Exodus 32:32 & Numbers 11:15

Exodus 32:32If thou wilt forgive their sin — if not — If the decree be gone forth, and there is no remedy but they must be ruined; blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written — Termed the book of the living, Psalm 69:28; and alluded to Isaiah 4:3, where the prophet speaks of being written among the living in Jerusalem. He evidently means, “Let me die rather than live to see the evils that are coming upon them, if thou shalt think fit to punish them as they deserve: if they must perish, let me perish with them.” God, it must be observed, is here represented after the manner of men, as having all the names of the living enrolled in a book, to signify his particular care and inspection of the sons of men, see Psalm 56:8. So, to blot out of the book of life, or of the living, is to cut one off from the land of the living, equivalent to Moses’s expression, (Numbers 11:15,) If thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand. And thus it is understood by the Hebrew doctors. Compare Deuteronomy 25:6Psalm 87:6; andEzekiel 13:9. In pursuance of the same allusion, God is represented as enrolling the citizens of the heavenly Jerusalem, or the members of his true church, in a book by themselves, Daniel 12:1Php 4:3; and Revelation 3:5. Moses’s words may be further illustrated by those of St. Paul, (Romans 9:3,) I could wish myself to be an anathema from Christ, or rather, as the words απο του χριστου may properly be rendered, after Christ, that is, after his example to be consigned to temporal death, and made a cursefor my brethren’s sake. In short, Moses here expresses his vehement zeal for God’s glory, and love to his people, signifying that the very thought of their destruction, and the dishonour that would thereby come upon God, was so intolerable to him, that he rather wished, if it were possible, that God would accept of him as a sacrifice in their stead, and by his destruction prevent so great a mischief. Those who understand Moses’s words as if he wished to be excluded from eternal life for the sake of his brethren, make him talk a language quite unnatural, and inconsistent with that desire of self-happiness which is the first law of nature. Besides, it should be remembered, that to be excluded from eternal life, implies not only the loss of heaven and final misery, but also final and desperate enmity against God; and that any man should think a willingness to be eternally wicked, and a desperate hater of God, can spring from love, and be a proper expression of zeal for his glory, is wonderful indeed!

God's Book in Exodus 32:32-33

Here are instances of "Book of Life" in the Bible:
[Phl 4:3 NKJV] 3 And I urge you also, true companion, help these women who labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names [are] in the Book of Life.
[Rev 3:5 NKJV] 5 "He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.
[Rev 13:8 NKJV] 8 All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
[Rev 20:12, 15 NKJV] 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is [the Book] of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. ... 15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.
[Rev 21:27 NKJV] 27 But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb's Book of Life.
[Rev 22:19 NKJV] 19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and [from] the things which are written in this book.
What about the book in Exodus 32:32-33, which read:
[Exo 32:32-33 NKJV] 32 "Yet now, if You will forgive their sin--but if not, I pray, blot me out of Your book which You have written." 33 And the LORD said to Moses, "Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book.
Is God's book in these verses the same Book of Life? God's book in these two verses may be related to the book of living in following verses:
[Eze 13:9 NKJV] 9 ... they shall not be in the assembly of My people, nor be written in the record of the house of Israel, nor shall they enter into the land of Israel. ...
[Num 11:15 NKJV] 15 "If You treat me like this, please kill me here and now--if I have found favor in Your sight--and do not let me see my wretchedness!"
[Isa 4:3 NKJV] 3 And it shall come to pass that [he who is] left in Zion and remains in Jerusalem will be called holy--everyone who is recorded among the living in Jerusalem.
What Moses is saying in Exodus 32:32 is "God, please forgive the sin of the Israelites. If not, please let me die now.

