Job 1-3 - Blameless, Upright, Fearing God, and Turning Away from Evil

Job Was Greatest of the Sons of the East

Job 1:1 LSB - [1] There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job; and that man was blameless, upright, fearing God, and turning away from evil.

Job 1:5 LSB - [5] Now it happened when the days of feasting had completed their cycle, that Job would send and set them apart as holy. And he would rise up early in the morning and offer burnt offerings [according to] the number of them all; for Job said, "Perhaps my sons have sinned and cursed God in their hearts." Thus Job did continually.

All Job Has Is in Satan’s Hand

Job 1:6 LSB - [6] Now it was the day that the sons of God came to stand before Yahweh, and Satan also came among them.

Job 1:7 LSB - [7] And Yahweh said to Satan, "From where do you come?" Then Satan answered Yahweh and said, "From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it."

1Pe 5:8 LSB - [8] Be of sober [spirit], be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

Job 1:8 LSB - [8] Then Yahweh said to Satan, "Have you set your heart upon My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, fearing God and turning away from evil."

Job 1:12 LSB - [12] Then Yahweh said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in your hand, only do not send forth your hand toward him." So Satan went out from the presence of Yahweh.

Messengers Speak of the Fire of God

Job 1:20-22 LSB - [20] Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshiped. [21] And he said, "Naked I came from my mother's womb, And naked I shall return there. Yahweh gave, and Yahweh has taken away. Blessed be the name of Yahweh." [22] Through all this Job did not sin, nor did he give offense to God.

Luk 12:15 LSB - [15] Then He said to them, "Watch out and be on your guard against every form of greed, for not [even] when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions."

Satan Strikes Job’s Flesh

Job 2:3 LSB - [3] And Yahweh said to Satan, "Have you set your heart upon My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, fearing God and turning away from evil. And he still holds fast his integrity. So you incited Me against him to swallow him up in vain."

Job 2:10 LSB - [10] But he said to her, "You speak as one of the wickedly foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God and not accept calamity?" In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

Job’s Three Friends

Job 2:11 LSB - [11] Then Job's three friends heard of all this calamity that had come upon him. So they came each one from his own place, Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite; and they made an appointment together to come to console him and comfort him.

Job 2:13 LSB - [13] Then they sat down on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights with no one speaking a word to him, for they saw that [his] pain was very great.

Job Curses the Day of His Birth

Job 3:23 LSB - [23] "[Why is light given] to a man whose way is hidden, And whom God has hedged in?

Job 1:10 LSB - [10] "Have You not made a hedge about him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.

Philippians 1-4 - Pressing On Toward the Goal

Thanksgiving

Phl 1:3-5 LSB - [3] I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, [4] always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all, [5] because of your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now.

Phl 1:6-7 LSB - [6] [For I am] confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. [7] For it is only right for me to think this way about you all, because I have you in my heart, since both in my chains and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, you all are fellow partakers with me in this grace.

The Progress of the Gospel

Phl 1:20 LSB - [20] according to my earnest expectation and hope, that I will not be put to shame in anything, but [that] with all boldness, Christ will even now, as always, be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death.

To Live Is Christ

Phl 1:21 LSB - [21] For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

Phl 1:29-30 LSB - [29] For to you it has been granted for Christ's sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake, [30] having the same struggle which you saw in me, and now hear [to be] in me.

Christ’s Humility and Exaltation

Phl 2:5-7 LSB - [5] Have this [way of] thinking in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, [6] who, although existing in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, [7] but emptied Himself, by taking the form of a slave, by being made in the likeness of men.

Phl 2:8-11 LSB - [8] Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. [9] Therefore, God also highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, [10] so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, [11] and that EVERY TONGUE WILL CONFESS that Jesus Christ is LORD, to the glory of God the Father.

Phl 2:14-16 LSB - [14] Do all things without grumbling or disputing, [15] so that you will be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, [16] holding fast the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I will have reason to boast because I did not run in vain nor labor in vain.

Timothy and Epaphroditus Sent

Phl 2:19 LSB - [19] But I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you shortly, so that I also may be in good spirits when I learn of your circumstances.

Phl 2:22 LSB - [22] But you know of his proven worth, that he served with me in the furtherance of the gospel like a child [serving] his father.

Righteousness Through Faith in Christ

Phl 3:8-11 LSB - [8] More than that, I count all things to be loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ [9] and be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own which is from [the] Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which [is] from God upon faith, [10] that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, [11] in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.

Pressing On Toward the Goal

Phl 3:12-14 LSB - [12] Not that I have already obtained [it] or have already become perfect, but I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus. [13] Brothers, I do not consider myself as having laid hold of [it] yet, but one thing [I do]: forgetting what [lies] behind and reaching forward to what [lies] ahead, [14] I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Phl 3:20-21 LSB - [20] For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, [21] who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by His working through which He is able to even subject all things to Himself.

Rejoice in the Lord Always

Phl 4:4 LSB - [4] Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!

Phl 4:6-7 LSB - [6] Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. [7] And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

God Will Fill Your Needs

Phl 4:12-13 LSB - [12] I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in abundance; in any and all things I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. [13] I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

Deuteronomy 31-34

Be Strong and Courageous

Deu 31:7-8 LSB - [7] Then Moses called to Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, "Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land which Yahweh has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall give it to them as an inheritance. [8] "And Yahweh is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed."

Deu 31:10-11 LSB - [10] Then Moses commanded them, saying, "At the end of [every] seven years, at the time of the year of the remission of debts, at the Feast of Booths, [11] when all Israel comes to appear before Yahweh your God at the place which He will choose, you shall read this law in front of all Israel in their hearing.

Yahweh Has Moses Write a Song

Deu 31:19-21 LSB - [19] "So now, write this song for yourselves and teach it to the sons of Israel; put it in their mouths, so that this song may be a witness for Me against the sons of Israel. [20] "For when I bring them into the land flowing with milk and honey, which I swore to their fathers, and they have eaten and are satisfied and become fat, then they will turn to other gods and serve them and spurn Me and break My covenant. [21] "Then it will be, when many evils and troubles have found them, that this song will answer them as a witness (for it shall not be forgotten from the mouths of their seed); for I know their intent which they are developing today, before I have brought them into the land which I swore."

Joshua Is Commissioned

Deu 31:23 LSB - [23] Then He commissioned Joshua the son of Nun and said, "Be strong and courageous, for you shall bring the sons of Israel into the land which I swore to them, and I will be with you."

The Song of Moses

Deu 32:4 LSB - [4] "The Rock! His work is perfect, For all His ways are just; A God of faithfulness and without injustice, Righteous and upright is He.

