound;
Sparkling fountains, and the showers come upon the ground;
We are able, Hallelujah! Let God’s praise resound. [Refrain]

4. There’s no thirsting for old Egypt, since we’re in this way,
And we care not what the critics or the ten spies say;
For the land abounds in plenty, and we’re here to stay,
Won’t you come and join us, brother, enter in today? [Refrain]

The People Rebel

Num 14:4 LSB - [4] So they said to one another, "Let us appoint a leader and return to Egypt."

Num 14:6-9 LSB - [6] And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, of those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes; [7] and they spoke to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, saying, "The land which we passed through to spy out is an exceedingly good land. [8] "If Yahweh is pleased with us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us--a land which flows with milk and honey. [9] "But as for you, only do not rebel against Yahweh; and do not fear the people of the land, for they are our bread. Their protection has been removed from them, and Yahweh is with us; do not fear them."

Num 14:10 LSB - [10] But all the congregation said to stone them with stones. Then the glory of Yahweh appeared in the tent of meeting to all the sons of Israel.

Moses Prays for the People

Num 14:17-19 LSB - [17] "So now, I pray, let the power of the Lord be great, just as You have declared, [18] 'Yahweh is slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He will by no means clear [the guilty], visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth [generations].' [19] "Pardon, I pray, the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of Your lovingkindness, just as You also have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now."

Evil Complainers

Num 14:20-23 LSB - [20] So Yahweh said, "I have pardoned [them] according to your word; [21] but indeed, as I live, all the earth will be filled with the glory of Yahweh. [22] "Surely all the men who have seen My glory and My signs which I have done in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have put Me to the test these ten times and have not listened to My voice, [23] shall by no means see the land which I swore to their fathers, nor shall any of those who spurned Me see it.

Num 14:30-32 LSB - [30] 'Surely you shall not come into the land in which I swore to make you dwell, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun. [31] 'Your little ones, however, who you said would become plunder--I will bring them in, so that they will know the land which you have rejected. [32] 'But as for you, your corpses will fall in this wilderness.

Israel Struck Down

Num 14:44-45 LSB - [44] But they went up heedlessly to the ridge of the hill country; neither the ark of the covenant of Yahweh nor Moses moved from the camp. [45] Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down, and struck them and beat them down as far as Hormah.

Offerings When Entering Canaan

Num 15:2-3 LSB - [2] "Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, 'When you enter the land of your places of habitation, which I am going to give you, [3] then make an offering by fire to Yahweh, a burnt offering or a sacrifice to fulfill a special vow, or as a freewill offering or in your appointed times, to make a soothing aroma to Yahweh, from the herd or from the flock.

Statute for the Sojourner

Num 15:27-28 LSB - [27] 'Also if one person sins unintentionally, then he shall bring near a one year old female goat for a sin offering. [28] 'And the priest shall make atonement before Yahweh for the person who goes astray when he sins unintentionally, making atonement for him that he may be pardoned.

Num 15:30 LSB - [30] 'But the person who does [anything] with a high hand, whether he is native or a sojourner, that one is blaspheming Yahweh; and that person shall be cut off from among his people.

A Sabbath-breaker Put to Death

Num 15:38-41 LSB - [38] "Speak to the sons of Israel, and tell them that they shall make for themselves tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and that they shall put on the tassel of each corner a cord of blue. [39] "And it shall be a tassel for you to look at and remember all the commandments of Yahweh, so as to do them and not follow after your own heart and your own eyes, after which you played the harlot, [40] so that you may remember to do all My commandments and be holy to your God. [41] "I am Yahweh your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt to be your God; I am Yahweh your God."

Numbers 10-12 - With him I speak mouth to mouth

The Silver Trumpets

Num 10:2 LSB - [2] "Make yourself two trumpets of silver, of hammered work you shall make them; and you shall use them for summoning the congregation and for having the camps set out.

Israel Sets Out from Sinai

Num 10:11-12 LSB - [11] Now it happened in the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth of the month, [that] the cloud was lifted from over the tabernacle of the testimony; [12] and the sons of Israel set out on their journeys from the wilderness of Sinai. Then the cloud settled down in the wilderness of Paran.

Num 10:35-36 LSB - [35] Then it happened when the ark set out that Moses said, "Rise up, O Yahweh! And let Your enemies be scattered, And let those who hate You flee before You." [36] And when it came to rest, he said, "Return, O Yahweh, [To] the myriad thousands of Israel."

The People Complain

Num 11:7-9 LSB - [7] Now the manna was like coriander seed, and its appearance like that of bdellium. [8] The people would go about and gather [it] and grind [it] between two millstones or beat [it] in the mortar, and boil [it] in the pot and make cakes with it; and its taste was as the taste of cakes baked with oil. [9] And when the dew fell on the camp at night, the manna would fall with it.

Moses Complains

Num 11:13-14 LSB - [13] "Where am I to get meat to give to all this people? For they weep before me, saying, 'Give us meat that we may eat!' [14] "I alone am not able to carry all this people because it is too heavy for me.

The Spirit Rests upon the Elders

Num 11:21 LSB - [21] But Moses said, "The people, among whom I am, are 600,000 on foot; yet You have said, 'I will give them meat, so that they may eat for a whole month.'

Num 11:25 LSB - [25] Then Yahweh came down in the cloud and spoke to him; and He took of the Spirit who was upon him and placed [Him] upon the seventy elders. And when the Spirit rested upon them, they prophesied. But they did not do [it] again.

The Quail and the Plague

Num 11:31 LSB - [31] Now there went forth a wind from Yahweh, and it brought quail from the sea, and let [them] fall beside the camp, about a day's journey on this side and a day's journey on the other side, all around the camp and about two cubits over the surface of the ground.

Num 11:33 LSB - [33] While the meat was still between their teeth, before it was chewed, the anger of Yahweh was kindled against the people, and Yahweh struck the people with a very severe plague.

Miriam and Aaron Speak Against Moses

Num 12:1-2 LSB - [1] Then Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman whom he had taken [as a wife] (for he had taken a Cushite woman); [2] and they said, "Has Yahweh indeed spoken only through Moses? Has He not spoken through us as well?" And Yahweh heard it.

Num 12:6-8 LSB - [6] and He said, "Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you, I, Yahweh, shall make Myself known to him in a vision. I shall speak with him in a dream. [7] "Not so, with My servant Moses, He is faithful in all My household; [8] With him I speak mouth to mouth, Indeed clearly, and not in riddles, And he beholds the form of Yahweh. Why then were you not afraid To speak against My servant, against Moses?"

Numbers 7-9 - Whenever the Cloud Would Go Up from over the Tent

Offerings of the Leaders

Num 7:9 LSB - [9] But he did not give [any] to the sons of Kohath because theirs [was] the service of the holy [objects, which] they carried on the shoulder.