Following is from Matthew Henry's commentary:
II. He intercedes with God for mercy. Observe,
1. How pathetic his address was. Moses returned unto the Lord, not to receive further instructions about the tabernacle: there were no more conferences now about that matter. Thus men's sins and follies make work for their friends and ministers, unpleasant work, many times, and give great interruptions to that work which they delight in. Moses in this address expresses, (1.) His great detestation of the people's sin, v. 31. He speaks as one overwhelmed with the horror of it: Oh! this people have sinned a great sin. God had first told him of it (v. 7), and now he tells God of it, by way of lamentation. He does not call them God's people, he knew they were unworthy to be called so; but this people, this treacherous ungrateful people, they have made for themselves gods of gold. It is a great sin indeed to make gold our god, as those do that make it their hope, and set their heart on it. He does not go about to excuse or extenuate the sin; but what he had said to them by way of conviction he says to God by way of confession: They have sinned a great sin;he came not to make apologies, but to make atonement. "Lord, pardon the sin, for it is great,' Ps. 25:11. (2.) His great desire of the people's welfare (v. 32): Yet now it is not too great a sin for infinite mercy to pardon, and therefore if thou wilt forgive their sin. What then Moses? It is an abrupt expression, "If thou wilt, I desire no more; if thou wilt, thou wilt be praised, I shall be pleased, and abundantly recompensed for my intercession.' It is an expression like that of the dresser of the vineyard (Lu. 13:9), If it bear fruit; or, If thou wilt forgive, is as much as, "O that thou wouldest forgive!' as Lu. 19:42If thou hadst known is,O that thou hadst known. "But if not, if the decree has gone forth, and there is no remedy, but they must be ruined; if this punishment which has already been inflicted on many is not sufficient (2 Co. 2:6), but they must all be cut off, blot me, I pray thee, out of the book which thou hast written;' that is, "If they must be cut off, let me be cut off with them, and cut short of Canaan; if all Israel must perish, I am content to perish with them; let not the land of promise be mine by survivorship.' This expression may be illustrated fromEze. 13:9, where this is threatened against the false prophets, They shall not be written in the writing of the house of Israel, neither shall they enter into the land of Israel. God had told Moses that, if he would not interpose he would make of him a great nation, v. 10. "No,' says Moses, "I am so far from desiring to see my name and family built up on the ruins of Israel, that I will choose rather to sink with them. If I cannot prevent their destruction, let me not see it (Num. 11:15); let me not be written among the living(Isa. 4:3), nor among those that are marked for preservation; even let me die in the last ditch.' Thus he expresses his tender affection for the people, and is a type of the good Shepherd, that lays down his life for the sheep (Jn. 10:11), who was to be cut off from the land of the living for the transgression of my people, Isa. 53:8Dan. 9:26. He is also an example of public-spiritedness to all, especially to those in public stations. All private interests must be made subordinate to the good and welfare of communities. It is no great matter what becomes of us and our families in this world, so that it go well with the church of God, and there be peace upon Israel. Moses thus importunes for a pardon, and wrestles with God, not prescribing to him ("If thou wilt not forgive, thou art either unjust or unkind'); no, he is far from that; but, "If not, let me die with the Israelites, and the will of the Lord be done.'
2. Observe how prevalent his address was. God would not take him at his word; no, he will not blot any out of his book but those that by their wilful disobedience have forfeited the honour of being enrolled in it (v. 33); the soul that sins shall die, and not the innocent for the guilty. This was also an intimation of mercy to the people, that they should not all be destroyed in a body, but those only that had a hand in the sin. Thus Moses gets ground by degrees. God would not at first give him full assurances of his being reconciled to them, lest, if the comfort of a pardon were too easily obtained, they should be emboldened to do the like again, and should not be made sensible enough of the evil of the sin. Comforts are suspended that convictions may be the deeper impressed: also God would hereby exercise the faith and zeal of Moses, their great intercessor. Further, in answer to the address of Moses, (1.) God promises, notwithstanding this, to go on with his kind intention of giving them the land of Canaan, the land he had spoken to them of, v. 34. Therefore he sends Moses back to them to lead them, though they were unworthy of him, and promises that his angel should go before them, some created angel that was employed in the common services of the kingdom of providence, which intimated that they were not to expect any thing for the future to be done for them out of the common road of providence, not any thing extraordinary. Moses afterwards obtained a promise of God's special presence with them (ch. 33:14, 17); but at present this was all he could prevail for. (2.) Yet he threatens to remember this sin against them when hereafter he should see cause to punish them for other sins: "When I visit, I will visit for this among the rest. Next time I take the rod in hand, they shall have one stripe the more for this.'

Does a man before being saved possess spirit?

Does a man before being saved possess spirit? As I read messages by Spurgeon, this question came to my mind. I have been searching for an answer for few weeks and I think I found an answer now.

Genesis 1:26 reads:
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Genesis 2:7 reads:
And the LORD God formed man [of] the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
In Genesis 1:26, God made man in "our image, after our likeness". The teaching from the church has been that man is made in God's image refers to the fact that man has spirit as God is spirit and that the spirit of man died when he sinned as God had said in Genesis 2:17,
But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
and man died spiritually after he sinned as seen in Genesis 3. I also used to think that the breath of life was God's spirit and that that is how man came to possess spirit.

However, breath, Strong's Number H7307 or the Hebrew רוּחַ (ruwach ), is used in Genesis 7:15 as well to indicate the breath of life in animals. Genesis 7:15 reads:
And they went in unto Noah into the ark, two and two of all flesh, wherein [is] the breath of life.
So the breath of life cannot be spirit since animals do not possess spirit.