Deu 32:10-11 LSB - [10] "He found him in a desert land, And in the howling waste of a wilderness; He encircled him; He cared for him; He guarded him as the pupil of His eye. [11] "Like an eagle that stirs up its nest, That hovers over its young, He spread His wings and caught them; He carried them on His pinions.

Deu 32:39 LSB - [39] 'See now that I, I am He, And there is no god besides Me; It is I who put to death and give life. I have wounded, and it is I who heal, And there is no one who can deliver from My hand.

Deu 32:47 LSB - [47] "For it is not an idle word for you; indeed it is your life. And by this word you will prolong your days in the land, which you are about to cross the Jordan to possess."

Moses to Go Up Mount Nebo

Deu 32:50-51 LSB - [50] "Then die on the mountain where you ascend, and be gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people, [51] because you [both] acted unfaithfully with Me in the midst of the sons of Israel at the waters of Meribah-kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin, because you [both] did not treat Me as holy in the midst of the sons of Israel.

The Blessing of Moses

Deu 33:26-27 LSB - [26] "There is none like the God of Jeshurun, Who rides the heavens to your help, And through the skies in His majesty. [27] "The eternal God is a dwelling place, And underneath are the everlasting arms; And He drove out the enemy from before you, And said, 'Destroy!'

The Death of Moses

Deu 34:4 LSB - [4] Then Yahweh said to him, "This is the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, 'I will give it to your seed'; I have let you see [it] with your eyes, but you shall not go over there."

Deu 34:6 LSB - [6] And He buried him in the valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth-peor; but no man knows his burial place to this day.

Deuteronomy 28-30 - THE WORD IS NEAR YOU

Blessings for Keeping the Commandments

Deu 28:2 LSB - [2] "And all these blessings will come upon you and overtake you if you listen to the voice of Yahweh your God:

Curses for Not Keeping the Commandments

Deu 28:15 LSB - [15] "But it will be, if you do not listen to the voice of Yahweh your God, to keep [and] to do all His commandments and His statutes with which I am commanding you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you:

Deu 28:20 LSB - [20] "Yahweh will send upon you the curse, confusion, and rebuke, in all that you send forth your hand to do, until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly, on account of the evil of your deeds, because you have forsaken Me.

Deu 28:47-48 LSB - [47] "Because you did not serve Yahweh your God with gladness and a merry heart--because of the abundance of all things, [48] therefore you shall serve your enemies whom Yahweh will send against you, in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in the lack of all things; and He will put an iron yoke on your neck until He has destroyed you.

Deu 28:66-67 LSB - [66] "So your life shall hang in doubt before you; and you will be in dread night and day and shall not have [any] faith in your life. [67] "In the morning you shall say, 'Would that it were evening!' And at evening you shall say, 'Would that it were morning!' because of the dread of your heart which you dread, and because of the sight of your eyes which you will see.

The Covenant in Moab

Deu 29:2-4 LSB - [2] And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, "You have seen all that Yahweh did before your eyes in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh and all his servants and all his land; [3] the great trials which your eyes have seen, those great signs and wonders. [4] "Yet to this day Yahweh has not given you a heart to know, nor eyes to see, nor ears to hear.

Isa 6:10 LSB - [10] "Render the hearts of this people insensitive, Their ears dull, And their eyes dim, Lest they see with their eyes, And hear with their ears, And understand with their hearts, And return and be healed."

Mat 13:13-14 LSB - [13] "Therefore I speak to them in parables; because while seeing they do not see, and while hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. [14] "And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled, which says, 'YOU WILL KEEP ON HEARING, BUT WILL NOT UNDERSTAND; YOU WILL KEEP ON SEEING, BUT WILL NOT PERCEIVE;

Deu 29:29 LSB - [29] "The secret things belong to Yahweh our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may do all the words of this law.

Open My Eyes, That I May See

Author: Clara H. Scott (1895)

1 Open my eyes, that I may see
glimpses of truth Thou hast for me;
place in my hands the wonderful key,
that shall unclasp and set me free.
Silently now I wait for Thee,
ready, my God, Thy will to see;
open my eyes, illumine me,
Spirit divine!

2 Open my ears, that I may hear
voices of truth Thou sendest clear;
and while the wave-notes fall on my ear,
ev’rything false will disappear.
Silently now I wait for Thee,
ready, my God, Thy will to see;
open my ears, illumine me,
Spirit divine!

3 Open my mouth, and let me bear
gladly the warm truth ev’rywhere;
Open my heart, and let me prepare
love with Thy children thus to share.
Silently now I wait for Thee,
ready, my God, Thy will to see;
open my mouth, illumine me,
Spirit divine!

Yahweh Will Take You Back

Deu 30:1-3 LSB - [1] "So it will be, when all of these things have come upon you, the blessing and the curse which I have set before you, and you cause [these things] to return to your heart in all the nations where Yahweh your God has banished you, [2] and you return to Yahweh your God and listen to His voice with all your heart and soul according to all that I am commanding you today, you and your sons, [3] then Yahweh your God will return you from captivity and return [His] compassion on you, and He will gather you again from all the peoples where Yahweh your God has scattered you.

Deu 30:11-14 LSB - [11] "For this commandment which I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you, nor is it far [from you]. [12] "It is not in heaven, that you should say, 'Who will go up to heaven for us and get it for us and make us hear it, that we may do it?' [13] "Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, 'Who will cross the sea for us and get it for us and make us hear it, that we may do it?' [14] "But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may do it.

Rom 10:6-10 LSB - [6] But the righteousness of faith speaks in this way: "DO NOT SAY IN YOUR HEART, 'WHO WILL GO UP INTO HEAVEN?' (that is, to bring Christ down), [7] or 'WHO WILL GO DOWN INTO THE ABYSS?' (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead)." [8] But what does it say? "THE WORD IS NEAR YOU, IN YOUR MOUTH AND IN YOUR HEART"--that is, the word of faith which we are preaching, [9] that if you confess with your mouth Jesus [as] Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; [10] for with the heart a person believes, leading to righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, leading to salvation.

Choose Life

Deu 30:15-16 LSB - [15] "See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, and death and calamity; [16] in that I am commanding you today to love Yahweh your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His judgments, that you may live and multiply, and that Yahweh your God may bless you in the land where you are entering to possess it.