Num 7:89 LSB - [89] Now when Moses went into the tent of meeting to speak with Him, he heard the voice speaking to him from above the mercy seat that was on the ark of the testimony, from between the two cherubim, so He spoke to him.

The Seven Lamps

Cleansing of the Levites

Num 8:17-19 LSB - [17] "For every firstborn among the sons of Israel is Mine, among the men and among the animals; on the day that I struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I sanctified them for Myself. [18] "But I have taken the Levites instead of every firstborn among the sons of Israel. [19] "And I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron and to his sons from among the sons of Israel, to perform the service of the sons of Israel at the tent of meeting and to make atonement on behalf of the sons of Israel, so that there will be no plague among the sons of Israel by their coming near to the sanctuary."

Retirement of the Levites

Num 8:25-26 LSB - [25] "But at the age of fifty years they shall retire from [their] duty in the service and not serve anymore. [26] "They may, however, minister to their brothers in the tent of meeting in order to keep [up] their responsibility, but they [themselves] shall perform no service. Thus you shall deal with the Levites concerning their responsibilities."

The Passover

Num 9:8-9 LSB - [8] Moses therefore said to them, "Wait, and I will listen to what Yahweh will command concerning you." [9] Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

Num 9:13 LSB - [13] 'But the man who is clean and is not on a journey, and yet neglects to celebrate the Passover, that person shall then be cut off from his people, for he did not bring near the offering of Yahweh at its appointed time. That man will bear his sin.

The Cloud Covering the Tabernacle

Num 9:15-16 LSB - [15] Now on the day that the tabernacle was erected the cloud covered the tabernacle, the tent of the testimony, and in the evening it was like the appearance of fire over the tabernacle until morning. [16] So it was continuously; the cloud would cover it [by day], and the appearance of fire by night.

Num 9:17 LSB - [17] Now whenever the cloud would go up from over the tent, afterward the sons of Israel would then set out; and in the place where the cloud settled down, there the sons of Israel would camp.

Num 9:22 LSB - [22] Whether it was two days or a month or a year that the cloud lingered over the tabernacle, dwelling above it, the sons of Israel remained camped and did not set out; but when it was lifted, they did set out.

Lead on, O King Eternal, The day of march has come

Author: Ernest W. Shurtleff (1887)
1 Lead on, O King eternal,
the day of march has come;
henceforth in fields of conquest
your tents will be our home.
Through days of preparation
your grace has made us strong;
and now, O King eternal,
we lift our battle song.

2 Lead on, O King eternal,
till sin's fierce war shall cease,
and holiness shall whisper
the sweet amen of peace.
For not with swords' loud clashing
or roll of stirring drums
with deeds of love and mercy
the heavenly kingdom comes.

3 Lead on, O King eternal;
we follow, not with fears,
for gladness breaks like morning
where'er your face appears.
Your cross is lifted o'er us,
we journey in its light;
the crown awaits the conquest;
lead on, O God of might.

Numbers 4-6 - Yahweh bless you, and keep you

Duties of the Kohathites

Num 4:4 LSB - [4] "This is the service of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting, [concerning] the most holy things.

Num 4:19-20 LSB - [19] "But do this to them that they may live and not die when they approach the most holy [objects]: Aaron and his sons shall go in and set each of them to his service and to his load; [20] but they shall not go in to see the holy [objects] even for a moment, or they will die."

Duties of the Gershonites

Num 4:24 LSB - [24] "This is the service of the families of the Gershonites, in serving and in carrying:

Duties of the Merarites

Num 4:31-32 LSB - [31] "Now this is the responsibility of their loads, for all their service in the tent of meeting: the boards of the tabernacle and its bars and its pillars and its bases, [32] and the pillars around the court and their bases and their pegs and their cords, with all their equipment and with all their service; and you shall assign [each man] by name the items of the responsibility of his load.

Num 4:49 LSB - [49] According to the word of Yahweh by the hand of Moses, they were numbered, everyone by his serving or carrying; thus [these were] his numbered men, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses.

Unclean Sent Outside the Camp

Num 5:2 LSB - [2] "Command the sons of Israel that they send away from the camp every leper and everyone having a discharge and everyone who is unclean because of a [dead] person.

Restitution for Sins

Num 5:6-7 LSB - [6] "Speak to the sons of Israel, 'When a man or woman commits any of the sins of mankind, acting unfaithfully against Yahweh, and that person is guilty, [7] then he shall confess his sins which he has committed, and he shall make restitution in full for his wrong and add to it one-fifth of it and give [it] to him whom he has wronged.

The Statutes of Jealousy

Num 5:29-30 LSB - [29] 'This is the law of jealousy: when a wife, [being] under [the authority of] her husband, goes astray and defiles herself, [30] or when a spirit of jealousy comes over a man and he is jealous of his wife, he shall then make the woman stand before Yahweh, and the priest shall apply all this law to her.

The Nazirite Vow

Num 6:2-3 LSB - [2] "Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, 'When a man or woman makes a special vow, the vow of a Nazirite, to dedicate himself as a Nazirite to Yahweh, [3] he shall abstain as a Nazirite from wine and strong drink; he shall drink no vinegar, whether made from wine or strong drink, nor shall he drink any grape juice nor eat fresh or dried grapes.

Luk 1:15 LSB - [15] "For he will be great in the sight of the Lord; and HE WILL NOT DRINK ANY WINE OR STRONG DRINK, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit while yet in his mother's womb.

Yahweh Blesses the Sons of Israel
Num 6:22-27 LSB -

[22] Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
[23] "Speak to Aaron and to his sons, saying, 'Thus you shall bless the sons of Israel. You shall say to them:
[24] Yahweh bless you, and keep you;
[25] Yahweh make His face shine on you, And be gracious to you;
[26] Yahweh lift up His face on you, And give you peace.'
[27] "So they shall invoke My name on the sons of Israel, and I [then] will bless them."

Words & Music: Peter C. Lutkin (1858–1931)

The Lord lift His countenance upon you,
And give you peace, and give you peace;
The Lord make His face to shine upon you,

Numbers 1-3 - Priests and Levites

The Census of Israel’s Warriors

Num 1:2-3 LSB - [2] "Take a census of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, by their families, by their fathers' households, according to the number of names, every male, head by head [3] from twenty years old and upward, whoever [is able to] go out to war in Israel, you and Aaron shall number them by their armies.

Num 1:4-6 LSB - [4] "With you, moreover, there shall be a man of each tribe, each one head of his father's household. [5] "These then are the names of the men who shall stand with you: of Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur; [6] of Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai;

Jhn 10:3 LSB - [3] "To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

Num 1:16 LSB - [16] "These are they who were called [upon] by the congregation, the leaders of their fathers' tribes; they were the heads of divisions of Israel."

