In Matthew 8:10-12, Jesus praised the faith of the centurion and said that the children of the kingdom - the Israelites, without such faith - shall be cast out into outer darkness where there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Mat 8:10-12
When Jesus heard [it], he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.
But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
In Matthew 13:38-42, the tares are the children of the wicked one, are the ones who do iniquity, are gathered and burned in the fire, and are cast into a furnace of fire, where there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
Mat 13:38-42
The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked [one]; The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. As therefore the Tarik are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
In Matthew 22:11-14, a man was called to the wedding but were not chosen because the man was not wearing a wedding garment. So he was bound in his hand and foot and was cast into outer darkness, where there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Mat 22:11-14
And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment: And he sate unto him, Friend, how canst thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless. Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast [him] into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. For many are called, but few [are] chosen.
In Matthew 24:48-51, the evil servant began to smite his fellowservants and eat and drink with the drunken because he thought that his Lord delayed his coming. The evil servant was cut asunder with the hypocrites where there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth .
Mat 24:48-51
But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; And shall begin to smite [his] fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken; The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for [him], and in an hour that he is not aware of, And shall cut him asunder, and appoint [him] his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
In Matthew 25:25-30, a servant who received one talent, according to his several ability, was afraid, and went and hid the talent in the earth. His lord said the servant was wicked, slothful, and unprofitable and had the talent taken away from the servant. The servant was cast into outer darkness, where there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Mat 25:25-30
And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, [there] thou hast [that is] thine. His lord answered and said unto him, [Thou] wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed: Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and [then] at my coming I should have received mine own with usury. Take therefore the talent from him, and give [it] unto him which hath ten talents. For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Can I generalize and say that weeping and gnashing of teeth is for unsaved people? I think so. Tares are the children of the wicked one. The man not wearing a wedding garment was not a chosen one. The evil servant was a hypocrite. The servant with one talent was wicked, slothful, and unprofitable. Surely these characteristics are found in unsaved people. Although saved people may be slothful and unprofitable, they are not children of the wicked one or they themselves are not wicked. Also saved people are chosen by God.
Can I conclude that the furnace of the fire and the outer darkness are the same place or the hell? Even though the expression weeping and gnashing of teeth is tied to the unsaved, I am not quite sure if the furnace of the fire and the outer darkness are the same place or the hell. Surely the furnace of the fire is the hell but what about the outer darkness?
Based on Torrey's New Topical Textbook on the punishment of the wicked, I think both the furnace of the fire and the outer darkness are the same destination of the wicked or the unsaved.
See what John MacArthur said about the subject.