Deu 26:16-19 LSB - [16] "This day Yahweh your God commands you to do these statutes and judgments. You shall therefore be careful to do them with all your heart and with all your soul. [17] "You have today declared Yahweh to be your God, and that you would walk in His ways and keep His statutes, His commandments, and His judgments, and listen to His voice. [18] "And Yahweh has today declared you to be His people, a treasured possession, as He promised you, and that you should keep all His commandments; [19] and that He will set you high above all nations which He has made, for praise, a name, and beauty; and that you shall be a holy people to Yahweh your God, as He has spoken."

Curses on Mount Ebal

Deu 27:12-14 LSB - [12] "When you cross the Jordan, these shall stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin. [13] "For the curse, these shall stand on Mount Ebal: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali. [14] "The Levites shall then answer and say to all the men of Israel with a loud voice,

[23] "And you shall eat in the presence of Yahweh your God, at the place where He chooses for His name to dwell, the tithe of your grain, your new wine, your oil, and the firstborn of your herd and your flock, so that you may learn to fear Yahweh your God all [your] days.

Deu 14:26-27 LSB - [26] "And you may spend the money for whatever your heart desires: for oxen or sheep or wine or strong drink or whatever your heart desires; and there you shall eat in the presence of Yahweh your God and be glad, you and your household. [27] "Also you shall not forsake the Levite who is within your gates, for he has no portion or inheritance among you.

Remission of Debt Every Seven Years

Deu 15:7-8 LSB - [7] "If there is a needy one among you, one of your brothers, in any of your gates [of the towns] in your land which Yahweh your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart nor close your hand from your needy brother; [8] but you shall freely open your hand to him and shall generously lend him sufficient for his need [in] whatever he lacks.

Deu 15:10-11 LSB - [10] "You shall generously give to him, and your heart shall not be grieved when you give to him, because for this thing Yahweh your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you send forth your hand [to do]. [11] "For the needy will never cease [to be] in the land; therefore I am commanding you, saying, 'You shall freely open your hand to your brother, to your afflicted and needy in your land.'

Deu 15:12-15 LSB - [12] "If your brother, a Hebrew man or woman, is sold to you, then he shall serve you six years, but in the seventh year you shall let him go [to be] free from you. [13] "When you let him go [to be] free from you, you shall not let him go empty-handed. [14] "You shall furnish him generously from your flock and from your threshing floor and from your wine vat; you shall give to him as Yahweh your God has blessed you. [15] "And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and Yahweh your God redeemed you; therefore I am commanding you this today.

Deu 15:16-17 LSB - [16] "And it will be that, if he says to you, 'I will not go out from you,' because he loves you and your household, since he fares well with you; [17] then you shall take an awl and pierce it through his ear into the door, and he shall be your servant forever. Also you shall do likewise to your maidservant.

I love, I love my Master

Frances Ridley Havergal (1836-1879)

1 I love, I love my Master,
I will not go out free,
For He is my Redeemer;
He paid the price for me.
I would not leave His service,
It is so sweet and blest;
And in the weariest moments
He gives the truest rest.

2 My Master shed His life-blood
My vassal life to win,
And save me from the bondage
Of tyrant self and sin.
He chose me for His service,
And gave me power to choose
That blessed, perfect freedom,
Which I shall never lose.

3 I would not halve my service,
His only it must be!
His only, who so loved me,
And gave Himself for me.
Rejoicing and adoring,
Henceforth my song shall be,
I love, I love my Master,
I will not go out free.

Deu 15:19-20 LSB - [19] "You shall set apart as holy to Yahweh your God all the firstborn males that are born of your herd and of your flock; you shall not work with the firstborn of your herd nor shear the firstborn of your flock. [20] "You and your household shall eat it every year before Yahweh your God in the place which Yahweh chooses.

Deuteronomy 10-12 - Yahweh’s Chosen Place of Worship

The Tablets Rewritten

Deu 10:1-2 LSB - [1] "At that time Yahweh said to me, 'Carve out for yourself two tablets of stone like the former ones, and come up to Me on the mountain, and make an ark of wood for yourself. [2] 'And I will write on the tablets the words that were on the former tablets which you shattered, and you shall put them in the ark.'

Circumcise Your Heart

Deu 10:12-13 LSB - [12] "So now, Israel, what does Yahweh your God ask from you, but to fear Yahweh your God, to walk in all His ways and love Him, and to serve Yahweh your God with all your heart and with all your soul, [13] [and] to keep the commandments of Yahweh and His statutes which I am commanding you today for your good?

Deu 10:16 LSB - [16] "So circumcise your heart, and stiffen your neck no longer.

Rom 2:28-29 LSB - [28] For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh. [29] But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God.

Col 2:11 LSB - [11] in whom you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh, in the circumcision of Christ,

Deu 10:19 LSB - [19] "So show love for the sojourner, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.

Deu 10:20-21 LSB - [20] "Yahweh your God you shall fear; Him you shall serve, and to Him you shall cling, and by His name you shall swear. [21] "He is your praise, and He is your God, who has done these great and fearsome things for you which your eyes have seen.

Love and Serve Yahweh

Deu 11:1 LSB - [1] "You shall therefore love Yahweh your God, and keep His charge, His statutes, His judgments, and His commandments all [your] days.

Deu 11:2, 7 LSB - [2] "So know this day that I [am] not [speaking] with your sons who have not known and who have not seen the discipline of Yahweh your God--His greatness, His strong hand and His outstretched arm, ... [7] but your own eyes have seen all the great work of Yahweh which He did.

1Jo 2:12-14 LSB -
[12] I am writing to you, little children, because your sins have been forgiven you for His name's sake.
[13] I am writing to you, fathers, because you have known Him who has been from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I have written to you, children, because you have known the Father.
[14] I have written to you, fathers, because you have known Him who has been from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.

Deu 11:18-20 LSB - [18] "You shall therefore place these words of mine on your heart and on your soul; and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as phylacteries between your eyes. [19] "And you shall teach them to your sons, speaking of them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road and when you lie down and when you rise up. [20] "And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates,

A Blessing and a Curse

Deu 11:29 LSB - [29] "And it will be, when Yahweh your God brings you into the land where you are entering to possess it, that you shall set the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal.

Yahweh’s Chosen Place of Worship

Deu 12:5-6 LSB - [5] "But you shall seek [Yahweh] at the place which Yahweh your God will choose from all your tribes, to establish His name there for His dwelling, and there you shall come. [6] "And there you shall bring your burnt offerings, your sacrifices, your tithes, the contribution of your hand, your votive offerings, your freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your herd and of your flock.

Deu 12:11 LSB - [11] Then it will be that the place in which Yahweh your God will choose for His name to dwell, there you shall bring all that I am commanding you: your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes and the contribution of your hand, and all your choice votive offerings which you will vow to Yahweh.

