 Introduction to Micah

1. Superscription (1:1)

[Mic 1:1 LSB] 1 The word of Yahweh which came [to] Micah of Moresheth in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, [and] Hezekiah, kings of Judah, which he beheld concerning Samaria and Jerusalem.

2. The Announcement of Judgment on Israel and Judah (1:2–2:13)

[Mic 1:5 LSB] 5 All this is for the transgression of Jacob And for the sins of the house of Israel. What is the transgression of Jacob? Is it not Samaria? What is the high place of Judah? Is it not Jerusalem?

[Mic 2:12 LSB] 12 "I will surely assemble all of you, Jacob; I will surely gather the remnant of Israel. I will put them together like sheep in the fold; Like a flock in the midst of its pasture They will be noisy with men.

[Mic 2:13 LSB] 13 "The breaker goes up before them; They break out, pass through the gate, and go out by it. So their king goes on before them, And Yahweh at their head.

3. The Present Injustice and the Future Prospect of Just Rule in Jerusalem (3:1–5:15)

[Mic 3:4 LSB] 4 Then they will cry out to Yahweh, But He will not answer them. Instead, He will hide His face from them at that time Because they have practiced evil deeds.

The Law Will Go Forth from Zion (cf. Isa 2:2–4 )

[Mic 4:2 LSB] 2 And many nations will come and say, "Come and let us go up to the mountain of Yahweh And to the house of the God of Jacob, That He may instruct us from His ways And that we may walk in His paths." For from Zion will go forth the law, And the word of Yahweh from Jerusalem.

The Ruler Will Come from Bethlehem

[Mic 5:2 LSB]

"But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, [Too] little to be among the clans of Judah, From you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from everlasting, From the ancient days."

[Mic 5:3 LSB]

Therefore He will give them [up] until the time When she who is in childbirth has borne a child. Then the remainder of His brothers Will return to the sons of Israel.

[Mic 5:4 LSB]

And He will stand and shepherd [His flock] In the strength of Yahweh, In the majesty of the name of Yahweh His God. And they will remain Because at that time He will be great To the ends of the earth.

4. The Lord’s Indictment and Restoration of His People (6:1–7:20)

What Yahweh Requires

He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does Yahweh require of you But to do justice, to love lovingkindness, And to walk humbly with your God?

There Is No Upright Person

Yahweh Is a Light for Me

[Mic 7:8 LSB]

Do not be glad over me, O my enemy.
Though I fall I will rise;
Though I inhabit the darkness, Yahweh is a light for me.

[Mic 7:9 LSB]

I will bear the rage of Yahweh
Because I have sinned against Him,
Until He pleads my case and does justice for me.
He will bring me out to the light,
[And] I will see His righteousness.

[Mic 7:18 LSB]

Who is a God like You, who forgives iniquity
And passes over the transgression of the remnant of His inheritance?
He does not hold fast to His anger forever
Because He delights in lovingkindness.

[Mic 7:19 LSB]

He will again have compassion on us;
He will subdue our iniquities.
And You will cast all their sins Into the depths of the sea.

You will give truth to Jacob
[And] lovingkindness to Abraham,
Which You swore to our fathers
From the days of old.