Num 1:45-46 LSB - [45] So all the numbered men of the sons of Israel by their fathers' households, from twenty years old and upward, whoever [was able to] go out to war in Israel, [46] even all the numbered men were 603,550.

Levites Not Numbered in the Census

Num 1:49 LSB - [49] "Only the tribe of Levi you shall not number, nor shall you take their census among the sons of Israel.

Israel Camped by Their Standards

Num 2:17 LSB - [17] "Then the tent of meeting shall set out [with] the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camps; just as they camp, so they shall set out, every man in his place by their standards.

Num 2:34 LSB - [34] Thus the sons of Israel did; according to all that Yahweh commanded Moses, so they camped by their standards, and so they set out, every one by his family according to his father's household.

Priests and Levites

Num 3:5-8 LSB - [5] Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, [6] "Bring the tribe of Levi near and have them stand before Aaron the priest, that they may minister to him. [7] "And they shall keep his responsibility and the responsibility for the whole congregation before the tent of meeting, to perform the service of the tabernacle. [8] "They shall also keep all the furnishings of the tent of meeting, along with the responsibility of the sons of Israel, to perform the service of the tabernacle.

Num 3:12-13 LSB - [12] "Now, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the sons of Israel instead of every firstborn, the first offspring of the womb among the sons of Israel. So the Levites shall be Mine. [13] "For all the firstborn are Mine; on the day that I struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I sanctified to Myself all the firstborn in Israel, from man to beast. They shall be Mine; I am Yahweh."

Num 3:14-15 LSB - [14] Then Yahweh spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying, [15] "Number the sons of Levi by their fathers' households, by their families; every male from a month old and upward you shall number."

Responsibilities of the Priests

Num 3:25-26 LSB - [25] Now the responsibility of the sons of Gershon in the tent of meeting [involved] the tabernacle and the tent, its covering, and the screen for the doorway of the tent of meeting, [26] and the hangings of the court, and the screen for the doorway of the court which is around the tabernacle and the altar, and its cords, according to all the service concerning them.

Num 3:31-32 LSB - [31] Now their responsibility [involved] the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, and the utensils of the sanctuary with which they minister, and the screen, and all the service concerning them; [32] and Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest [was] the chief of the leaders of Levi [and had] the oversight of those who keep the responsibility of the sanctuary.

Num 3:36-37 LSB - [36] Now the appointed responsibility of the sons of Merari [involved] the boards of the tabernacle, its bars, its pillars, its bases, all its equipment, and the service concerning them, [37] and the pillars around the court with their bases and their pegs and their cords.

Galatians 4-6 - Walk by the Spirit

Sonship in Christ

Gal 4:4-5 LSB - [4] But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, [5] so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.

Gal 4:6-7 LSB - [6] And because you are sons, God sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" [7] Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.

Gal 4:19 LSB - [19] My children, with whom I am again in labor until Christ is formed in you--

An Allegory of Two Covenants

Gal 4:19, 22-23 LSB - [19] My children, with whom I am again in labor until Christ is formed in you-- ... [22] For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the servant-woman and one by the free woman. [23] But the son by the servant-woman had been born according to the flesh, while the son by the free woman through the promise.

Gal 4:19, 30-31 LSB - [19] My children, with whom I am again in labor until Christ is formed in you-- ... [30] But what does the Scripture say? "CAST OUT THE SERVANT-WOMAN AND HER SON, FOR THE SON OF THE SERVANT-WOMAN SHALL NOT BE AN HEIR WITH THE SON OF THE FREE WOMAN." [31] So then, brothers, we are not children of a servant-woman, but of the free woman.

Christ Set Us Free

Gal 5:1 LSB - [1] It was for freedom that Christ set us free. Therefore, stand firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.

Gal 5:5 LSB - [5] For we through the Spirit, by faith, are eagerly waiting for the hope of righteousness.

Phl 3:9 LSB - [9] and be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own which is from [the] Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which [is] from God upon faith,

Walk by the Spirit

Gal 5:16 LSB - [16] But I say, walk by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.

Gal 5:17 LSB - [17] For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you do not do the things that you want.

John Newton 8.8.8.8.8.8

Strange and mysterious is my life,
What opposites I feel within!
A stable peace, a constant strife,
The rule of grace, the pow’r of sin:

Too often I am captive led,
Yet daily triumph in my Head.

I prize the privilege of prayer,
But o! what backwardness to pray!
Though on the LORD I cast my care,
I feel its burden every day:

I seek his will in all I do,
Yet find my own is working too.

I call the promises my own,
And prize them more than mines of gold;
Yet though their sweetness I have known,
They leave me unimpressed and cold

One hour upon the truth I feed,
The next I know not what I read.

I love the holy day of rest,
When Jesus meets his gathered saints;
Sweet day, of all the week the best!
For its return my spirit pants:

Yet often, through my unbelief,
It proves a day of guilt and grief.

While on my Savior I rely,
I know my foes shall loose their aim;
And therefore dare their pow’r defy,
Assured of conquest through his name:

But soon my confidence is slain,
And all my fears return again.

Thus different pow’rs within me strive,
And grace, and sin, by turns prevail;
I grieve, rejoice, decline, revive,
And vict’ry hangs in doubtful scale:

But JESUS has his promise passed,
That grace shall overcome at last.

Gal 5:18 LSB - [18] But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.

Gal 5:22-23 LSB - [22] But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, [23] gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Gal 5:24 LSB - [24] Now those who belong to Christ Jesus crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

Bear One Another’s Burdens

Gal 6:1-2 LSB - [1] Brothers, even if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, [each of you] looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted. [2] Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

Gal 6:14 LSB - [14] But may it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

Galatians 1-3 - Gospel of Christ

Greetings and Grace

Gal 1:1 LSB - [1] Paul, an apostle--not [sent] from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised Him from the dead--

Gal 1:3-4 LSB - [3] Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, [4] who gave Himself for our sins so that He might rescue us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,

Distorting the Gospel

Gal 1:8 LSB - [8] But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should proclaim to you a gospel contrary to the gospel we have proclaimed to you, let him be accursed!

Paul Called by God

Gal 1:11-12 LSB - [11] For I make known to you, brothers, that the gospel which I am proclaiming as good news is not according to man. [12] For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but [I received it] through a revelation of Jesus Christ.

Gal 1:15-16 LSB - [15] But when God, who had set me apart from my mother's womb and called me through His grace, was pleased [16] to reveal His Son in me so that I might proclaim Him as good news among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with flesh and blood,

Paul Accepted by the Apostles

Gal 2:7-9 LSB - [7] But on the contrary, seeing that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter [had been] to the circumcised [8] (for He who worked in Peter unto [his] apostleship to the circumcised worked in me also unto the Gentiles), [9] and recognizing the grace that had been given to me, James and Cephas and John, who were reputed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, so that we [might] [go] to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.