Deu 12:15 LSB - [15] "However, you may sacrifice and eat meat within any of your gates, whatever you desire, according to the blessing of Yahweh your God which He has given you; the unclean and the clean may eat of it, as of the gazelle and the deer.

Deuteronomy 7-9 - Do Not Forget Yahweh Your God

Devote the Nations to Destruction

Deu 7:5-6 LSB - [5] "But thus you shall do to them: you shall tear down their altars and shatter their [sacred] pillars and cut their Asherim in pieces and burn their graven images with fire. [6] "For you are a holy people to Yahweh your God; Yahweh your God has chosen you to be a people for His own treasured possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.

Deu 7:7-8 LSB - [7] "Yahweh did not set His affection on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any of the peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples, [8] but because Yahweh loved you and kept the oath which He swore to your fathers, Yahweh brought you out with a strong hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

Yahweh’s Covenant Blessings

Deu 7:12-13 LSB - [12] "Then it will be, because you listen to these judgments and keep and do them, that Yahweh your God will keep with you His covenant and His lovingkindness which He swore to your fathers. [13] "And He will love you and bless you and multiply you; He will also bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, your grain and your new wine and your oil, the increase of your herd and the young of your flock, in the land which He swore to your fathers to give you.

Do Not Forget Yahweh Your God

Deu 8:2 LSB - [2] "And you shall remember all the way which Yahweh your God has led you in the wilderness these forty years, that He might humble you, testing you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not.

Deu 8:3 LSB - [3] "And He humbled you and let you be hungry and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of Yahweh.

Deu 8:11-14 LSB - [11] "Beware lest you forget Yahweh your God by not keeping His commandments and His judgments and His statutes which I am commanding you today; [12] lest you eat and are satisfied and build good houses and live [in them], [13] and your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and gold multiply, and all that you have multiplies, [14] and your heart becomes lifted up and you forget Yahweh your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

Deu 8:18 LSB - [18] "But you shall remember Yahweh your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, that He may confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as [it is] this day.

Israel Provoked Yahweh

Deu 9:4 LSB - [4] "Do not say in your heart when Yahweh your God has driven them out before you, saying, 'Because of my righteousness Yahweh has brought me in to possess this land,' but [it is] because of the wickedness of these nations [that] Yahweh is dispossessing them before you.

Deu 9:7 LSB - [7] "Remember, do not forget how you provoked Yahweh your God to wrath in the wilderness; from the day that you went out of the land of Egypt until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against Yahweh.

Deuteronomy 4-6 - The Commandment to Love Yahweh

Keep the Commandments of Yahweh

Deu 4:2 LSB - [2] "You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of Yahweh your God which I am commanding you.

Rev 22:18-19 LSB - [18] I bear witness to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book. [19] And if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book.

Deu 4:3-4 LSB - [3] "Your eyes have seen what Yahweh has done in the case of Baal-peor, for all the men who walked after Baal-peor, Yahweh your God has destroyed them from among you. [4] "But you who clung to Yahweh your God are alive today, every one of you.

Deu 4:7 LSB - [7] "For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as is Yahweh our God whenever we call on Him?

Deu 4:10 LSB - [10] "[Remember] the day you stood before Yahweh your God at Horeb, when Yahweh said to me, 'Assemble the people to Me, that I may cause them to hear My words so they may learn to fear Me all the days they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children.'

The Ten Commandments Repeated

Deu 5:2-5 LSB - [2] "Yahweh our God cut a covenant with us at Horeb. [3] "Yahweh did not cut this covenant with our fathers, but with us, [with] all those of us alive here today. [4] "Yahweh spoke to you face to face at the mountain from the midst of the fire. [5] I was standing between Yahweh and you at that time, to declare to you the word of Yahweh; for you were afraid because of the fire and did not go up the mountain. He said,

Deu 5:22 LSB - [22] "These words Yahweh spoke to all your assembly at the mountain from the midst of the fire, [of] the cloud and [of] the dense gloom, with a great voice, and He added no more. He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me.

The Commandment to Love Yahweh

Deu 6:1-2 LSB - [1] "Now this is the commandment, the statutes and the judgments, which Yahweh your God has commanded [me] to teach you, that you might do [it] in the land where you are going over to possess it, [2] so that you and your son and your grandson might fear Yahweh your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I am commanding you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be prolonged.

Deu 6:4-5 LSB - [4] "Hear, O Israel! Yahweh is our God, Yahweh is one! [5] "You shall love Yahweh your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

Deu 6:6-9 LSB - [6] "These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. [7] "You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall speak of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. [8] "You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as phylacteries between your eyes. [9] "You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Deuteronomy 1-3 - Wanderings in the Wilderness

Israel from Seir to Kadesh-barnea

Deu 1:2 LSB - [2] It is eleven days' [journey] from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-barnea.

Deu 1:5 LSB - [5] Across the Jordan in the land of Moab, Moses undertook to expound this law, saying,

Deu 1:34-36 LSB - [34] "Then Yahweh heard the sound of your words, and He was angry and swore [an oath], saying, [35] 'Not one of these men, this evil generation, shall see the good land which I swore to give your fathers, [36] except Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and to him and to his sons I will give the land on which he has set foot, because he has followed Yahweh fully.'

Deu 1:43-44 LSB - [43] "So I spoke to you, but you would not listen. Instead you rebelled against the command of Yahweh and acted presumptuously and went up into the hill country. [44] "And the Amorites who lived in that hill country came out to meet you and pursued you as bees do and crushed you from Seir to Hormah.

Wanderings in the Wilderness

Deu 2:7 LSB - [7] "For Yahweh your God has blessed you in all the work of your hand; He has known your wanderings through this great wilderness. These forty years Yahweh your God has been with you; you have not lacked a thing."'

Deu 2:14-15 LSB - [14] "Now the time that it took for us to come from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed over the brook Zered was thirty-eight years, until all the generation of the men of war came to an end from within the camp, as Yahweh had sworn to them. [15] "Moreover the hand of Yahweh was against them, to bring them into confusion from within the camp until they all came to an end.

Deu 2:30 LSB - [30] "But Sihon king of Heshbon was not willing for us to pass through his land, for Yahweh your God stiffened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, in order to give him over into your hand, as [he is] today.

1. I want Jesus to walk with me.
I want Jesus to walk with me.
All along my pilgrim journey,
I want Jesus to walk with me.

2. In my trials, walk with me.
In my trials, walk with me.
When the shades of life are falling,
I want Jesus to walk with me.

