However Saul did not inquire of the Lord as often as David and God was not as pleased to answer Saul's inquiries as He was to David's inquiries. Saul's great sin was to depend on himself and not to depend on God.
1Sa 23:2
Therefore David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go and smite these Philistines? And the LORD said unto David, Go, and smite the Philistines, and save Keilah.
1Sa 23:4
Then David enquired of the LORD yet again. And the LORD answered him and said, Arise, go down to Keilah; for I will deliver the Philistines into thine hand.
2Sa 2:1
And it came to pass after this, that David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the LORD said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.
2Sa 5:19
And David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up to the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto David, Go up: for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into thine hand.

And when David enquired of the LORD, he said, Thou shalt not go up; [but] fetch a compass behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees.
1Ch 14:14
Therefore David enquired again of God; and God said unto him, Go not up after them; turn away from them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees.
1Sa 28:6How did David learn to inquire of the Lord? He knew that the Israelites gained the possession of the land not by their own sword or arm but God's right hand, God's arm, and the light of God's countenance, and the God's favor on them are the real reasons.

And let us bring again the ark of our God to us: for we enquired not at it in the days of Saul.
Psa 44:3A warrior as mighty as David was, he did not trust his own sword or arm; he depended on God's right hand and arm and sought after God's countenance and favor.
For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them.
Psa 44:6
For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me.
May I inquire of the Lord for His direction concerning my future. May I seek the light of His countenance and favor.
