2 Samuel 4-6 - David Dances Before Yahweh

Ish-bosheth Murdered

2Sa 4:12 LSB - [12] Then David commanded the young men, and they killed them and cut off their hands and feet and hung them up beside the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ish-bosheth and buried it in the grave of Abner in Hebron.

David Anointed King over All Israel

2Sa 5:1 LSB - [1] Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said, "Behold, we are your bone and your flesh.

2Sa 5:3 LSB - [3] So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David cut a covenant with them in Hebron before Yahweh; then they anointed David king over Israel.

David Defeats the Philistines

2Sa 5:19 LSB - [19] Then David asked of Yahweh, saying, "Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You give them into my hand?" And Yahweh said to David, "Go up, for I will certainly give the Philistines into your hand."

2Sa 5:23 LSB - [23] So David asked of Yahweh, and He said, "You shall not go [directly] up; circle around behind them and come at them in front of the balsam trees.

The Ark Is Brought to Jerusalem

2Sa 6:6-7 LSB - [6] Then they came to the threshing floor of Nacon. And Uzzah reached out toward the ark of God and took hold of it, because the oxen nearly upset [it]. [7] And the anger of Yahweh burned against Uzzah, and God struck him down there for his irreverence; and he died there by the ark of God.

Num 4:15 LSB - [15] "When Aaron and his sons have finished covering the holy [objects] and all the furnishings of the sanctuary, when the camp is to set out, after that the sons of Kohath shall come to carry [them], so that they will not touch the holy [objects] and die. These are the things in the tent of meeting which the sons of Kohath are to carry.

David Dances Before Yahweh

2Sa 6:16 LSB - [16] Then it happened [as] the ark of Yahweh came into the city of David, that Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before Yahweh; and she despised him in her heart.

“No doubt, there are particularly nice and dainty people who will censure God’s chosen if they live wholly to his praise, and they will call them eccentric, old-fashioned, obstinate, absurd, and I don’t know what besides. From the window of their superiority they look down upon us.” (Spurgeon)

2Sa 6:21-22 LSB - [21] So David said to Michal, "[It was] before Yahweh, who chose me above your father and above all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of Yahweh, over Israel; therefore I will celebrate before Yahweh. [22] "And I will be esteemed even more lightly than this and will be humble in my own eyes, but with the maids of whom you have spoken, with them I will be glorified."

“David would more and more abase himself before the Lord. He felt that whatever Michal’s opinion of him might be, it could not be more humbling than his own view of himself. Brother, if any man thinks ill of you, do not be angry with him; for you are worse than he thinks you to be.” (Spurgeon)