3. In my sorrows, walk with me.
In my sorrows, walk with me.
When my heart within is aching.
I want Jesus to walk with me.

4. In my troubles, walk with me.
In my troubles, walk with me.
When my life becomes a burden,
I want Jesus to walk with me.

Israel Takes Possession of the Land

Deu 3:21-22 LSB - [21] "And I commanded Joshua at that time, saying, 'Your eyes have seen all that Yahweh your God has done to these two kings; so Yahweh shall do to all the kingdoms into which you are about to cross. [22] 'Do not fear them, for Yahweh your God is the one fighting for you.'

Moses Pleads to Cross the Jordan

Deu 3:24-26 LSB - [24] 'O Lord Yahweh, You have begun to show Your slave Your greatness and Your strong hand; for what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do such works and mighty acts as Yours? [25] 'Let me, I pray, cross over and see the good land that is beyond the Jordan, that good hill country and Lebanon.' [26] "But Yahweh was angry with me on your account and would not listen to me; and Yahweh said to me, 'Enough! Speak to Me no more of this matter.

1 Thessalonians 1-5 - The Dead in Christ Will Rise

Thanksgiving

1Th 1:2-5 LSB -
[2] We give thanks to God always for all of you, making mention [of you] in our prayers;
[3] remembering without ceasing your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ before our God and Father,
[4] knowing, brothers beloved by God, your election,
[5] for our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full assurance; just as you know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake.

Entrusted with the Gospel

1Th 2:2 LSB - [2] but after we had already suffered and been mistreated in Philippi, as you know, we had the boldness in our God to speak to you the gospel of God amid much struggle.

1Th 2:13 LSB - [13] And for this reason we also thank God without ceasing that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted [it] not [as] the word of men, but [for] what it really is, the word of God, which also is at work in you who believe.

Timothy’s Good Report

1Th 3:2 LSB - [2] and we sent Timothy, our brother and God's fellow worker in the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you as to your faith,

1Th 3:6-8 LSB - [6] But now that Timothy has come to us from you, and has brought us good news of your faith and love, and that you always remember us kindly, longing to see us just as we also long to see you, [7] for this reason, brothers, in all our distress and affliction we were comforted about you through your faith; [8] for now we [really] live, if you stand firm in the Lord.

1Th 3:9-10 LSB - [9] For what thanks can we render to God for you in return for all the joy with which we rejoice before our God because of you, [10] as we night and day keep praying most earnestly that we may see your face, and may complete what is lacking in your faith?

Sanctification and Love

1Th 4:7 LSB - [7] For God did not call us to impurity, but in sanctification.

1Th 4:9-10 LSB - [9] Now concerning love of the brothers, you have no need for [anyone] to write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another, [10] for indeed you do practice it toward all the brothers who are in all Macedonia. But we urge you, brothers, to excel still more,

The Dead in Christ Will Rise

1Th 4:16-17 LSB - [16] For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of [the] archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. [17] Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.

John Logan (1748-1788)

Take comfort, Christians, when your friends
in Jesus fall asleep;
their better being never ends;
why then dejected weep?

Why inconsolable, as those
to whom no hope is giv’n?
Death is the messenger of peace,
and calls the soul to heav’n.

As Jesus dy’d, and rose again
victorious from the dead;
so his disciples rise, and reign
with their triumphant Head.

The time draws nigh, when from the clouds
Christ shall with shouts descend,
and the last trumpet’s awful voice
the heavens and earth shall rend.

Then they who live shall changed be,
and they who sleep shall wake;
the graves shall yield their ancient charge,
and earth’s foundations shake.

The saints of God, from death set free,
with joy shall mount on high;
the heav’nly hosts with praises loud
shall meet them in the sky,

Together to their Father’s house
with joyful hearts they go;
and dwell for ever with the Lord,
beyond the reach of woe.

A few short years of evil past,
we reach the happy shore,
where death-divided friends at last
shall meet, to part no more.

The Day of the Lord

1Th 5:2 LSB - [2] For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night.

1Th 5:8-10 LSB -
[8] But since we are of [the] day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation.
[9] For God has not appointed us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, [10] who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him.

Admonishment and Instruction

1Th 5:16-19 LSB - [16] Rejoice always; [17] pray without ceasing; [18] in everything give thanks, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. [19] Do not quench the Spirit;

1Th 5:23 LSB - [23] Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely, and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Numbers 34-36 - Cities of Refuge

Apportioning Canaan

Num 34:1-3 LSB - [1] Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, [2] "Command the sons of Israel and say to them, 'When you enter the land of Canaan, this is the land that shall fall to you as an inheritance, [even the] land of Canaan according to its borders. [3] 'And your southern sector shall extend from the wilderness of Zin along the side of Edom, and your southern border shall extend from the end of the Salt Sea eastward.

Cities for the Levites

Num 35:2-3 LSB - [2] "Command the sons of Israel that they give to the Levites from the inheritance of their possession cities to live in; and you shall give to the Levites pasture lands around the cities. [3] "And the cities shall be theirs to live in; and their pasture lands shall be for their cattle and for their herds and for all their beasts.

Cities of Refuge

Num 35:6 LSB - [6] "And the cities which you shall give to the Levites [shall be] the six cities of refuge, which you shall give for the manslayer to flee to; and in addition to them you shall give forty-two cities.

Num 35:34 LSB - [34] 'And you shall not defile the land in which you live, in the midst of which I dwell; for I Yahweh am dwelling in the midst of the sons of Israel.'"

The City of Refuge

Author: Fanny J. Crosby

1. O, guilty one, haste to the city of refuge,
Where mercy awaits thee, so boundless and free;
O haste with thy burden of sin and of sorrow;
Thy loving Redeemer is waiting for thee.

Chorus:
O fly to the refuge!
To the refuge sure and free;
With thy sin and sorrow;
Jesus waits for thee.

2. O, guilty one, haste! for the day beams are fading,
Afar on the desert; say, why wilt thou roam?
The arms of the Saviour will gladly enfold thee;
He longs with forgiveness to welcome thee home. [Chorus]

3. O, weary one, haste! for the night clouds pursue thee;
How darkly they frown on the cold mountain's brow;
The voice of the tempest is wailing around thee,
And none but the Saviour can shelter thee now. [Chorus]

Inheritance Through Marriage

Num 36:8-9 LSB - [8] "And every daughter who comes into possession of an inheritance of any tribe of the sons of Israel shall be wife to one of the family of the tribe of her father, so that the sons of Israel each may possess the inheritance of his fathers. [9] "Thus no inheritance shall be transferred from one tribe to another tribe, for the tribes of the sons of Israel shall each hold to his own inheritance."