Paul Opposes Peter (Cephas)

Gal 2:16 LSB - [16] nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified.

Words: Julia H. Johnston

The Law is holy, just and good,
And each command we should obey;
For Moses wrote the very things
The Lord requires of us today.
But none have kept, with perfect heart,
The Ten Commands from Sinai heard,
For we are weak, and break the Law,
In daily thought and deed and word.

The Savior kept the perfect Law,
For us He bore the guilt of sin;
He died to pay the debt we owe,
He lives to make us pure within.
The Gospel is the blessÃ¨d news
Of pardon bought, at highest cost;
Redemption now is full and free,
And none who trust Him shall be lost.

Then justified by faith are we,
By grace and mercy from above;
And peace with God, thro’ Jesus Christ,
Is ours thro’ His redeeming love.
We long to be like Christ our Lord,
For be ye holy is His word;
We long to spread the glad good news
Which our rejoicing hearts have heard.

Gal 2:20 LSB - [20] "I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. And the [life] which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

The Righteous Shall Live by Faith

Gal 3:6-7 LSB - [6] Just as Abraham BELIEVED GOD AND IT WAS COUNTED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS, [7] so know that those who are of faith, those are sons of Abraham.

Gen 15:6 LSB - [6] Then he believed in Yahweh; and He counted it to him as righteousness.

Gal 3:13-14 LSB - [13] Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us--for it is written, "CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS ON A TREE"-- [14] in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

The Promise by Faith

Gal 3:24-25 LSB - [24] Therefore the Law has become our tutor unto Christ, so that we may be justified by faith. [25] But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.

Gal 3:26-28 LSB - [26] For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. [27] For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. [28] There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Leviticus 25-27 - The Year of Jubilee

The Sabbatical Year

Lev 25:3-4 LSB - [3] 'Six years you shall sow your field, and six years you shall prune your vineyard and gather in its produce, [4] but during the seventh year the land shall have a sabbath rest, a sabbath to Yahweh; you shall not sow your field nor prune your vineyard.

Lev 25:5-7 LSB - [5] 'What grows of its own accord from your harvest you shall not reap, and your grapes of untrimmed vines you shall not gather; the land shall have a sabbatical year. [6] 'And the sabbath [produce] of the land shall be for food; for you and your male and female slaves and your hired man and your foreign resident, those who sojourn with you. [7] 'Even your cattle and the beasts that are in your land shall have all its produce to eat.

The Year of Jubilee

Lev 25:10 LSB - [10] 'You shall thus set apart as holy the fiftieth year and proclaim a release through the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you, and each of you shall return to his own possession [of land], and each of you shall return to his family.

Lev 25:20-22 LSB - [20] 'But if you say, "What are we going to eat on the seventh year if we do not sow or gather in our produce?" [21] then I will command My blessing for you in the sixth year that it will bring forth the produce for three years. [22] 'So you shall sow the eighth year and eat old things from that produce, eating [the old] until the ninth year when its produce comes in.

Blow ye the trumpet, blow

Author: Charles Wesley (1750)

1 Blow ye the trumpet, blow!
The gladly solemn sound
let all the nations know,
to earth's remotest bound:

Refrain:
The year of jubilee is come!
The year of jubilee is come!
Return, ye ransomed sinners, home.

2 Jesus, our great high priest,
hath full atonement made;
ye weary spirits, rest;
ye mournful souls, be glad: [Refrain]

3 Extol the Lamb of God,
the all-atoning Lamb;
redemption in His blood
throughout the world proclaim: [Refrain]

4 Ye slaves of sin and hell,
your liberty receive,
and safe in Jesus dwell,
and blest in Jesus live: [Refrain]

5 Ye who have sold for nought
your heritage above
shall have it back unbought,
the gift of Jesus' love: [Refrain]

6 The gospel trumpet hear,
the news of heav'nly grace;
and saved from earth, appear
before your Savior's face: [Refrain]

The Redemption of Land

Lev 25:23 LSB - [23] 'The land, moreover, shall not be sold permanently, for the land is Mine; for you are [but] sojourners and foreign residents with Me.

Redemption Rights for Poor Brothers

Lev 25:35 LSB - [35] 'Now if a brother of yours becomes poor and his means with regard to you falter, then you are to sustain him, like a sojourner or a foreign resident, that he may live with you.

Redemption from a Sojourner

Lev 25:50 LSB - [50] 'He then with his purchaser shall calculate from the year when he sold himself to him up to the year of jubilee; and the price of his sale shall correspond to the number of years. [It is] like the days of a hired man [that] he shall be with him.

He Walks Among Those Who Walk in His Statutes

Lev 26:3 LSB - [3] 'If you walk in My statutes and keep My commandments so as to do them,

Lev 26:11-12 LSB - [11] 'Moreover, I will make My dwelling among you, and My soul will not loathe you. [12] 'I will also walk among you and be your God, and you shall be My people.

Lev 26:13 LSB - [13] 'I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt so that [you] would not be their slaves, and I broke the bars of your yoke and made you walk erect.

Reject His Statutes and He Will Strike You

Lev 26:13-16 LSB - [13] 'I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt so that [you] would not be their slaves, and I broke the bars of your yoke and made you walk erect. [14] 'But if you do not obey Me and do not do all these commandments, [15] if, instead, you reject My statutes, and if your soul loathes My judgments so as not to do all My commandments [and] so break My covenant, [16] I, in turn, will do this to you: I will appoint over you a sudden terror, consumption and fever that will waste away the eyes and cause the soul to pine away; also, you will sow your seed uselessly, for your enemies will eat it up.

Lev 26:40-42 LSB - [40] 'If they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers, in their unfaithfulness which they committed against Me, and also how they walked in hostility against Me-- [41] I also was walking in hostility against them, to bring them into the land of their enemies--or if their uncircumcised heart becomes humbled so that they then make up for their iniquity, [42] then I will remember My covenant with Jacob, and I will remember also My covenant with Isaac and My covenant with Abraham as well, and I will remember the land.

Holy to Yahweh

Lev 27:2 LSB - [2] "Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, 'When a man makes a difficult vow, he [shall be valued] according to your valuation of persons belonging to Yahweh.

Lev 27:7 LSB - [7] 'If [they are] from sixty years old and upward, if it is a male, then your valuation shall be fifteen shekels, and for the female ten shekels.

Lev 27:28 ESV - [28] "But no devoted thing that a man devotes to the LORD, of anything that he has, whether man or beast, or of his inherited field, shall be sold or redeemed; every devoted thing is most holy to the LORD.

