Leviticus 1 - Burnt Offering

[Leviticus 1:3 ESV] “If his offering is a burnt offering from the herd, he shall offer a male without blemish. He shall bring it to the entrance of the tent of meeting, that he may be accepted before the LORD.

[Leviticus 1:4 ESV] He shall lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him.

[Leviticus 1:5 ESV] Then he shall kill the bull before the LORD, and Aaron’s sons the priests shall bring the blood and throw the blood against the sides of the altar that is at the entrance of the tent of meeting.

[Leviticus 1:6 ESV] Then he shall flay the burnt offering and cut it into pieces,

When offering a burnt offering, the man who was offering had several important tasks he could not delegate to a priest.

First he had to bring a bull without blemish. Second, he had to lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering. Third, he had to kill the bull before the LORD. Finally, he had to flay the burnt offering and cut it into pieces.

Burnt offering ʿōlâ "literally means ‘that which ascends,’ and refers, no doubt, to the ascent of the transformed substance of the sacrifice in fire and smoke, as to God. The central idea of this sacrifice, then, as gathered from its name and confirmed by its manner, is that of the yielding of the whole being in self-surrender, and borne up by the flame of intense consecration to God.” (Maclaren)

[Hebrews 9:14 ESV] how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.