Numbers 31-33 - Statutes of Possessing the Land

Vengeance on Midian

Num 31:1-2 LSB - [1] Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, [2] "Take full vengeance for the sons of Israel on the Midianites; afterward you will be gathered to your people."

Num 25:17-18 LSB - [17] "Be hostile to the Midianites and strike them, [18] for they have been hostile to you with their deceptive tricks, with which they have deceived you in the affair of Peor and in the affair of Cozbi, the daughter of the leader of Midian, their sister who was slain on the day of the plague because of Peor."

Division of the Loot

Num 31:26-27 LSB - [26] "You and Eleazar the priest and the heads of the fathers' [households] of the congregation take a count of the loot that was captured, both of man and of animal; [27] and divide the loot between the warriors who went out to battle and all the congregation.

Num 31:28-29 LSB - [28] "And you shall exact a levy for Yahweh from the men of war who went out to battle, one in five hundred of the persons and of the cattle and of the donkeys and of the sheep; [29] take it from their half and give it to Eleazar the priest, as a contribution to Yahweh.

Num 31:30 LSB - [30] "And from the sons of Israel's half, you shall take one drawn out of every fifty of the persons, of the cattle, of the donkeys, and of the sheep, from all the animals, and give them to the Levites who keep charge of the tabernacle of Yahweh."

Reuben and Gad Possess Gilead

Num 32:5 LSB - [5] And they said, "If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants as a possession; do not take us across the Jordan."

Num 32:29-30 LSB - [29] And Moses said to them, "If the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben, everyone who is armed for battle, will cross with you over the Jordan in the presence of Yahweh, and the land is subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession; [30] but if they will not cross over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan."

The Journey from Egypt to Jordan

Num 33:1-2 LSB - [1] These are the journeys of the sons of Israel, by which they came out from the land of Egypt by their armies, by the hand of Moses and Aaron. [2] And Moses wrote down their starting places according to their journeys by the command of Yahweh, and these are their journeys according to their starting places.

Num 33:3-5 LSB - [3] They journeyed from Rameses in the first month, on the fifteenth day of the first month; on the next day after the Passover the sons of Israel started out with a high hand in the sight of all the Egyptians, [4] but the Egyptians were burying all their firstborn whom Yahweh had struck down among them. Yahweh had also executed judgments on their gods. [5] Then the sons of Israel journeyed from Rameses and camped in Succoth.

Num 33:49 LSB - [49] They camped by the Jordan, from Beth-jeshimoth as far as Abel-shittim in the plains of Moab.

Statutes of Possessing the Land

Num 33:51-53 LSB - [51] "Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, 'When you cross over the Jordan into the land of Canaan, [52] then you shall dispossess all the inhabitants of the land from before you and destroy all their carved stones and destroy all their molten images and demolish all their high places; [53] and you shall take possession of the land and inhabit it, for I have given the land to you to possess it.

Num 33:55-56 LSB - [55] 'But if you do not dispossess the inhabitants of the land from before you, then it will be that those whom you let remain of them [will become] as pricks in your eyes and as thorns in your sides, and they will trouble you in the land which you inhabit. [56] 'And it will be as I plan to do to them, so I will do to you.'"

Daily Offerings

Num 28:2-8 LSB -
[2] "Command the sons of Israel and say to them, 'You shall be careful to bring near My offering, My food for My offerings by fire, of a soothing aroma to Me, at their appointed time.'
[3] "And you shall say to them, 'This is the offering by fire which you shall bring near to Yahweh: two male lambs one year old without blemish [as] a continual burnt offering every day.
[4] 'You shall offer the one lamb in the morning, and the other lamb you shall offer at twilight
[5] also a tenth of an ephah of fine flour for a grain offering, mixed with a fourth of a hin of beaten oil. [6] 'It is a continual burnt offering which was ordained in Mount Sinai as a soothing aroma, an offering by fire to Yahweh.
[7] 'Then the drink offering with it [shall be] a fourth of a hin for each lamb, in the holy place you shall pour out a drink offering of strong drink to Yahweh.
[8] 'And the other lamb you shall offer at twilight; as the grain offering of the morning and as its drink offering, you shall offer it, an offering by fire, a soothing aroma to Yahweh.

1Th 5:16-18 LSB - [16] Rejoice always; [17] pray without ceasing; [18] in everything give thanks, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.

Take My Life, and Let It Be

Author: Frances Ridley Havergal (1874)

1 Take my life and let it be
consecrated, Lord, to thee.
Take my moments and my days;
let them flow in endless praise,
let them flow in endless praise.

2 Take my hands and let them move
at the impulse of thy love.
Take my feet and let them be
swift and beautiful for thee,
swift and beautiful for thee.

3 Take my voice and let me sing
always, only, for my King.
Take my lips and let them be
filled with messages from thee,
filled with messages from thee.

4 Take my silver and my gold;
not a mite would I withhold.
Take my intellect and use
every power as thou shalt choose,
every power as thou shalt choose.

5 Take my will and make it thine;
it shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart it is thine own;
it shall be thy royal throne,
it shall be thy royal throne.

6 Take my love; my Lord, I pour
at thy feet its treasure store.
Take myself, and I will be
ever, only, all for thee,
ever, only, all for thee.

The Various Offerings of the Seventh Month

Num 29:1-2 LSB - [1] 'Now in the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall also have a holy convocation; you shall do no laborious work. It will be to you a day for blowing trumpets. [2] 'And you shall offer a burnt offering as a soothing aroma to Yahweh: one bull from the herd, one ram, [and] seven male lambs one year old without blemish;

Num 29:7-8 LSB - [7] 'Then on the tenth day of this seventh month you shall have a holy convocation, and you shall humble yourselves; you shall not do any work. [8] 'And you shall bring near a burnt offering to Yahweh [as] a soothing aroma: one bull from the herd, one ram, seven male lambs one year old, having them without blemish;

Num 29:12-13 LSB - [12] 'Then on the fifteenth day of the seventh month you shall have a holy convocation; you shall do no laborious work, and you shall celebrate a feast to Yahweh for seven days. [13] 'And you shall bring near a burnt offering, an offering by fire as a soothing aroma to Yahweh: thirteen bulls from the herd, two rams, fourteen male lambs one year old, which are without blemish;

Num 29:17 LSB - [17] 'Then on the second day: twelve bulls from the herd, two rams, fourteen male lambs one year old without blemish;

Num 29:20 LSB - [20] 'Then on the third day: eleven bulls, two rams, fourteen male lambs one year old without blemish;

Num 29:32 LSB - [32] 'Then on the seventh day: seven bulls, two rams, fourteen male lambs one year old without blemish;

Num 29:35-36 LSB - [35] 'On the eighth day you shall have a solemn assembly; you shall do no laborious work. [36] 'But you shall bring near a burnt offering, an offering by fire, as a soothing aroma to Yahweh: one bull, one ram, seven male lambs one year old without blemish;

The Statutes for Vows

Num 30:2 LSB - [2] "If a man makes a vow to Yahweh or swears an oath to bind himself with a binding obligation, he shall not violate his word; he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.