Then, what does it mean that man became a living soul? Rather than saying a living soul here means a living spirit, we just have to accept that man was first formed with the dust of the ground and now possessed a soul. So an unregenerate man possess a flesh and a soul but not a spirit.

1 Corinthians 15:44-45 read:
It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam [was made] a quickening spirit.
Here "natural", Strong's Number G5591, matches the Greek ψυχικός (psychikos), and "soul", Strong's Number G5590, matches the Greek ψυχή (psychē). So these two words have the same root and "natural" means "soulish".

Spurgeon writes in The Soul Winner:
We are first in the natural or soulish stage of being, like the first Adam, and then in regeneration we enter into a new condition, and we become possessors of the life-giving "spirit."
Does a man before being saved possess spirit? The answer seems no or at least the unsaved man is soulish and not spiritual.

I will not go away from thee

Deuteronomy 15:16-17 read:
And it shall be, if he say unto thee, I will not go away from thee; because he loveth thee and thine house, because he is well with thee; Then thou shalt take an aul, and thrust [it] through his ear unto the door, and he shall be thy servant for ever. And also unto thy maidservant thou shalt do likewise.
I love the hymn "I love, I love my Master", which is based on these verses. The lyric goes:

1
I love, I love my Master,
I will not go out free,
For He is my Redeemer;
He paid the price for me.
I would not leave His service,
  It is so sweet and blest;
And in the weariest moments
  He gives the truest rest.
2
My Master shed His life-blood
  My vassal life to win,
And save me from the bondage
  Of tyrant self and sin.
He chose me for His service,
And gave me power to choose
That blessed, perfect freedom,
  Which I shall never lose.
3
I would not halve my service,
  His only it must be!
His only, who so loved me,
  And gave Himself for me.
Rejoicing and adoring,
  Henceforth my song shall be,
I love, I love my Master,
I will not go out free.
This hymn makes me cry. There have been many moments I tried to leave the Lord but the Lord has always been with me and kept me by His side.

I love, I love my Master, I will not go out free.

When Moses was gone into the tabernacle of the congregation to speak with God ...

Numbers 7:89 read:
And when Moses was gone into the tabernacle of the congregation to speak with him, then he heard the voice of one speaking unto him from off the mercy seat that [was] upon the ark of testimony, from between the two cherubims: and he spake unto him.
When Moses wanted to speak with God, he went into the tabernacle of the congregation. He then heard the voice of God from the mercy seat, which was upon the ark of testimony and between the two cherubims.

When I want to speak with God, what do I do? How do I hear the voice of God?

On this wise ye shall bless ...

Numbers 6:23-27 read:
Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them, The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace. And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them.
God really wanted to bless His children. So He gave detailed instructions to them on how to be holy and be wise. C. H. Spurgeon writes about wisdom in The Fourfold Treasure
O happy are they who live at the gates of Heaven while yet on earth; who sit at the feet of the Blessed in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus while they are toiling along through the pilgrimage of this life! This is to be wise, to have Christ’s Teaching, Christ’s Example and above all, Christ’s Presence! So may the poorest find the Lord Jesus made of God unto them Wisdom.
May I sit at the feet of the Lord and have His Teaching, Example and Presence today.

a sweet savour unto the LORD

The phrase "a sweet savour unto the LORD" is repeated three times in Leviticus chapter 1. Leviticus 1:9 reads:
But his inwards and his legs shall he wash in water: and the priest shall burn all on the altar, [to be] a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.
Leviticus 1:13 reads:
But he shall wash the inwards and the legs with water: and the priest shall bring [it] all, and burn [it] upon the altar: it [is] a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.
Leviticus 1:17 reads:
And he shall cleave it with the wings thereof, [but] shall not divide [it] asunder: and the priest shall burn it upon the altar, upon the wood that [is] upon the fire: it [is] a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.
A savor is "a characteristic taste, flavor, or smell, especially a pleasant one." A burnt sacrifice is an offering of a sweet savor unto the Lord.

2 Corinthians 2:14-16 read:
Now thanks [be] unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place. For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish: To the one [we are] the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. ...
2 Corinthians says, "we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ" to those who are saved or who are not saved.  May I abide in Christ each moment today so that I may offer an offering of a sweet savor unto the Lord.

every one whose heart stirred him up, and every one whom his spirit made willing

Exodus 35:21 reads:
And they came, every one whose heart stirred him up, and every one whom his spirit made willing, [and] they brought the LORD'S offering to the work of the tabernacle of the congregation, and for all his service, and for the holy garments.
Exodus 35:30-31 read:
... See, the LORD hath called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah; And he hath filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship;
Lord, please help me come and offer myself for your work. Please stir my heart and make my spirit willing to offer myself for your service. Fill your servants in the church with the spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship. Amen.