Mar 7:10-13 ESV - [10] For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother'; and, 'Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.' [11] But you say, 'If a man tells his father or his mother, "Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban"' (that is, given to God)-- [12] then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother, [13] thus making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do."

Leviticus 22-24 - Yahweh’s Appointed Times

Various Statutes for Priests

Lev 22:15-16 LSB - [15] 'They shall not profane the holy [gifts] of the sons of Israel which they raise up to Yahweh, [16] and [so] cause them to bear punishment for guilt by eating their holy [gifts]; for I am Yahweh who makes them holy.'"

Offerings Without Blemish

Lev 22:18-19 LSB - [18] "Speak to Aaron and to his sons and to all the sons of Israel and say to them, 'Any man of the house of Israel or of the sojourners in Israel who brings near his offering, whether it is any of their votive or any of their freewill offerings, which they bring near to Yahweh for a burnt offering-- [19] for you to be accepted--[it must be] a male without blemish from the cattle, the sheep, or the goats.

Lev 22:32-33 LSB - [32] "And you shall not profane My holy name, but I will be treated as holy among the sons of Israel; I am Yahweh who makes you holy, [33] who brought you out from the land of Egypt to be your God; I am Yahweh."

Take my life and let it be

Author: Frances Ridley Havergal (1874)

1 Take my life and let it be
consecrated, Lord, to thee.
Take my moments and my days;
let them flow in endless praise,
let them flow in endless praise.

2 Take my hands and let them move
at the impulse of thy love.
Take my feet and let them be
swift and beautiful for thee,
swift and beautiful for thee.

3 Take my voice and let me sing
always, only, for my King.
Take my lips and let them be
filled with messages from thee,
filled with messages from thee.

4 Take my silver and my gold;
not a mite would I withhold.
Take my intellect and use
every power as thou shalt choose,
every power as thou shalt choose.

5 Take my will and make it thine;
it shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart it is thine own;
it shall be thy royal throne,
it shall be thy royal throne.

6 Take my love; my Lord, I pour
at thy feet its treasure store.
Take myself, and I will be
ever, only, all for thee,
ever, only, all for thee.

To Thee, O Lord, our hearts we raise

Author: W. Chatterton Dix (1864)

1 To thee, O Lord, our hearts we raise
in hymns of adoration,
to thee bring sacrifice of praise
with shouts of exultation:
bright robes of gold the fields adorn,
the hills with joy are ringing,
the valleys stand so thick with corn
that even they are singing.

2 And now, on this our festal day,
thy bounteous hand confessing,
upon thine altar, Lord, we lay
the first-fruits of thy blessing:
by thee the hungry soul is fed
with gifts of grace supernal;
thou who dost give us earthly bread,
give us the bread eternal.

3 We bear the burden of the day,
and often toil seems dreary;
but labour ends with sunset ray,
and rest comes for the weary:
may we, the angel-reaping o'er,
stand at the last accepted,
Christ's golden sheaves for evermore
to garners bright elected.

4 O blessèd is that land of God,
where saints abide for ever;
where golden fields spread far and broad,
where flows the crystal river:
the strains of all its holy throng
with ours today are blending;
thrice blessèd is that harvest-song
which never hath an ending.

An Eye for an Eye

Lev 24:19-20 LSB - [19] 'If a man injures his neighbor, just as he has done, so it shall be done to him: [20] fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth; just as he has injured a man, so it shall be inflicted on him.

Various Statutes

Lev 19:9-10 LSB - [9] 'Now when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very corners of your field, nor shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest. [10] 'Nor shall you glean your vineyard, nor shall you gather the fallen fruit of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the afflicted and for the sojourner. I am Yahweh your God.

Lev 21:21-23 LSB - [21] 'No man among the seed of Aaron the priest who has a defect shall approach to bring near the offerings to Yahweh by fire; [since] he has a defect, he shall not approach to bring near the food of his God. [22] 'He may eat the food of his God, [both] of the most holy and of the holy, [23] only he shall not go in to the veil or approach the altar because he has a defect, so that he will not profane My sanctuaries. For I am Yahweh who makes them holy.'"

Words & Music: Elisha A. Hoffman, 1905

1 You have longed for sweet peace, and for faith to increase,
and have earnestly, fervently prayed;
but you cannot have rest or be perfectly blest
until all on the altar is laid.

Refrain:
Is your all on the altar of sacrifice laid?
Your heart, does the Spirit control?
You can only be blest and have peace and sweet rest,
as you yield Him your body and soul.

2 Would you walk with the Lord in the light of His Word,
and have peace and contentment alway?
You must do His sweet will to be free from all ill,
on the altar your all you must lay. [Refrain]

3 O we never can know what the Lord will bestow
of the blessings for which we have prayed,
till our body and soul He doth fully control,
and our all on the altar is laid. [Refrain]

4 Who can tell all the love He will send from above,
and how happy our hearts will be ade,
of the fellowship sweet we shall share at His feet,
when our all on the altar is laid? [Refrain]

Leviticus 16-18 - Keep My Statutes and My Judgments

The Day of Atonement

Lev 16:2-4 LSB - [2] And Yahweh said to Moses: "Tell your brother Aaron that he shall not enter at any time into the holy place inside the veil, before the mercy seat which is on the ark, so that he will not die; for I will appear in the cloud over the mercy seat. [3] "Aaron shall enter the holy place with this: with a bull from the herd for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering. [4] "He shall put on the holy linen tunic, and the linen undergarments shall be next to his body, and he shall be girded with the linen sash and attired with the linen turban (these are holy garments). Then he shall bathe his body in water and put them on.

Lev 16:21-22 LSB - [21] "Then Aaron shall lay both of his hands on the head of the live goat, and confess over it all the iniquities of the sons of Israel and all their transgressions in regard to all their sins; and he shall lay them on the head of the goat and send [it] out into the wilderness by the hand of a man ready [to do this]. [22] "And the goat shall bear on itself all their iniquities to an isolated land; and he shall send out the goat in the wilderness.

Lev 16:29-31 LSB - [29] "And [this] shall be a perpetual statute for you: in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall humble your souls and not do any work, whether the native or the sojourner who sojourns among you; [30] for it is on this day that atonement shall be made for you to cleanse you; you will be clean from all your sins before Yahweh. [31] "It is to be a sabbath of solemn rest for you, that you may humble your souls; it is a perpetual statute.