Num 30:5 LSB - [5] "But if her father should forbid her on the day he hears [of it], none of her vows or her obligations by which she has bound herself shall stand; and Yahweh will pardon her because her father had forbidden her.

Num 30:8 LSB - [8] "But if, on the day her husband hears [of it], he forbids her, then he shall annul her vow which she is under and the rash statement of her lips by which she has bound herself; and Yahweh will pardon her.

Num 30:9 LSB - [9] "But the vow of a widow or of a divorced woman, everything by which she has bound herself, shall stand against her.

Num 30:16 LSB - [16] These are the statutes which Yahweh commanded Moses, [as] between a man and his wife, [and as] between a father and his daughter, [while she is] in her youth in her father's house.

Numbers 25-27 - Jealous for his God

Israel Sacrifices to Baal

Num 25:3 LSB - [3] So Israel joined themselves to Baal of Peor, and the anger of Yahweh burned against Israel.

Hos 9:10 LSB - [10] I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness; I saw your fathers as the earliest fruit on the fig tree in its first [season]. [But] they came to Baal-peor and devoted themselves to shame, And they became as detestable as that which they loved.

Num 25:7-9 LSB - [7] And Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, so he arose from the midst of the congregation and took a spear in his hand, [8] and he went after the man of Israel into the tent and pierced both of them through, the man of Israel and the woman, through the body. Then the plague on the sons of Israel was checked. [9] So those who died by the plague were 24,000.

The Jealousy of Phinehas

Num 25:10-13 LSB - [10] Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, [11] "Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned away My wrath from the sons of Israel in that he was jealous with My jealousy among them, so that I did not consume the sons of Israel in My jealousy. [12] "Therefore say, 'Behold, I give him My covenant of peace; [13] and it shall be for him and his seed after him, a covenant of a perpetual priesthood, because he was jealous for his God and made atonement for the sons of Israel.'"

Census of the Sons of Israel

Num 26:9-11 LSB - [9] And the sons of Eliab: Nemuel and Dathan and Abiram. These are the Dathan and Abiram who were called [upon] by the congregation, who contended against Moses and against Aaron in the congregation of Korah, when they contended against Yahweh, [10] and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up along with Korah, when that congregation died, when the fire consumed 250 men, so that they became a warning. [11] The sons of Korah, however, did not die.

Psa 106:17 LSB - [17] The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, And covered up the company of Abiram.

Jde 1:4, 11 LSB - [4] For certain persons have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. ... [11] Woe to them! For they have gone the way of Cain, and for pay they have poured themselves into the error of Balaam, and perished in the rebellion of Korah.

Psa 42:1 LSB - [1] For the choir director. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. As the deer pants for the water brooks, So my soul pants for You, O God.

Num 26:59 LSB - [59] And the name of Amram's wife was Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt; and she bore to Amram: Aaron and Moses and their sister Miriam.

The Daughters of Zelophehad

Num 27:6-7 LSB - [6] Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, [7] "The daughters of Zelophehad are right in [their] statements. You shall surely give them a possession for an inheritance among their father's brothers, and you shall have the inheritance of their father pass on to them.

Num 27:12-14 LSB - [12] Then Yahweh said to Moses, "Go up to this mountain of Abarim, and see the land which I have given to the sons of Israel. [13] "So [when] you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother was, [14] for in the wilderness of Zin, during the strife of the congregation, you rebelled against My command to treat Me as holy before their eyes at the water." (These are the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.)

Moses Commissions Joshua

Num 27:18-19 LSB - [18] So Yahweh said to Moses, "Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him; [19] and have him stand before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation, and commission him in their sight.

Numbers 22-24 - A star shall come forth from Jacob

Balak Sends for Balaam

Num 22:7 LSB - [7] So the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian went away with the [fees for] divination in their hand; and they came to Balaam and spoke Balak's words to him.

Num 22:20-21 LSB - [20] And God came to Balaam at night and said to him, "If the men have come to call you, rise up [and] go with them; but only the word which I speak to you shall you do." [21] So Balaam arose in the morning and saddled his donkey and went with the leaders of Moab.

Balaam’s Donkey and the Angel

Num 22:22 LSB - [22] But God was angry because he was going, so the angel of Yahweh took his stand in the way as an adversary against him. Now he was riding on his donkey, and his two young men were with him.

Num 22:31 LSB - [31] Then Yahweh opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of Yahweh standing in the way with his drawn sword in his hand; and he bowed his head down and prostrated himself to the ground.

Num 22:41 LSB - [41] Then it happened in the morning that Balak took Balaam and brought him up to the high places of Baal, and he saw from there the end of [the camp] of the people.

Yahweh Speaks Through Balaam

Num 23:5 LSB - [5] Then Yahweh put a word in Balaam's mouth and said, "Return to Balak, and you shall speak thus."

Balaam’s Discourse

Num 23:16 LSB - [16] Then Yahweh met Balaam and put a word in his mouth and said, "Return to Balak, and thus you shall speak."

Spirit of God Comes upon Balaam

Num 24:1-2 LSB - [1] And Balaam saw that it was good in the eyes of Yahweh to bless Israel, so he did not go as at other times to encounter omens, but he set his face toward the wilderness. [2] And Balaam lifted up his eyes and saw Israel dwelling tribe by tribe; and the Spirit of God came upon him.

Oracle of Balaam

Num 24:17 LSB - [17] "I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near; A star shall come forth from Jacob, A scepter shall rise from Israel, And shall crush through the forehead of Moab, And tear down all the sons of Sheth.

What star is this, with beams so bright, More lovely than the noon-day light?

