Primeval History (1:1–11:26)
God’s creation and ordering of heaven and earth (1:1–2:3)
Creation (Gen 2:4–9; Job 38:4–11; Jhn 1:1–5 )
[Gen 1:1 LSB] In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
[Jhn 1:1 LSB] In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
[Heb 1:10 LSB] And, "YOU, LORD, IN THE BEGINNING FOUNDED THE EARTH, AND THE HEAVENS ARE THE WORKS OF YOUR HANDS;
[Psa 33:6 LSB] By the word of Yahweh the heavens were made, And by the breath of His mouth all their host.
[Psa 33:9 LSB] For He spoke, and it was; He commanded, and it stood.
[Gen 1:3 LSB] Then God said, " there be light"; and there was light.
[Gen 1:26 LSB] Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness, so that they will have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."
[Gen 1:27 LSB] And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
[Gen 5:3 LSB] When Adam had lived 130 years, he became the father of [a son] in his own likeness, according to his image, and named him Seth.
[2Co 3:18 LSB] But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.
[2Co 4:4 LSB] in whose case the god of this age has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
[Eph 4:24 LSB] and to put on the new man, which in [the likeness of] God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.
[Col 1:13-15 LSB] Who rescued us from the authority of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
[Col 3:10 LSB] and have put on the new man who is being renewed to a full knowledge according to the image of the One who created him--
[Gen 1:31 LSB] And God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
Earth’s first people (2:4–4:26)
The Generations of the Heavens and the Earth
[Gen 2:7 LSB] Then Yahweh God formed man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and so the man became a living being.
[Job 27:3 LSB]For as long as breath is in me, And the spirit from God is in my nostrils,[Job 33:4 LSB]"The Spirit of God has made me, And the breath of the Almighty gives me life.[Jhn 20:22 LSB]And when He had said this, He breathed on [them] and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.
[Gen 2:23 LSB] Then the man said, "This one finally is bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; This one shall be called Woman, Because this one was taken out of Man."
Adam and Eve Sent Out from the Garden (Rom 5:12–21 )
[Gen 3:9 LSB] Yahweh God called to the man and said to him, "Where are you?"
[Gen 3:10 LSB] And he said, "I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid."
[Gen 3:15 LSB] And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel."[Gen 3:21 LSB] Then Yahweh God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and He clothed them.
[Gen 4:6 LSB] Then Yahweh said to Cain, "Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?[Gen 4:7 LSB] "If you do well, will not [your countenance] be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is lying at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must rule over it."[Gen 4:16 LSB] Then Cain went out from the presence of Yahweh and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.[Gen 4:26 LSB] And to Seth, to him also, a son was born; and he called his name Enosh. Then [men] began to call upon the name of Yahweh.
Adam’s descendants (5:1–6:8)
The Generations of Adam (1Ch 1:1–4; Luk 3:36–38 )
[Gen 5:3 LSB] When Adam had lived 130 years, he became the father of [a son] in his own likeness, according to his image, and named him Seth.
[Gen 5:23 LSB] So all the days of Enoch were 365 years.
[Gen 5:24 LSB] Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.
Noah’s descendants (6:9–9:29)
The Nephilim and the Daughters of Men
[Gen 6:8 LSB] But Noah found favor in the eyes of Yahweh.
The Generations of Noah
[Gen 7:23 LSB] Thus He blotted out every living thing that was upon the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky, and they were blotted out from the earth; and only Noah remained, and those that were with him in the ark.
[Luk 17:26-27 LSB] "And just as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: they were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, they were being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.
The Water Dries Up
[Gen 8:1 LSB] Then God remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the cattle that were with him in the ark; and God caused a wind to pass over the earth, and the water subsided.
Yahweh’s Covenant with Noah
[Gen 8:20 LSB] Then Noah built an altar to Yahweh and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
[Gen 8:21 LSB] And Yahweh smelled the soothing aroma; and Yahweh said to Himself, "I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intent of man's heart is evil from his youth; and I will never again strike down every living thing as I have done.