Not all the blood of beasts

Isaac Watts (1674-1748)

1 Not all the blood of beasts,
On Jewish altars slain,
Could give the guilty conscience peace,
Or wash away its stain.

2 But Christ, the heavenly Lamb,
Takes all our sins away;
A sacrifice of nobler name,
And richer blood than they.

3 My faith would lay her hand
On that dear head of Thine,
While like a penitent I stand,
And there confess my sin.

4 My soul looks back to see
The burdens Thou didst bear
When hanging on the cursed tree,
And knows her guilt was there.

5 Believing, we rejoice
To see the curse remove;
We bless the Lamb with cheerful voice,
And sing His bleeding love.

Statutes Against Eating Blood

Lev 17:5-7 LSB - [5] "[The reason is] so that the sons of Israel may bring their sacrifices which they were sacrificing in the open field, that they may bring them in to Yahweh, at the doorway of the tent of meeting to the priest, and sacrifice them as sacrifices of peace offerings to Yahweh. [6] "And the priest shall splash the blood on the altar of Yahweh at the doorway of the tent of meeting and offer up the fat in smoke as a soothing aroma to Yahweh. [7] "And they shall no longer sacrifice their sacrifices to the goat demons with which they play the harlot. This shall be a perpetual statute to them throughout their generations."'

Lev 17:11 LSB - [11] 'For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life.'

1 There is a fountain filled with blood
Drawn from Immanuel's veins;
And sinners, plunged beneath that flood,
Lose all their guilty stains:
Lose all their guilty stains,
Lose all their guilty stains;
And sinners, plunged beneath that flood,
Lose all their guilty stains.

2 The dying thief rejoiced to see
That fountain in his day;
And there may I, though vile as he,
Wash all my sins away:
Wash all my sins away,
Wash all my sins away;
And there may I, though vile as he,
Wash all my sins away.

3 Dear dying Lamb, Thy precious blood
Shall never lose its pow'r,
Till all the ransomed Church of God
Be saved, to sin no more:
Be saved, to sin no more,
Be saved, to sin no more;
Till all the ransomed Church of God
Be saved to sin no more.

4 E'er since by faith I saw the stream
Thy flowing wounds supply,
Redeeming love has been my theme,
And shall be till I die:
And shall be till I die,
And shall be till I die;
Redeeming love has been my theme,
And shall be till I die.

5 When this poor lisping, stamm'ring tongue
Lies silent in the grave,
Then in a nobler, sweeter song
I'll sing Thy pow'r to save:
I'll sing Thy pow'r to save,
I'll sing Thy pow'r to save;
Then in a nobler, sweeter song
I'll sing Thy pow'r to save.

Statutes on the Nakedness of Relatives

Lev 18:2-5 LSB - [2] "Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, 'I am Yahweh your God. [3] 'You shall not do according to what is done in the land of Egypt where you lived, nor are you to do according to what is done in the land of Canaan where I am bringing you; you shall not walk in their statutes. [4] 'You are to do My judgments and keep My statutes, to walk in them; I am Yahweh your God. [5] 'So you shall keep My statutes and My judgments, which if a man does them, he shall live by them; I am Yahweh.

Lev 18:26-28 LSB - [26] 'But as for you, you shall keep My statutes and My judgments and shall not do any of these abominations, [neither] the native nor the sojourner who sojourns among you [27] (for the men of the land who have been before you have done all these abominations, and the land has become defiled); [28] so that the land will not vomit you out, should you defile it, as it has vomited out the nation which has been before you.

Take time to be holy

Author: William D. Longstaff (ca. 1882)

1 Take time to be holy, speak oft with thy Lord;
abide in Him always, and feed on His word.
Make friends of God’s children, help those who are weak,
forgetting in nothing His blessing to seek.

2 Take time to be holy, the world rushes on;
spend much time in secret with Jesus alone.
By looking to Jesus, like Him thou shalt be;
thy friends in thy conduct His likeness shall see.

3 Take time to be holy, let Him be thy guide,
and run not before Him, whatever betide.
In joy or in sorrow, still follow the Lord,
and, looking to Jesus, still trust in His word.

4 Take time to be holy, be calm in thy soul,
each thought and each motive beneath His control.
Thus led by His Spirit to fountains of love,
thou soon shalt be fitted for service above.

Leviticus 13-15 - Be Separated from Their Uncleanness

Statutes About Leprosy

Lev 13:45-46 LSB - [45] "As for the leper who has the infection, his clothes shall be torn, and the hair of his head shall be uncovered, and he shall cover his mustache and call out, 'Unclean! Unclean!' [46] "He shall remain unclean all the days during which he has the infection; he is unclean. He shall live alone; his [place of] habitation shall be outside the camp.

Statutes for Cleansing a Leper

Lev 14:2-3 LSB - [2] "This shall be the law of the leper in the day of his cleansing. Now he shall be brought to the priest, [3] and the priest shall go out to the outside of the camp. Thus the priest shall look, and if the infection of leprosy has been healed in the leper,

Lev 14:13-14 LSB - [13] "Next he shall slaughter the male lamb in the place where they slaughter the sin offering and the burnt offering, at the place of the sanctuary--for the guilt offering, like the sin offering, belongs to the priest; it is most holy. [14] "The priest shall then take some of the blood of the guilt offering, and the priest shall put [it] on the lobe of the right ear of the one to be cleansed and on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot.

Come to Calvary's holy mountain

Author: James Montgomery (1819)

1 Come to Calv'ry's holy mountain,
sinners, ruined by the fall;
here a pure and healing fountain
flows for you, for me, for all,
in a full, perpetual tide,
opened when our Savior died.

2 Come in poverty and meanness,
come defiled, without, within;
from infection and uncleanness,
from the leprosy of sin,
wash your robes and make them white;
you shall walk with God in light.

3 Come in sorrow and contrition,
wounded, paralyzed, and blind;
here the guilty, free remission,
here the troubled, peace may find.
Health this fountain will restore;
they that drink shall thirst no more.

4 They that drink shall live forever;
'tis a soul-renewing flood.
God is faithful; God will never
break his covenant of blood,
signed when our Redeemer died,
sealed when he was glorified.

Statute for Cleansing a Leprous House

Lev 14:34-35 LSB - [34] "When you enter the land of Canaan, which I am giving you for a possession, and I put a mark of leprosy on a house in the land of your possession, [35] then the one who owns the house shall come and tell the priest, saying, '[Something] like a mark [of leprosy] has become visible to me in the house.'

Lev 14:54-57 LSB - [54] This is the law for any mark of leprosy--even for a scale, [55] and for the leprous garment or house, [56] and for a swelling and for a scab and for a bright spot-- [57] to instruct when they are unclean and when they are clean. This is the law of leprosy.

Take Time to Be Holy

Author: William D. Longstaff (ca. 1882)

1 Take time to be holy, speak oft with thy Lord;
abide in Him always, and feed on His word.
Make friends of God’s children, help those who are weak,
forgetting in nothing His blessing to seek.