Translator: John Chandler; Author: Charles Coffin (1736)

1. What star is this, with beams so bright,
Which shame the sun’s less radiant light?
’Tis sent t’ announce a new-born King,
Glad tidings of our God to bring.
2. ’Tis now fulfilled what God decreed:
“From Jacob shall a star proceed”;
And lo! the eastern sages stand
To read in heav’n the Lord’s command.
3. While outward signs the star displays,
An inward light the Lord conveys,
And urges them, with force benign,
To seek the Giver of the sign.
4. Oh, while the star of heav’nly grace
Invites us, Lord, to seek thy face,
May we no more that grace repel,
Or quench that light, which shines so well!
5. To God the Father, God the Son,
And Holy Spirit, Three in One,
May every tongue and nation raise
An endless song of thankful praise!

Numbers 19-21 - Bronze Serpent

Statute of the Red Heifer

Num 19:5 LSB - [5] 'Then the heifer shall be burned in his sight; its hide and its flesh and its blood, with its refuse, shall be burned.

Num 19:9 LSB - [9] 'Now a man who is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer and deposit them outside the camp in a clean place, and the congregation of the sons of Israel shall keep it as water to remove impurity; it is purification from sin.

Num 19:17-19 LSB - [17] 'Then for the unclean [person] they shall take some of the ashes of the burnt purification from sin and flowing water shall be added to them in a vessel. [18] 'And a clean person shall take hyssop and dip [it] in the water and sprinkle [it] on the tent and on all the furnishings and on the persons who were there and on the one who touched the bone or the one slain or the one dying [naturally] or the grave. [19] 'Then the clean [person] shall sprinkle on the unclean on the third day and on the seventh day; and on the seventh day he shall purify him from uncleanness, and he shall wash his clothes and bathe [himself] in water and shall be clean by evening.

There is a fountain filled with blood Drawn from Emmanuel's veins (Cowper)

Author: William Cowper (1772)

1 There is a fountain filled with blood
Drawn from Immanuel’s veins;
And sinners, plunged beneath that flood,
Lose all their guilty stains:
Lose all their guilty stains,
Lose all their guilty stains;
And sinners, plunged beneath that flood,
Lose all their guilty stains.

2 The dying thief rejoiced to see
That fountain in his day;
And there may I, though vile as he,
Wash all my sins away:
Wash all my sins away,
Wash all my sins away;
And there may I, though vile as he,
Wash all my sins away.

3 Dear dying Lamb, Thy precious blood
Shall never lose its power,
Till all the ransomed ones of God
Be saved, to sin no more:
Be saved, to sin no more,
Be saved, to sin no more;
Till all the ransomed ones of God,
Be saved to sin no more.

4 E’er since by faith I saw the stream
Thy flowing wounds supply,
Redeeming love has been my theme,
And shall be till I die:
And shall be till I die,
And shall be till I die;
Redeeming love has been my theme,
And shall be till I die.

5 When this poor lisping, stammering tongue
Lies silent in the grave,
Then in a nobler, sweeter song,
I’ll sing Thy power to save:
I’ll sing Thy power to save,
I’ll sing Thy power to save;
Then in a nobler, sweeter song,
I’ll sing Thy power to save.

No Water for the Congregation

Num 20:7-8 LSB - [7] and Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, [8] "Take the rod; and you and your brother Aaron assemble the congregation and speak to the rock before their eyes, that it may yield its water. You shall thus bring forth water for them out of the rock and let the congregation and their beasts drink."

Moses Strikes the Rock

Num 20:11-12 LSB - [11] Then Moses raised high his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod; and water came forth abundantly, and the congregation and their beasts drank. [12] But Yahweh said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you did not believe Me, to treat Me as holy in the sight of the sons of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them."

Speak to the Rock

Author: Albert B. Simpson

1 Fainting in the desert,
Israel’s thousands stand
At the rock of Kadesh.
Hark! the Lord’s command,
Speak to the Rock,
Bid the waters flow,
Strike not its bosom
Opened long ago.
Speak to the Rock,
Till the waters flow.

Speak to the Rock,
Bid the waters flow,
Doubt not the Spirit,
Given long ago;
Take what He waiteth,
Freely to bestow,
Drink till its fulness
All Thy being know.

2 Blessed Rock of Ages,
Thou art open still;
Thy blest Holy Spirit
All our being fill;
Still Thou dost say,
Wherefore struggle so?
Call for the Spirit,
Whisper soft and low,
Speak to the Rock
Bid the waters flow.

3 Oh, for trust more simple,
Fully to believe;
Oh, for hearts more childlike,
Freely to receive;
E’en as a babe,
On its mother’s breast,
So on Thy bosom
Let my spirit rest,
Filled with Thy life,
With Thy blessing blest.

Edom Refuses Passage

Num 20:21-22 LSB - [21] Thus Edom refused to allow Israel to pass through his territory; so Israel turned away from him. [22] Then they set out from Kadesh, and the sons of Israel, the whole congregation, came to Mount Hor.

The Death of Aaron

Num 20:23-24 LSB - [23] And Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron at Mount Hor by the border of the land of Edom, saying, [24] "Aaron will be gathered to his people, for he shall not enter the land which I have given to the sons of Israel because you rebelled against My command at the waters of Meribah.

Num 20:28-29 LSB - [28] And Moses stripped Aaron of his garments and put them on his son Eleazar, and Aaron died there on the mountain top. Then Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain. [29] So all the congregation saw that Aaron breathed his last, and all the house of Israel wept for Aaron thirty days.

Destruction of Canaanite Cities

The Bronze Serpent

Num 21:5-6 LSB - [5] And the people spoke against God and against Moses, "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this miserable food." [6] So Yahweh sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people so that many people of Israel died.

Num 21:9 LSB - [9] And Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on the standard; and it happened, that if a serpent bit any man, when he looked to the bronze serpent, he lived.

Jhn 3:14-15 LSB - [14] "And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; [15] so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life.

Serpent of Brass
Dr. Watts

1 When Israel's grieving tribes complain'd,
With fiery serpents greatly pain'd,
A serpent straight the prophet made
Of molten brass, to view display'd.

2 Around the fainting crowds attend,
To heaven their mournful sighs ascend;
They hope, they look, while from the pole,
Descends a pow'r that makes them whole.

3 But, O, what healing to the heart,
Doth our Redeemer's cross impart!
What life, by faith, our souls receive!
What pleasures do his sorrows give!

4 Still may I view the Saviour's cross,
And other objects count but loss:
Here still be fix'd my feasted eyes,
Enraptur'd with his sacrifice.

5 Jesus the Saviour! balmy name!
Thy worth my tongue would now proclaim;
By thy atonement set me free,
My life, my hope, is all from thee.

Sihon and Og Struck Down

Num 21:34 LSB - [34] But Yahweh said to Moses, "Do not fear him, for I have given him into your hand, and all his people and his land; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon, king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon."