Yahweh Appears to Abram (Act 7:2–5 )
[Gen 12:1 LSB] And Yahweh said to Abram, "Go forth from your land, And from your kin And from your father's house, To the land which I will show you;
[Gen 12:2 LSB] And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; And so you shall be a blessing;
[Gen 12:3 LSB] And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed."
[Gen 12:4 LSB] So Abram went forth as Yahweh had spoken to him; and Lot went with him. Now Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.
Abram and Sarai in Egypt
Abram and Lot Separate
[Gen 13:17 LSB] "Arise, walk about the land through its length and breadth; for I will give it to you."
[Gen 13:18 LSB] Then Abram moved his tent and came and lived by the oaks of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and there he built an altar to Yahweh.
Kings of the Valley Take Lot
Melchizedek Blesses Abram
[Gen 14:18-20 LSB]
And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; now he was a priest of God Most High. Then he blessed him and said, "Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand." Then he gave him a tenth of all.
Yahweh Cuts a Covenant with Abram (Heb 11:8–10 )
[Gen 15:4 LSB]Then behold, the word of Yahweh came to him, saying, "This one will not be your heir; but one who will come forth from your own body, he shall be your heir."[Gen 15:5 LSB]And He brought him outside and said, "Now look toward the heavens, and number the stars, if you are able to number them." And He said to him, "So shall your seed be."[Gen 15:6 LSB]Then he believed in Yahweh; and He counted it to him as righteousness.
[Rom 4:19-22 LSB]And without becoming weak in faith he contemplated his own body, now as good as dead since he was about a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah's womb;yet, with respect to the promise of God, he did not waver in unbelief but grew strong in faith, giving glory to God,and being fully assured that what God had promised, He was able also to do.Therefore IT WAS ALSO COUNTED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.
Sarai and Hagar
[Gen 16:13 LSB] Then she called the name of Yahweh who spoke to her, "You are a God who sees"; for she said, "Have I even remained alive here after seeing Him?"
[Gen 16:14 LSB] Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
Circumcision, the Sign of the Covenant (Exo 12:43—13:2 )
[Gen 17:10 LSB] "This is My covenant, which you shall keep, between Me and you and your seed after you: every male among you shall be circumcised.
[Gen 17:11 LSB] "And you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be the sign of the covenant between Me and you.
[Jer 4:4 LSB]
Circumcise yourselves to Yahweh
And remove the foreskins of your heart,
Men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem,
Lest My wrath go forth like fire
And burn with none to quench it
Because of the evil of your deeds."
[Rom 4:10-12 LSB]
How then was it counted? While he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while circumcised, but while uncircumcised;
and he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while uncircumcised, so that he might be the father of all who believe without being circumcised, that righteousness might be counted to them,
and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also follow in the steps of the faith of our father Abraham which he had while uncircumcised.
[Phl 3:3 LSB] For we are the circumcision, who worship in the Spirit of God and boast in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh,
Sarah Will Bear Isaac
Yahweh Appears to Abraham (Heb 13:2 )
Yahweh and Abraham Speak About Sodom
[Gen 18:32 LSB] Then he said, "Oh may the Lord not be angry, and I shall speak only this once; suppose ten are found there?" And He said, "I will not destroy [it] on account of the ten."
Yahweh Destroys Sodom and Gomorrah
[Gen 19:24-26 LSB] 24 And Yahweh rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from Yahweh out of heaven, 25 and He overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. 26 Then his wife, from behind him, looked [back], and she became a pillar of salt.
[Luk 17:29-33 LSB] 29 but on the day that Lot went out from Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. 30 "It will be just the same on the day that the Son of Man is revealed. 31 "On that day, the one who is on the housetop and whose goods are in the house must not go down to take them out, and likewise the one who is in the field must not turn back. 32 "Remember Lot's wife. 33 "Whoever seeks to keep his life will lose it, and whoever loses [his life] will preserve it.

Abraham Lies to Abimelech
Isaac Is Born (Heb 11:11 )
[Gen 21:6-7 LSB] 6 And Sarah said, "God has made laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh with me." 7 And she said, "Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne [him] a son in his old age."
[Heb 11:11-12 LSB] 11 By faith even Sarah herself received ability to conceive, even beyond the proper time of life, since she regarded Him faithful who had promised. 12 Therefore there were born even of one man, and him as good as dead at that, [as many] AS THE STARS OF HEAVEN IN NUMBER, AND INNUMERABLE AS THE SAND WHICH IS BY THE SEASHORE.
Sarah Sends Hagar Away (Gal 4:21–30 )
[Gen 21:10 LSB] 10 Therefore she said to Abraham, "Drive out this maidservant and her son! The son of this maidservant shall not be an heir with my son, with Isaac."
[Gal 4:23, 28-31 LSB]
23 But the son by the servant-woman had been born according to the flesh, while the son by the free woman through the promise. ...
28 And you brothers, in accordance with Isaac, are children of promise.
29 But as at that time he who was born according to the flesh was persecuting him [who was born] according to the Spirit, so it is now also.
30 But what does the Scripture say? "CAST OUT THE SERVANT-WOMAN AND HER SON, FOR THE SON OF THE SERVANT-WOMAN SHALL NOT BE AN HEIR WITH THE SON OF THE FREE WOMAN."
31 So then, brothers, we are not children of a servant-woman, but of the free woman.
A Covenant with Abimelech

Hebrews 11:17-19 LSB — By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was offering up his only son, to whom it was said, “IN ISAAC YOUR SEED SHALL BE CALLED.” He considered that God is able to raise people even from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he also received him back.

Esau Sells His Birthright
[Gen 25:34 LSB] 34 So Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew; and he ate and drank and rose and went away. Thus Esau despised his birthright.
[Heb 12:14-17 LSB] 14 Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no one will see the Lord,
15 seeing to it that no one falls short of the grace of God; that no ROOT OF BITTERNESS SPRINGING UP CAUSES TROUBLE, and by it many be defiled;
16 that [also there be] no sexually immoral or godless person like Esau, who sold his own birthright for a [single] meal.
17 For you know that even afterwards, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought for it with tears.

John MacArthur: head of his staff. According to Gen. 47:31, Jacob leaned upon his "bed." The two words (staff, bed) in Hebrew have exactly the same consonants. Old Testament Hebrew manuscripts were copied without vowels. Later Hebrew manuscripts, between the sixth and ninth centuries a.d., took the word as "bed." The lxx, in the third century b.c., rendered it "staff," which seems more likely although both could be factual.