2 Take time to be holy, the world rushes on;
spend much time in secret with Jesus alone.
By looking to Jesus, like Him thou shalt be;
thy friends in thy conduct His likeness shall see.

Nothing But the Blood of Jesus

Author: Robert Lowry (1876)

1 What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Refrain:
O precious is the flow
that makes me white as snow;
no other fount I know;
nothing but the blood of Jesus.

2 For my pardon this I see:
nothing but the blood of Jesus.
For my cleansing this my plea:
nothing but the blood of Jesus. [Refrain]

3 Nothing can for sin atone:
nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Naught of good that I have done:
nothing but the blood of Jesus. [Refrain]

4 This is all my hope and peace:
nothing but the blood of Jesus.
This is all my righteousness:
nothing but the blood of Jesus. [Refrain]

Leviticus 10-12 - You Shall Be Holy, for I Am Holy

Nadab and Abihu Offer Strange Fire

Lev 10:1-2 LSB - [1] Then Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took their respective firepans and put fire in them. Then they placed incense on it and offered strange fire before Yahweh, which He had not commanded them. [2] And fire came out from the presence of Yahweh and consumed them, and they died before Yahweh.

Lev 10:8-11 LSB - [8] Yahweh then spoke to Aaron, saying, [9] "Do not drink wine or strong drink, neither you nor your sons with you, when you come into the tent of meeting, so that you will not die--it is a perpetual statute throughout your generations-- [10] and so as to separate between the holy and the profane, and between the unclean and the clean, [11] and so as to instruct the sons of Israel in all the statutes which Yahweh has spoken to them through Moses."

Clean and Unclean Animals

Lev 11:3 LSB - [3] 'Whatever divides a hoof, thus making split hoofs, [and] chews the cud, among the animals, that you may eat.

Lev 11:9 LSB - [9] 'These you may eat, whatever is in the water: all that have fins and scales, those in the water, in the seas, or in the rivers, you may eat.

Lev 11:45 LSB - [45] 'For I am Yahweh who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God; thus you shall be holy, for I am holy.'"

Words: Charles Wesley

He wills that I should holy be;
That holiness I long to feel;
That full divine conformity,
To all my Savior’s righteous will.

See, Lord, the travail of Thy soul
Accomplished in the change of mine,
And plunge me, every whit made whole,
In all the depths of love divine.

Atonement After Giving Birth

Lev 12:8 LSB - [8] 'But if she cannot afford a lamb, then she shall take two turtledoves or two young pigeons, the one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering; and the priest shall make atonement for her, and she will be clean.'"

Luk 2:22, 24 LSB - [22] And when the days for their cleansing according to the Law of Moses were fulfilled, they brought Him up to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord ... [24] and to offer a sacrifice according to what was said in the Law of the Lord, "A PAIR OF TURTLEDOVES OR TWO YOUNG PIGEONS."

Leviticus 7-9 - Keep the Charge of Yahweh

Statutes for the Priest in the Offerings

Lev 7:1 LSB - [1] 'Now this is the law of the guilt offering; it is most holy.

Lev 7:2 LSB - [2] 'In the place where they slaughter the burnt offering they are to slaughter the guilt offering, and he shall splash its blood around on the altar.

The Ordination of Aaron and His Sons

Lev 8:1-3 LSB - [1] Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, [2] "Take Aaron and his sons with him, and the garments and the anointing oil and the bull of the sin offering and the two rams and the basket of unleavened bread, [3] and assemble all the congregation at the doorway of the tent of meeting."

Lev 8:18-21 LSB - [18] Then he brought near the ram of the burnt offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram. [19] Then Moses slaughtered [it] and splashed the blood around on the altar. [20] And he cut the ram into its pieces. Then Moses offered up the head and the pieces and the suet in smoke. [21] And he washed the entrails and the legs with water. Then Moses offered up the whole ram in smoke on the altar. It was a burnt offering for a soothing aroma; it was an offering by fire to Yahweh, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses.

Lev 8:35 LSB - [35] "At the doorway of the tent of meeting, moreover, you shall remain day and night for seven days and keep the charge of Yahweh, so that you will not die, for so I have been commanded."

A charge to keep I have

Author: Charles Wesley (1762)
1 A charge to keep I have,
a God to glorify,
a never-dying soul to save,
and fit it for the sky.

2 To serve the present age,
my calling to fulfill,
O may it all my pow'rs engage
to do my Master's will!

3 Arm me with watchful care
as in Thy sight to live,
and now Thy servant, Lord, prepare
a strict account to give!

4 Help me to watch and pray,
and still on Thee rely,
O let me not my trust betray,
but press to realms on high.

Aaron Brings Offerings

Lev 9:1-2 LSB - [1] Now it happened on the eighth day that Moses called Aaron and his sons and the elders of Israel; [2] and he said to Aaron, "Take for yourself a calf, a bull, for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering, [both] without blemish, and bring [them] near before Yahweh.

Eze 43:27 LSB - [27] 'So they will complete the days. And it shall be that on the eighth day and onward, the priests shall offer on the altar your burnt offerings and your peace offerings; and I will accept you,' declares Lord Yahweh."

Lev 9:7 LSB - [7] Moses then said to Aaron, "Come near to the altar and offer your sin offering and your burnt offering, that you may make atonement for yourself and for the people; then offer the offering for the people, that you may make atonement for them, just as Yahweh has commanded."

Lev 9:22-24 LSB - [22] Then Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people and blessed them, and he stepped down after offering the sin offering and the burnt offering and the peace offerings. [23] And Moses and Aaron went into the tent of meeting. Then they came out and blessed the people. And the glory of Yahweh appeared to all the people. [24] Then fire came out from before Yahweh and consumed the burnt offering and the portions of fat on the altar. And all the people saw [it] and shouted and fell on their faces.

2Co 3:18 LSB - [18] But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.

Come, Thou Almighty King

Author: C. Wesley

1 Come, Thou Almighty King,
help us Thy name to sing;
help us to praise:
Father, all glorious,
o'er all victorious,
come, and reign over us,
Ancient of Days.

2 Come, Thou Incarnate Word,
gird on Thy mighty sword,
our pray'r attend:
come, and Thy people bless,
and give Thy Word success:
Spirit of holiness,
on us descend.

3 Come, Holy Comforter,
Thy sacred witness bear
in this glad hour:
Thou who almighty art,
now rule in every heart,
and ne'er from us depart,
Spirit of pow'r.

4 To Thee, great One in Three,
eternal praises be
hence, evermore.
His sov'reign majesty
may we in glory see,
and to eternity
love and adore!