The LORD proclaimed the name of the LORD

Exodus 34:5-7 read:
And the LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD. And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear [the guilty]; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth [generation].
The LORD proclaimed His name to Moses. This is how the Lord wants to be known to His people. The ordering of His attributes may contain some significance. This is how I should experience the Lord as well.

The LORD.
The LORD God.
He is merciful and gracious.
He is long-suffering.
He is abundant in goodness and truth.
He keeps mercy for thousands.
He forgives iniquity, transgression and sin.
He is however just and holy God, who deals with sin completely, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children.

I have called by name .. .And I have filled him with the spirit of God ...

Exodus 31:2-5 read:
See, I have called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah: And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, To devise cunning works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass, And in cutting of stones, to set [them], and in carving of timber, to work in all manner of workmanship.
When God commissioned Bezaleel to do His work, God called Bezaleel by name and filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship.

It is the same today: when God calls His servant, he first establishes a personal relationship by calling His servant by name and prepares him for the task by filling him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship. I need to wait for God's calling and His hands in preparing me for the task.

Precept upon Precept

But the word of the Lord was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

Behold, God is my salvation;

Isa 12:1-6 KJV read:
And in that day thou shalt say, O LORD, I will praise thee: though thou wast angry with me, thine anger is turned away, and thou comfortedst me.
Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.
Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.
And in that day shall ye say, Praise the LORD, call upon his name, declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is exalted.
Sing unto the LORD; for he hath done excellent things: this is known in all the earth.
Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion: for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee.
Amen.

Child in Isaiah 7:16

Isa 7:16 KJV
For before the child shall know to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land that thou abhorrest shall be forsaken of both her kings.

Who is the child here? Is this Immanuel on Isa 7:14 or Shearjashub, Isaiah's son on Isa 7:3?
I would rather agree with Matthew Henry's interpretation that it is Shearjashub.
Here is another sign in particular of the speedy destruction of these potent princes that were now a terror to Judah, v. 16. "Before this child (so it should be read), this child which I have now in my arms’’ (he means not Immanuel, but Shear-jashub his own son, whom he was ordered to take with him for a sign, v. 3), "before this child shall know how to refuse the evil and choose the good’’ (and those who saw what his present stature and forwardness were would easily conjecture how long that would be), "before this child be three or four years older, the land that thou abhorrest, these confederate forces of Israelites and Syrians, which thou hast such an enmity to and standest in such dread of, shall be forsaken of both their kings, both Pekah and Rezin,’’ who were in so close an alliance that they seemed as if they were the kings of but one kingdom. This was fully accomplished; for within two or three years after this, Hoshea conspired against Pekah, and slew him (2 Ki. 15:30), and, before that, the king of Assyria took Damascus, and slew Rezin, 2 Ki. 16:9. Nay, there was a present event, which happened immediately, and when this child carried the prediction of in his name, which was a pledge and earnest of this future event. Shear-jashub signifies The remnant shall return, which doubtless points at the wonderful return of those 200,000 captives whom Pekah and Rezin had carried away, who were brought back, not by might or power, but by the Spirit of the Lord of hosts. Read the story,2 Chr. 28:8–15. The prophetical naming of this child having thus had its accomplishment, no doubt this, which was further added concerning him, should have its accomplishment likewise, that Syria and Israel should be deprived of both their kings. One mercy from God encourages us to hope for another, if it engages us to prepare for another.

Psa 17:14-15 Resurrection

Psa 17:14-15 KJV
From men which are thy hand, O LORD, from men of the world, which have their portion in this life, and whose belly thou fillest with thy hid treasure: they are full of children, and leave the rest of their substance to their babes. As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.

Men of the world strive to fill their bellies and to leave their wealth to their children. However David hoped to behold the Lord's face in righteousness when he was resurrected being transformed in the Lord's likeness.

What do I hope for?

Lord, As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.

Psalms 52 - I trust in the mercy of God

Psa 52:7-8 KJV - Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness. But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever.

What do I trust? David trusted in the mercy of God. The mighty man trusted in the abundance of his riches.

Lord, Let me make you my strength. Let me trust in your mercy for ever and ever.

2Sm 6:20

2Sm 6:20 Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, How glorious was the king of Israel to day, who uncovered himself to day in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovereth himself!

David danced before the Lord but Michal saw him dance uncovering himself before the handmaids.

When I see someone, do I see the Lord working in him?

2Sm 6:14 before the Lord

2Sm 6:14 And David danced before the LORD with all)) his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod.

What can't I do before the Lord except sinning? Like a child to please his parents, I can sing and dance. David however did it with all his might. Let me glorify the Lord with all my might.