Leviticus 4-6 - Sin Offerings and Guilt Offerings

The Statutes of Sin Offerings

Lev 4:1-4 LSB - [1] Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, [2] "Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, 'If a person sins unintentionally in any of the things which Yahweh has commanded not to be done, and he does any one of them, [3] if the anointed priest sins so as to bring guilt on the people, then let him bring near to Yahweh a bull from the herd without blemish as a sin offering for the sin he has committed. [4] 'Then he shall bring the bull to the doorway of the tent of meeting before Yahweh, and he shall lay his hand on the head of the bull and slaughter the bull before Yahweh.

Lev 4:5-6, 32 LSB - [5] 'Then the anointed priest shall take some of the blood of the bull and bring it to the tent of meeting, [6] and the priest shall dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle some of the blood seven times before Yahweh in front of the veil of the sanctuary. ... [32] 'But if he brings a lamb as his offering for a sin offering, he shall bring it, a female without blemish.

Lev 4:27-28 LSB - [27] 'Now if anyone of the common people sins unintentionally in doing any of the things which Yahweh has commanded not to be done, and becomes guilty, [28] or if his sin which he has committed is made known to him, then he shall bring for his offering a goat, a female without blemish, for his sin which he has committed.

Lev 5:4-6 LSB - [4] 'Or if a person swears thoughtlessly with his lips to do evil or to do good, in whatever matter a man may speak thoughtlessly with a [sworn] oath, and it is hidden from him, and then he comes to know [it], he will be guilty in one of these. [5] 'So it shall be, when he becomes guilty in one of these, that he shall confess that in which he has sinned. [6] 'He shall also bring his guilt offering to Yahweh for his sin which he has committed, a female from the flock, a lamb or a goat, as a sin offering. So the priest shall make atonement on his behalf for his sin.

The Statutes of Guilt Offerings

Lev 5:15 LSB - [15] "If a person acts unfaithfully and sins unintentionally against the holy things of Yahweh, then he shall bring his guilt offering to Yahweh: a ram without blemish from the flock, according to your valuation in silver by shekels, in [terms of] the shekel of the sanctuary, for a guilt offering.

Statutes for the Priest in the Offerings

Lev 6:12-13 LSB - [12] 'And the fire on the altar shall be kept burning on it. It shall not go out, but the priest shall burn wood on it every morning; and he shall lay out the burnt offering on it and offer up in smoke the fat portions of the peace offerings on it. [13] 'Fire shall be kept burning continually on the altar; it shall not go out.

Lev 6:23 LSB - [23] "So every grain offering of the priest shall be burned entirely. It shall not be eaten."

I lay my sins on Jesus

Author: Horatius Bonar (1843)

1 I lay my sins on Jesus,
the spotless Lamb of God;
He bears them all, and frees us
from the accursed load;
I bring my guilt to Jesus,
to wash my crimson stains
white in His blood most precious,
till not a spot remains.

2 I lay my wants on Jesus;
all fullness dwells in Him;
He heals all my diseases,
He doth my soul redeem;
I lay my griefs on Jesus,
my burdens and my cares;
He from them all releases,
He all my sorrow shares.

3 I rest my soul on Jesus,
this weary soul of mine;
His right hand me embraces,
I on His breast recline.
I love the Name of Jesus,
Immanuel, Christ, the Lord;
like fragrance on the breezes
His Name abroad is poured.

4 I long to be like Jesus,
meek, loving, lowly, mild;
I long to be like Jesus,
the Father's holy Child;
I long to be with Jesus
amid the heav'nly throng,
to sing with saints His praises,
to learn the angels' song.

Leviticus 1-3 - The Statutes of Burnt Offerings

The Statutes of Burnt Offerings

Lev 1:2-4 LSB - [2] "Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, 'When any man from among you brings an offering near to Yahweh, you shall bring your offering of animals from the herd or the flock. [3] 'If his offering is a burnt offering from the herd, he shall bring it near, a male without blemish; he shall bring it near to the doorway of the tent of meeting, that he may be accepted before Yahweh. [4] 'And he shall lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, that it may be accepted for him to make atonement on his behalf.

Lev 1:9 LSB - [9] 'Its entrails, however, and its legs he shall wash with water. And the priest shall offer up in smoke all of it on the altar for a burnt offering, an offering by fire of a soothing aroma to Yahweh.

Not all the blood of beasts

Isaac Watts (1674-1748)

1 Not all the blood of beasts,
On Jewish altars slain,
Could give the guilty conscience peace,
Or wash away its stain.

2 But Christ, the heavenly Lamb,
Takes all our sins away;
A sacrifice of nobler name,
And richer blood than they.

3 My faith would lay her hand
On that dear head of Thine,
While like a penitent I stand,
And there confess my sin.

4 My soul looks back to see
The burdens Thou didst bear
When hanging on the cursed tree,
And knows her guilt was there.

5 Believing, we rejoice
To see the curse remove;
We bless the Lamb with cheerful voice,
And sing His bleeding love.

The Statutes of Grain Offerings

Lev 2:1-2 LSB - [1] 'Now when anyone brings near a grain offering as an offering to Yahweh, his offering shall be of fine flour, and he shall pour oil on it and put frankincense on it. [2] 'He shall then bring it to Aaron's sons the priests; and he shall take from it his handful of its fine flour and of its oil with all of its frankincense. And the priest shall offer [it] up in smoke [as] its memorial portion on the altar, an offering by fire of a soothing aroma to Yahweh.

Lev 2:11 LSB - [11] 'No grain offering, which you bring near to Yahweh, shall be made with leaven, for you shall not offer up in smoke any leaven or any honey as an offering by fire to Yahweh.

Lev 2:12 LSB - [12] 'As an offering of first fruits you shall bring them near to Yahweh, but they shall not ascend for a soothing aroma on the altar.

The Statutes of Peace Offerings

Lev 3:1-2 LSB - [1] 'Now if his offering is a sacrifice of peace offerings, if he is going to bring near one from the herd, whether male or female, he shall bring it near without blemish before Yahweh. [2] 'Then he shall lay his hand on the head of his offering and slaughter it at the doorway of the tent of meeting, and Aaron's sons the priests shall splash the blood around on the altar.

Lev 3:3-5 LSB - [3] 'From the sacrifice of the peace offerings he shall bring an offering by fire near to Yahweh, the fat that covers the entrails and all the fat that is on the entrails, [4] and the two kidneys with the fat that is on them, which is on the loins, and the lobe of the liver, which he shall remove with the kidneys. [5] 'Then Aaron's sons shall offer [it] up in smoke on the altar on the burnt offering, which is on the wood that is on the fire; it is an offering by fire of a soothing aroma to Yahweh.

Lev 3:17 LSB - [17] 'It is a perpetual statute throughout your generations in all your [places of] habitation: you shall not eat any fat or any blood.'"
